Broke:indepence day
Woke:American new year
k ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I approve. It’ll be like our equivalent of the Chinese New Year. We should also have more than just one animal associated with our country, considering how many other well-known American (yes, I know not all of these animals are necessarily STRICTLY American) animals there are that we could maybe use to help make our displays of symbolic national pride potentially just a little bit less...mundane? Don’t get me wrong, the eagle is fine from an aesthetic perspective, but besides that, the stars & stripes, and fireworks (?) we don’t really have all that much to work off of, or at least aren’t actively attempting to broaden the scope of things that we use to symbolize American patriotism. A few suggestions I might propose for such symbols/animals that we could have for different, specific departments, holidays, or even political parties perhaps some of the following: the grizzly bear (California’s flag and also an enduring symbol still associated with the 19th century American frontier), the moose (my man Teddy Roosevelt’s favorite furry creature which he would even name the third party he later founded after), the bison (because of its big cultural connections to Native Americans and the states of Great Plains), the bighorn sheep (at least as someone living in the American Southwest, a pretty commonly depicted creature often used in connection to preservation efforts throughout the desert regions of the country, aka Nevada, SoCal, Arizona, and New Mexico mainly), and lastly, although this one may seem somewhat strange or of unspectacular to some, I think that the face of a standard compass could be a cool symbol to tie to our history of frontier exploration and rapid (admittedly, often also problematic) expansion across much of the content. Honorable mentions: the grey wolf (why not?), the turkey (actually almost became our national bird b/c of Benjamin Franklin, and still has significant ties to Colonial America), the white-tailed deer (prevalent throughout probably almost 2/3 of the contiguous United States, so much so that they slaughter more people then any other animal in America every year, so scratch that perhaps), pronghorn deer (doesn’t kill scores of people and is much more specific to the American “heartlands,” and lastly, you know we gotta have a big old gator for our Gulf Coast representation 😅 Anyway, this has been my TED Talk, I appreciate you all for coming! 👌🏻

In Northern Ireland, we sorta see things pre-1998 (the good friday agreement) and post-1998 which ended the conflict of the troubles of republicans v loyalists
I was literally about to say this haha
Do we? I was born post-1998, so I might not be the best source.
"ended"
He should know about it now because a ton of people there were angry at him when he talked about it in his video about visiting Ireland.
The whole Irish divide is also divisive in Britain depending on who you ask. I personally don’t think that Northern Ireland should be British and that the Protestants don’t have much to worry about by being a part of ireland although my posh teacher at school is very patriotic and feels that northern Ireland should be British.
I would never forget the day Philippines declared war on Canada because of Trash 😂

@@JJMcCullough we are ready to invade the western coast of Canada. But all jokes aside we are really pissed at the garbage hence the president's joke about the Philippines going to war
It is the most laughable cause of war followed by literally a bucket that caused Modena to declare war at Bologna.
Speaking of the Philippines, the People Power Revolution is now seen by some... people... or even... "people"... as a mistake, and a "dilawan" (with the typical DDS negative connotation) takeover. And it seems like historical revisionism is on it's way given Imee Marcos will be elected Senator...
Another dividing point for the US is the American Civil War. Many schools and colleges even like splitting the teaching of American History into two separate courses along pre- and post-civil war lines.
I gotta agree with this. America pre-Civil War is pretty much unrecognizable from the post-Civil War both socially, economically and politically
@@coby4480 how can I learn about how different it was?
I would say in the US 9/11 is probably the most current dividing point. We live in a post 9/11 world.

Y2K ended up being a "non-event" in part because of a LOT of hard work by a LOT of IT folks. I basically lived on a plane for all of 1999 doing upgrades in prep for it. A lot of my colleagues did too.

A defining watershed moment for the end of 'Catholic Ireland' and the beginning of 'Modern Ireland', was the passage of the divorce referendum in 1995. It passed by a margin of less than half a percent, and was a major blow to the influence of religious conservatives in Irish politics and society from then on.
@@Justicsgenie it passed by about an average of one vote per ballot box.
And there's a new divorce referendum coming up, which will liberalise things further.

Also to add about the Catholic Ireland part. Yeah alot of people declared the defeat of "Catholic Ireland" (also called Old Ireland) with the referenda but also it get tied to really horrific events such as the Magdalene Laundries and the Mother and Baby homes. It's also sometimes linked with emigration as Ireland only became a net immigrant country very recently
Also in Ireland we had an era of prosperity and economic growth called the Celtic Tiger. It lasted from the mid nineties to the 2008 economic crisis and is associated with the rule of Prime Minister Bertie Ahern
Technically Yuan Shikai declared himself emperor of China between 1915-16, which is a somewhat notable amount of time and he did have proper power. So in a way he was the last emperor, though that is debatable for many reasons.
Then you have to consider when the last Qing emperor was briefly restored in 1917.
I guess if you wanted to go as far forward as possible, you could go to 1945 at at the end of ww2 when he stepped down as emperor of Manchukuo, that being the last time anyone was the last emperor of any part of China and when he lost all imperial recognition. But that would be the least likely to be counted of them all. I don’t think any of these should be counted though as they all happened in the turmoil after the monarchy was abolished.

