I love how passengers that probably have little to no captain experience or an significant time on a ship can say that the Captain did the wrong thing... give me a break.
Ugh... My captain sailed through seas that came over the bow!! LOL! We could see what looked like the bow was under crispy blue water! LOL! We just kept going! Uhh yeah, lots of sailors got sick! I've crossed the Atlantic Ocean SIX times and our missions couldn't give a damn about bad weather!
Here's the thing: on cruise ships today, the captain, officers and even the shipping line generally try to avoid even remotely rough seas by any means necessary. Whether that entails going around it, staying in port and waiting it out, or canceling ports of call altogether. These vessels, unlike the great liners of yesteryear, are not built for harsh weather at all. That means when they encounter it, the ride is going to be anything but steady. And I laugh all the time when I hear it happens.
Will King I went on a cruise in 1978 when I was only 17yrs old, and the swells were so high that it was terrifying. The ship was listing terribly, and I watched the curtains as they were becoming more horizontal than vertical… But that’s a normal part of being on the ocean, so not for one minute did I think this was the captains fault… I just assumed this was part and parcel of cruising the ocean, no matter what vehicle you use… They can blame nature and the unpredictability of storms and high seas, but not a Captain for goodness sake 🤷♀️
Love how people are like that storm won't ever move towards us. It will open up heavens gate and let us through safely. You're on the ocean, you accept the risks of being on the ocean.
Thank you for saying this! It’s a ship in the ocean and these things does happen. If the captain ran out of route and people missed their flights then it’s a whole new issue. You made it back to land safely. Sounds like the captain did his job!
There must have been a shortage of news stories on that day. It's Hurriciane season AND you're on a ship. 15+ cruises later & I absolutely LOVE cruising. We sailed after Matthew and there were some "rough" moments but still thoroughly enjoyed our vacation!
What? Did you even watch this? Some rough waters?? You can’t be a real person if you believe this… I would assume you are the cruise line trying to down play this!
Pretty funny to think how he expect a vessel to outrun a storm like it's a plane. Not forgetting it's a passage back to her home port, perhaps hes looking for an extended cruise voyage citing the storm as a reason.
I also was on a ship at that time, our captain stated that the ship will take it, but the passengers are the ones that are stressed. From what our captain stated, the storm was too large for the Carnival to avoid it.
Poor muffins. A whole day of that. What a horror show indeed! I've endured that and worse for over a week at times. It's the sea and you're on a ship and it's only a floating resort in the brochures. You don't want to get knocked around? Stay the hell off the sea!

