Hey Anders, cheers for making all these superb videos. I wonder how come you don't have Sex on the Beach recipe yet? :-) keep doing the great work!
My dad from the 70s restaurant days, said there was a half orange with holes poked holes and the orange was the sun. I don't know how else to explain it. Can't ask him, hes gone now
Always wanted a home bar, but was never motivated to to make one until Anders & Az showed up on my feed. Cheers guys! Great cocktail selection so far. The modified sunrise is best IMO, that dash of AB is beautiful 🌅
I’m so glad to have a huge counter and pantry in my kitchen so the home bar can become a big party. Next is getting a house with a basement and all it is is a big bar and lounge!
1970s Tequila Sunrise: You really do have to drink the whole thing to see why it's loved. The first sip (with a straw) is too sweet, lulling the tongue into putting down its defenses, until the final sips, now rich in tequila, go down more smoothly. Alternatively, without a straw, you get something simple and hard-hitting, gradually mitigated with grenadine. It's the change in character from start to end that defines this cocktail.
NO Kidding. No one drinks a Tequila Sunrise with a straw!! Any real bartender should know that a layered drink, like a Tequila Sunrise or a Pousse-Cafe, must be sipped, from the top down! The heavily sugared liquor settles to the bottom, so drinking with a straw is ignorant and idiotic. I lived in the Bay Area starting in 77, and frequented the Trident. Made properly, and sipped in the sun as the ice melts, the Tequila Sunrise is a decent drink, dominated by the tequila. It has a place. In fact, skip the grenadine, and use straight up concentrated pomegranate juice, and it is really good. Just adjust the pomegranate juice to taste, and use fresh squeezed OJ. I have been a fan of this channel, but this is the first time you really missed a drink. Remember the early 70s was still rock and roll, and the daiquiri craze in The City didn't start until the late 70s... remember the fern bars, and Henry Africa one block off Lombard and Van Ness. The owner ran three fern bars on the same city block.
70’s Tequila Sunrise - I was very surprised to see you taste a Sunrise with a straw on the bottom. You would only get straight Grenadine. A Tequila Sunrise is sipped over the rim, toss the straw. And as observed above the drink gradually changes as you drink it. The first sip and the final are VERY different things. Love your videos, but tryi it correctly before you declare it a loser. And I am going to have to shop for the 30’s ingredients and try the original, thanks for the intro to something new.
I think no matter whether you like it or not, the 70s version is the definitive owner of the name. Call the original the Tequila Li-lo. Aside from the sipping instructions above, in the 70s this would have been made with "bar orange juice" not sweet freshly squeezed oj. I could explain bar orange juice long-form, but siffice to say it would be alin to using white grapefruit juice vs ruby red.
on the modern tequila sunrise you even can amplify the 'sunrise' effect: fill the glass with orange juice, put in the grenadine (home made of course), let it sink to the bottom and then float the tequila on top, so you have a colour change from red to dark orange to light orange to very light yellow on top. But you absolutely have to stir it before drinking, it's for presentation only.
You know, I've always been curious about how to "properly" make cocktails, but no one else does it like you. I love that you explain more than just 'this is the recipe' like most and never fail to make me laugh. Thank you!
I agree, Orange Juice is easily my least favorite juice for cocktails. It's really hard to balance without some sort of chemical modifier. Great comparison Anders!
Az making the TS 2.0 is worth the watch. Anders makes it look so easy. I have an appreciation of how y’all mix drink after drink with speed while maintaining quality.
The original tequila sunrise is a great template to mix with. I agree with the adjustments you made, even without tasting it myself I think it's just way more balanced. I often make a fizzy drink on a similar template: 2 parts gin, 1 part creme de cassis, 1 part lemon, shake and top with good quality tonic water. Great for the summer. :) Amazing video and I love when you guys do tasting together! 🔥
If Orange juice is to sweet I just add 10 ml of lime. In my country(Poland) oranges are from abroad so often more sour than sweet. In that case with just splash of hm grenadine this drink is all right. But still one or two is enough :) cheers , I love your style Anders! 😎
I'm preparing my cocktail menu for tomorrow's Superbowl LVIII party, SF v. KC repeat of LIV. I select drinks to represent each teams colors. I was reviewing the Tequila Sunrise and the Mexican Firing Squad when I came across your video comparing your El Diablo recipe to the original. Your and Az' improved original Biltmore AZ Tequila Sunrise is almost El Diablo (club soda instead of ginger beer). I plan to try it another time, since I have been drinking cocktails in preparation for tomorrow. Btw, your home made grenadine is much tastier than store bought, but I'm using the latter for the color effect. I always enjoy your videos. They are very clear, with the right amount of backstory, and not too long like some other shows.