in Norway we have "dansketiden" (the danish times/era) 1380 - 1814 (when we got our constitution and got our independence from Denmark). Then Sweden came and and started Unionstiden (the union era) until 1905
In modern times, I'd say pre-Oil and Post-Oil is monumental.
Imagine being ruled by Denmark Kappa
You were saying about nostalgia for dictatorship, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. I would have a look into ‘Ostalgie’ movement in Germany, which is nostalgia for East Germany.
Daniel James Collier East Germany still votes very differently from West Germany. The east tends to much less centrist than the west, supporting parties like Die Linke (succeeded communists) and AFD (very anti communist).
From my experience, those born in the 1930's-1950's in former red states, tend to be very economically left wing but very anti government and tend to have moderate views on the former states, but those born in the late sixties tend to be very anti-communist as they were the generation who overthrew the red goverments.
Same for some in the former Yugoslavia too.
I mean there was a large amount of East German population that didn't want to be absorbed into West Germany. They would much rather have had political freedoms and freedom of movement while maintaining an independent nation.
Was not expecting to cry at the adorable VW and Trabant buddies.
In the Uk we tend to describe eras by the monarch of the time. So people may say “back in Victorian times” referring to Queen Victoria’s rule between 1837 and 1901. The term Edwardian is also used a lot and so on... the phrases are usually used to refer to architecture though. You’ll see them say things on daytime tv programs like: “look at the lovely Edwardian style windows”. Going back to the 1500’s the broad term ‘Tudor times’ is used in reference to the Tudor dynasty in power.
In El Salvador according to my mom we document things pre and post civil war in the 1980s that ended in accord in 92'. Most people dont talk about it (even my mom more so having experienced the war) but she says a lot of people refer to the 14 families who ruled a lot before the communist guerillas from the countryside held a civil war with the mainly rich capital.
Im an Indigenous Canadian and I often refer to the past in "pre" and "post-contact" when referring to my ancestors history in North America! Neat video J.J. 😊 Cheers from Saskatchewan!
In Italy, of you talk about the years of lead, we generally think about the 1970s, when there was a bit of communist terrorism.
We also make a distinction between 1946-1994 and post-1994, which we call first and second republic although the political system never changed
@@Gmagnani100 Btw, can you please explain me why is there such a distinction?
@@SirioResteghini the first republic was dominated by a catch-all party called the Christian democracy which was full of corruption but also gave jobs to almost everyone
@Marechal Zolotoy toto cutugno was a singer as far as I know.
Usually, republics are numbered since adopting a new constitution.
It was not the case in Italy; the 2nd republic was the period of time since the old three main parties( Communist, socialist, Christian democrats) either split or changed name and the rise of Berlusconi as a political leader.
A bit? you mean a lot? and also far right terrorism too
In Cyprus, the twentieth century is usually divided into:
Anglokratia: (Greek for “held by the English”) when the island was a British Colony until 1960 (technically it officially became a British colony in 1914, when the UK declared war in the Ottoman empire, which technically owned Cyprus but allowed the UK to exercise sovereignty as a “protectorate”)
Pre-Invasion or intercommunal conflict:Before the Turkish invasion during a time when then the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots had terrible relations due to nationalist extremist armed terrorist groups which slaughtered each other, but the two communities were not physically divided (two Turkish invasions where attempted before the infamous one) from 1960 until 1974
And Post-Invasion: 1974-now, the era after the Turkish invasion,. Ever since then every president has said they are going to solve the “Cyprus Problem” (reunite the island) and everyone has failed. In fact, the first president of Cyprus, Makarios III died from a heart attack caused by heavy smoking as a result of the difficulty in being a political ruler at the time.

And after Orba (New Order), it's called era Reformasi (Reformation era). This also kinda separates Indonesian generations instead of Gen XYZ thing, just like Rebolusyong EDSA did to fellow Filipinos.
In Serbia (and the other former Yugoslav countries), we like to divide eras based on the government type in the past. Especially for the 20th century. We refer to points in time as the kingdom era, communist era, Milošević era etc.

In America the Civil War acts a cultural divider too, it's known as Pre and Post Antebellum, and in the south, it's known as reconstruction.
Ciaban K I’m pretty sure Antebellum (1607-1865) and postbellum (1865-1965) only applied to the south. Also, the reconstruction was the beginning of the postbellum era.
Wow, I didn't know that the rest of the country uses a different word than Reconstruction, btw, I live in the south
Yeah the word “antebellum” when taken into Latin terms means “before the war.” So “post antebellum” is kind of a contradictory term, while pre-antebellum is just outright redundant lol