You ll be fine, the big ship of cruises can withstand up to 300 miles per hour wind on the open sea. I have been in worse violent storm in the middle of the sea with lots smaller ship in indonesia. Same goes with airplane with the severe turbulence
I went on a cruise 30 yrs ago and had a blast, I just returned from Carnival magic and found out its all about money nowadays. Most time is spent in lines--Getting on the bus to ship, check in, waiting to board, food lines were nuts, getting off at piers, getting back on, packed elevators, food was ready at buffets only to have closed signs all about and a long line where the only open buffet. They heard you like cattle. But really how do you move and feed 4000 people.
Anyone who goes to sea, be it on a cruise ship or some other commercial vessel, cannot be so ignorant to expect fair conditions 100% of the time. The captain and senior officers, particularly on cruise ships, do everything they can to avoid storms. They are constantly updated on weather and sea conditions and have access to the latest weather forecast technology. Despite all that, huge storms can develop very quickly out at sea. Ships are very slow in comparison, usually less than 20kts at best speed. You can't outrun a storm that's 100 miles wide, sometimes many hundreds. Just batten down the hatches and head straight through it.
For those who are being critical of the passengers and defending the captain, I think that the passengers were afraid and rightfully so they are within their rights even if they took a chance to cruise. Just because there is a risk to cruising , flying or driving does not mean that precaution/safety measures should not be taken to minimize those risks. One of the complaints that a lot of passengers who were on this voyage have was that there was “no communication” from the captain or safety team for 14 hours. Even some crew members spoke out on how bad this was. It is a tough thing to be in a storm so horrific and had no communication. Maybe the captain did what he humanly could to keep them safe or maybe not. Not communicating to the passengers only make it more terrifying. Empathy on both sides is needed in this situation. You might view things differently if you were on board. Hopefully the Carnival will do an investigation to evaluate what happened and give an update. In most cases when there is a storm or hurricane approaching, the captain will reroute or stay put until it is gone or less impactful. I believe that this is a protocol for all cruise lines. I am curious to know how this was communicated and how it was perceived by the captain and the safety team before they approached the storm. Just glad that no lives were lost.
I was in super rough waves on Royal carribean. The windows in the dining room on level 6 were wet. No problem. I would never sail carnival. Most problems people post are on Carnival ships.
Looks like fun. I would love to be on that cruise ship. Don't be a bunch of babies, just enjoy your Poseidon sea adventure. Bunch of complainers. Grandpa said those waves are nothing compared to Ocean storms he was in. You went on a Ship called Carnival and you had your ride now be satisfied.
I specifically cruise hoping for a storm. It’s so exiting! The thrill is in the danger. The discomfort and seasickness is just a bonus. Cant wait to ram an iceberg next.
A cruise is a cruise! You're on a mini Titanic, that too, can run into unexpected dangers. The beauty of sailboats on the ocean is one thing, but!!,.. You couldn't pay me to take a cruise!
There is no money in the world that would be enough to pay me to take a cruise. Just the thought of having to deal with obnoxious people for your entire trip and being strapped on a ship with no control ....never. I would rather pay tip dollar and fly to my destinations
Cruise companies have a reputation of placing profits over people. The smart thing to do would’ve been to wait out the storm in calmer waters and give everybody some extra time aboard. Their risk assessment process may need to be reviewed.
The storm was too big. The ship can handle these storms. These passengers haven't got a dang clue as to what that ship can take. The passengers are only looking for a quick payday and carnival ain't gonna pay em
The cruise I can imagine was a nightmare, when you experience this.I feel the Captain should have announced what he was going to do and explain it would be rough but the ship 🚢 would be ok Maybe that would have helped some.
No one realizing the picture one it’s not safe to have a big ship docked and the big question knowing hotels are taking in locals that mite need a place to stay where rest of guest that ship brings in going go? SMH I mean a boat like that 101 don’t dock or the wave can smash the boat in to the docks.. knowing honest I rather be in a boat rather on land or worst be on land no where to go and be stuck out side in the storm…
I understand they were scared but I dont think I would be complaining about the Captains full attention being on getting the ship through the storm versus trying to make me feel better 🙄
I love how passengers that probably have little to no captain experience or an significant time on a ship can say that the Captain did the wrong thing... give me a break.

A lot of passengers leave their common sense ashore when they go on cruises. I say the captain and crew did their jobs by keeping everyone safe.

All this says to me is these passengers are looking for a quick payday and it's not gonna happen.
I sailed in 28 fit seas for two days. No biggie
I was in super rough waves on Royal carribean. The windows in the dining room on level 6 were wet. No problem. I would never sail carnival. Most problems people post are on Carnival ships.
Were you on Harmony this past week?
So True about Carnival Ships 😂😂😂
@@LauraJdogmom a coworker of mine just go back from a cruise on the Harmony to Virgin Islands & Bahamas
OMG you are too funny😢😅 cruised on both RC and CCL had rough seas on both..
Want a solution for this matter??? Don’t go on a cruise plain and simple!!
If pax think they can do a better job of navigating, then go for it!
Get over it it's a cruise ship..I was on the carnival Glory when we had ,25 foot waves no big deal.😢 OMG same thing happens on planes all the time.
Well said!!
I was on this ship back in the day when it was carnival destiny
Its the Ocean ???
How do you rescue all these people during a storms.
That is why I keep my feet firmly on the ground.
Strong winds and huge waves that lasted for hours? Try surviving a typhoon in the South China Sea on a 500 foot destroyer......for days. #Saltlife
What happened to weather radar????
Where do they . PASSENGERS think they are. Your on the ocean. Gee
If you think the captain could have "outran" the storm on that size vessel, you might not need to cruise.
Someone tell him the sea is unpredictable!!
Give them a damn REFUND
There is no money in the world that would be enough to pay me to take a cruise. Just the thought of having to deal with obnoxious people for your entire trip and being strapped on a ship with no control ....never. I would rather pay tip dollar and fly to my destinations
Agreed . 💯 percent!!
Sunshine like the oldest and SMALLEST ship they have. (1996) Not that that's relevant but.... and its capacity is nowhere near 5000. Lol
Honestly who cares what these passengers think. I can guarantee you the captain knows better than these "Karens" looking for a cheap payday.
As the great comedian Billy Connolly once said about cruises - "Prison with the option of drowning"
You board.. you risk.
I am glad that everyone is safe but I ain't go lie, I was thinking about the Titanic tho
It’s funny the passengers are saying what the captain should of done lol. Sounds like everyone made it home. I think the captain did his job
That's what you get. Can't anyone think anymore?