Dude, I’ve been hooked on your UA-cam content like a Netflix series! Great stuff! I have a few bottles home that I got during summer last year and I would like to see if you have cocktail suggestions for them.
Never been a big fan of the tequila sunrise. I have used a splash of orange juice in my pomegranate cocktails that pairs nicely with the angostura bitters when I’m out of orange oil but yeah.. you nailed it regarding orange juice cocktails. Great job again you two and Az! You’re hired! 🤘
Not an “insta” guy, but I wanted to toast your “improved” 30’s version. Made it last weekend when our best friends were in town. It was a hit. Haven’t made my own grenadine yet, but did get some good stuff (Libor & Co.). What a world of difference…. Cheers!
Hey, so yesterday I watch "Negroni" episod, and today I watch like 30 episodes of you. Great material, I hope you will proceed with another ideas and drinks :) sending Vodka from Poland, cheers!
Just mixed the modified Sunrise and boy this is extremely nice one. Never liked the 70s one due to the orange juice and since I'm a sucker for black currants, I fell immediately in love. Thanks the receipt - happy holidays to you both :)
Yay to the original and the 2.0 version of this lovely cocktail!! I love the fresh lime juice and Angostura Bitters addition to the 2.0 version!! Great idea!! OJ is definitely my least favorite flavour/modifier to add to a cocktail. Overpowering. It ruins any cocktail IMO. I love the Creme de Cassis that you are using, Anders - Cassis de Dijon. Beautiful texture and flavour! I had no idea this original version of the Tequila Sunrise even existed. It's wonderful to learn!! And of course, it goes without saying, I love making my own Grenadine! Love the Tequilas that you chose!! Fabulous as usual!! Great video Anders!! :-) Have a fabulous weekend!! :-)
Thanks, Christine! I hope you're having a wonderful weekend. The tequila sunrise isn't in my usual rotation, but this comparison was a lot of fun! And it's always fun to tweak a drink to your liking. I hope you're able to try the updated original version! Cheers to you!
@@AndersErickson This was such a fun video! I enjoyed it! I will definitely try the updated original version!! Tonight I had a Green Chartreuse Swizzle! It's the first time I have had this cocktail and I really found it lovely and so complex! I know you also enjoy Chartreuse!! Cheers Anders!!
I always considered the Tequila Sunrise a layered drink, first ice, then pour the heavier specific gravity beverages in, Creme de cassis, grenadine, orange juice, then tequila. It's beautiful because it looks like a sunrise. The drink mixes as you drink it, especially if you stir it occasionally with your straw. I garnish with an orange slice, maybe with a cherry on the bottom for effect.
I love your channel! Have you ever considered holding a contest where you’re viewers send in new recipes for you to make? I think that may be a fun addition to your channel 😊
All one needs to find out the answer to this problem is two glasses, a humid day, and the time to have a nice afternoon nap. This was a fun video. Especially the Rolling Stones graphic. Edit: I think this was the first drink Az was visibly regretting trying
Thanks Anders! Gonna try your twist on the original one ASAP. I made me and my wife a Lucien Gaudin this evening ... Again. It's like a Negroni and a Dry Martini with a sweet orange twist all mixed up in one. I like it a lot. Take care and have a brilliant Friday!
Didn't have any Creme d' Cassis, but google says raspberry syrup is a substitute. I muddled some raspberries with 3/4oz rich simple syrup. Love how the updated cocktail came together.
Dude, 7 leguas reposado is my dad's favorite tequila, but it's been very hard to get over the last few years. Seeing you use it made me hop online to search it and wouldn't you know it, found it easily on amazon. With time to spare for fathers day! Great content btw, keep up the good work!
I have just tried your T.Q 2.0.... A very enjoyable experience!!! It has a adult taste, the Angustura bitter and tequila goes together very well🍸😀 I used a tequila reserva 1800 anejo, when I did my drink.
I remember Tequila Sunrise from the 1970s and 80s (my high school and college years, roughly). I haven’t heard of the drink for decades. Now I want one, though. But the Sunrise of the 70s was a layered drink, as I remember it. You pour in grenadine syrup, orange juice, and tequila, in that order. You serve it without stirring or shaking any of the ingredients. That’s how you get the “sunrise” effect. (The drinker can stir it or not before downing it, but the layered colors are important to the presentation.) I’d like to try the creme de cassis version, too. The drink I remember having with cassis is kir (if I’m remembering the name right). You put some creme de cassis in the bottom of a wine glass, and then fill it up with white wine. This, too, was a layered drink. It was originally French. Or at least, I was introduced to it by French people.
aw you were so cute and merry you guys! I am a child of the seventies and tequila sunrise [and screwdriver] are the two things we had when we wanted to get drunk without our parents knowing: we drowned the flavour of crap spirits in orange juice. Some things should stay in the past. There are so many gorgeous cocktails you have shown on this channel #saynototequilasunrise
When you were making the original version, I kept thinking, it could do with a dash of Bitters. I dunno if you have, but when we're allowed to travel again, you should take a trip to Trinidad, my home country, and take a tour of the Angostura factory, it actually is pretty cool. They have a butterfly museum in there lol and a sampling room where you can try a few of Angostura's rums, there's only one Angostura rum that I've never tried, and it's only because it's literally the most expensive rum on the planet, Legacy by Angostura, still on my bucket list.
It is definitely the way to go for any grenadine cocktail, but the issue with TSunrise really isn't using store grenadine. The drink is just one of the most disappointing things one can mix in my experience.
@@trzynasty909 The Tequila Sunrise disappointed me all my life. Then I made one with fresh orange juice, Sangre de Vida Blanco Tequila (expensive, but it was a gift of my brother) and my homemade grenadine. And it was amazing.
Great content, my good man! Your home bar setup is #goals. Also let us not forget, the Cypress Hill song Tequila Sunrise from the 1998 album: Cypress Hill IV. Bringing the fantastic beverage to a whole new genre of agave fans.
Great comparison, You could the 70's version is for that crowd that will drink anything. It looks great but is lacking. Maybe not drinking one would be the best thing ?? But I do love what you did to the original. It looks really good.
I wonder if the 70's tequila sunrise used boxed orange juice rather than fresh? I know nothing about the bar the rolling stones were in, but in my mind I think of gritty bars across the US who only had access to minute maid boxed orange juice. That particular brand is much more bitter than fresh orange juice and would probably make a more balance drink.
I like to make my Tequila Sunrises - 2 oz Reposado Tequila (Blanco works just fine but I just prefer Reposado) 3 oz Orange Juice 1 oz Lemon Juice Home Made Grenadine For me its a completely different drink but it looks like a typical Tequila Sunrise but the lemon juice fights off the sweetness of the Grenadine and OJ. Its really close to Margarita territory.
I like to cut OJ with Regan's Orange bitters, and club. Now I gotta try angostura. It's a LOT of sweetness to compensate for, so true. I love it though! When the oranges are ripe and sweet you don't have to use much.
My favourite new Mezcal cocktail at the moment is a 'Guava Mezcal Mule.', 60mm Mezcal, 60mm Guava juice, 30mm Lime juice, dash Agave syrup, pinch of salt.. shaken then double strained over ice, then top with 60mm ginger beer..Yum!
For a better looking sunrise effect use cold grenadine. Tequila, Oj, and pour the grenadine in a slow circle around the glass rim. It will slowly drop down. Voila sunrise effect!!! It really doesn't change the taste at all. Just nice visual.
At the bar I used to work at we made a cocktail very similar to the original Tequila Sunrise in this video called the El Diablo. The Main difference between the two was the use of ginger beer instead of club soda. The spicy kick of the ginger really added a lot.
I had to head to Instagram to find the adjusted version, and I’m your 6k follower :). Thanks for the great videos, I’m learning a lot. However, I find most of the Amazon links are no longer available (maybe just not in Canada), so maybe have a revisit.
Wow, I always though I liked Tequila Sunrise, until I tested both versions, and I totally agree now with your opinion, the original modified one is the best.
Tequila Sunrise is one of my favorites…the 70s version but I like sweet. The OJ also makes a difference in taste but I am interested in the og and your body 2.0 og . Great video!
i made a sake sunrise the other day based on the 1970s one, and i think its quite good. but instead of the orange juice i used mango juice cause i only had that.
I tried the 1970s version, but I shaked the OJ and Tequila in ice, then strained into a highball glass that I filled with only a quarter ounce of grenadine then ice. a slight stir with the stir spoon gives a nice look. That seems to balance it well.
We used to drink Tequila Sunrise at our Cardnights at my parents house when we where younger. I made it in a huge Pitcher. It was half a bottle of cheap Tequila Sierra, one liter if Orange juice, half liter of Maracuja juice, half litter pineapple juice and 1/4 liter of Monin Grenadine. Good times.
Hi Anders, the other day I dranked a cocktail named The Icon, which had white tequila 7 Leguas, St Germain, grapefruite juice, lemon juice and white granadine, shaked it and served with ice cubes. It was fresh, little sweet, little bitter, I could not stopping drinking it! I really enjoyed. Wondering if you could helped me deciphering the right quantities, and or some other cocktail recipe with same feeling. Regards from México.
It was something I drank when I was much younger just because it was colourful. Wasn't a favourite. I do like the looks of the improved second one V 2.0. WAY TO GO AZ!!! Good seeing you mixing one! It just looks like a proper cocktail. WIll give that one a try. This should be my excuse to finally put a bottle of tequila in my bar. Been dying for a 'Rita Cheers

It’s probably better once the insulin kicks in… I do like the flavor of Tequila and OJ but the OJ should be cut about 50/50 with soda water
I too have a problem with the sweetness of the 70"s version, so i use grapefruit juice instead. Works great and super simple!

(The drinker can stir it or not before downing it, but the layered colors are important to the presentation.)
I’d like to try the creme de cassis version, too.
😂 love the hashtag! Thanks for the comment, Stan! I'm going to have to agree with you - some thing should stay in the past. Cheers!
When you were making the original version, I kept thinking, it could do with a dash of Bitters. I dunno if you have, but when we're allowed to travel again, you should take a trip to Trinidad, my home country, and take a tour of the Angostura factory, it actually is pretty cool. They have a butterfly museum in there lol and a sampling room where you can try a few of Angostura's rums, there's only one Angostura rum that I've never tried, and it's only because it's literally the most expensive rum on the planet, Legacy by Angostura, still on my bucket list.
recommendation for everybody: make your own grenadine syrup, this will change the way you look at this ingredient
Homemade makes all the difference - cheers!
@@AndersErickson Homemade = Love so you're absolutely right
It is definitely the way to go for any grenadine cocktail, but the issue with TSunrise really isn't using store grenadine.
@@marctestarossa $40 is pretty average for decent tequilla, you can buy 3 of those for the price of 1942 don Julio.
Great content, my good man! Your home bar setup is #goals. Also let us not forget, the Cypress Hill song Tequila Sunrise from the 1998 album: Cypress Hill IV. Bringing the fantastic beverage to a whole new genre of agave fans.
Okay wtf, just started drink tequila sunrises, and I find this, BLESS
"What does it need?" LOL I've been watching for a few days and knew immediately that the answer was Angostura.
Solid episode again guys! For me, Tequila Sunrise = Cypress Hill
Thanks my friend! Good call on Cypress Hill - totally missed an opportunity there. Would've completely changed the feel of the video 😂
Great comparison, You could the 70's version is for that crowd that will drink anything. It looks great but is lacking. Maybe not drinking one would be the best thing ?? But I do love what you did to the original. It looks really good.
"maybe not drinking one would be the best" 😂 You may be right, David! Appreciate the comment - hope you have a wonderful weekend! Cheers!
I love the 70’s version, but now I’ve gotta try the original.
That looked fun!
I like to make my Tequila Sunrises -
2 oz Reposado Tequila (Blanco works just fine but I just prefer Reposado)
3 oz Orange Juice
1 oz Lemon Juice
Home Made Grenadine
For me its a completely different drink but it looks like a typical Tequila Sunrise but the lemon juice fights off the sweetness of the Grenadine and OJ. Its really close to Margarita territory.
I don’t even like tequila, but I just love your videos
I like to cut OJ with Regan's Orange bitters, and club. Now I gotta try angostura. It's a LOT of sweetness to compensate for, so true. I love it though! When the oranges are ripe and sweet you don't have to use much.
I’ve now have spent a small fortune stocking my bar…..testing out many of these cocktails…. Oh well….life is good lol!!
Just subbed, greetings from Poland!
Thank you so much! Cheers to you 🥃 🇵🇱
My favourite new Mezcal cocktail at the moment is a 'Guava Mezcal Mule.', 60mm Mezcal, 60mm Guava juice, 30mm Lime juice, dash Agave syrup, pinch of salt.. shaken then double strained over ice, then top with 60mm ginger beer..Yum!
I like your channel. There are many UA-cam cocktail makers but you do it without being obnoxious & egotistical! Well done!
I like cutting my oj with pineapple juice for my sunrises- excited to try original!
i made a sake sunrise the other day based on the 1970s one, and i think its quite good. but instead of the orange juice i used mango juice cause i only had that.
That sounds wonderful 👍
We need more Az! (I’m an Az-man! I’m all about that Az!) The two of you on together had a good, fun vibe.
Top notch vids. Keep it up!
Thanks! Glad you enjoy the vids - cheers!
@@AndersErickson love them. I’m learning way more from videos than all the mainstream channels! 🤙🏼
The 70’s rocked!
This one place I went to made a tequila sunrise with Cranberry juice instead of Grenadine and it was so good 👌
Was never a fan of the 1970's TS due to the OJ factor but the original 1930'a TS I am going to try but your version
Good times.
Impressive to fix the original version on the fly like that.
Love that you used Siete Leguas, it’s on my list of additive free tequilas to try
Yeah, I found the '70s version to be prettier than it was tasty - needs some tweaking. Hope you have a great weekend! Cheers!