Man this was an especially good video JJ. Loved all the little jokes like the New Order and Bolsinaro audio cues.
In Northern Ireland, our current era is seen to have began on 10th April 1998 (Good Friday 1998) which was when the Good Friday Agreement was signed. It was a peace treaty signed by the UK and Irish governments and the political parties in Northern Ireland. It marked the end of the previous era of violence known as the Troubles, that lasted c. 1968-1998, and set up the power-sharing government in N.I.
A video that's sometimes used to depict it is a clip of Bono (yes, *that* Bono) holding hands with the unionist (pro-UK) leader David Trimble and the nationalist (pro-United Ireland) leader John Hume on stage at a peace concert. Trimble and Hume both went on to win the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize.
I always thought of revolutions as being something from the ancient past but so many of these have happened in my lifetime. I am so glad for JJ helping me escape my bubble of ignorance :)

5:55 all hail His Excellency the Marshal Jean Chretien
Franco's death became a running gag on Saturday Night Live in its early years.
Thank you J.J. love your work
In Portugal everything is almost always separated as "Pre-April 25th" and "Post-April 25th".
The term "April the 25th" comes from the 25th of April 1974, when we had our big revolution that toppled the Salazar dictatorship.
Famous pictures of that period are a closeup of a bunch of soldiers on the sidewalk with red carnations in their guns' barrels, a florist handing out carnations to the soldiers and (most famously) a soldier taking down a portrait of Salazar, the dictator, who at the time was already dead.
In Vietnam, I recall that the image which marked the Fall of Saigon for them (or, more accurately, the moment most Vietnamese associate with Reunification, similar to the German conception of 1989) was not the image of the mad scramble above the Embassy, but rather a tank crashing down the gates of the Independence Palace, where the President resided. It was in a lot of museums. Their (official) viewpoint on the symbolism of that moment was not one of triumph over the US necessarily, but rather the closure of an era dating from 1954 to 1975.
My friend said he would love a UA-cam channel that covers interesting topics and is also entertaining, I told him he just described JJ McCullough.
Half Asleep Chris is similar.

PXWang Eddie I wouldn’t say it’s a Chinese element since after all it’s the Taiwanese national day. I also don’t think the pro-independence people would necessarily avoid the event but perhaps some would like to refrain from mentioning it
6:34 I think every Spanish person from the ages 12-the oldest one, know this by memory, it is something that changed Spain and still influences Spanish politics up to this day, it both was the end of an era but also the beginning of grater freedom in spain

In Iceland I would say we talk about pre-crash and post-crash. Referring to the economic crash of 2008, the years right before being called "góðærið" (the boom) where people spent more and more and took loans left, right and center.
Speaking of Quebec, how about the Richard Riot in Montreal (17 March 1955), which some say marks the beginning of the Quiet Revolution?
4:06 Prime Minister. Spain is a constitutional monarchy, and hasn't been a republic since 1936 or 1939 if you count the Republican Side of the Spanish Civil War.
I am aware that this person can be referred to as the “President of the Government” but Prime Minister in still official in Spanish law and is more frequently used and doesn’t carry the same republican connotations
Here on Brazil,we call the Getulio Vargas dictatorship as "era vargas" and during that we also have the "estado novo" "the new state"
It could be fun to examine the various generation names, and the transitions between them. Also I've always been intrigued how some decades got names (gay 90's, roaring 20's, etc) . Oh and as for as era's, the Brit's (and retro Sci-Fi punks) love to name era's after that monarch (Edwardian London, Victorian tech, Elizabethan styles).
Nice video again JJ
The era after “ La grande noirceur “ is name “ La révolution tranquile “ witch means the quiet revolution
Brazil also names its governments in eras like the Vargas Era (1930-1945/1951-1954) another example is the Sarney Era (1985-1990).
also we have a few other eras like hte Sword Republic (a government headed by two militaryman from 1889 to 1894) the Old Republic (an oligharchy government from 1894 to 1930) and also the New Republic (1985-currently)
i forgot to mention that there was the First and Second reigns when Brazil was a monarchy
And the Vargas era have 3 periods. Provisory government (1930-1934), constitucional government (1934-1937), and the New state (1937-1946).
6:14 older North Koreans are often nostalgic for the Kim Il Sung era. The food distribution system still worked and North Korea was more prosperous than the Sputh
In Iceland we talk about pre and post recession (2008) because the country was experiencing an economic boom in the mid 2000s. The exact change of the eras is 6th of October 2008 when former prime minister Geir H. Haarde adressed the nation on national television and ended it with the Iconic line "God bless Iceland". We also have the phenomonon "the party of 2007" which was a series of extravagant birthdays, and company parties by the upper class of Iceland.
Hey JJ! Thanks for the vid.
As for Ukraine - a country in the Post-Soviet space, we tend to divide our national lifetime not only into the Soviet and Post-Soviet eras, but also mark the Revolution of Dignity of 2014 as a significant point in our history. That year the people of Ukraine chose to get rid of Russian influence on our state (which has rather tragic consequences) and to strengthen our Euro/Euro-Atlantic integration efforts.

In Israel we use both the Gregorian Calendar and the Jewish calendar which is completely different. A year is 353 days long and once every few years a leap month is added so the calendar wouldn't drift away from the seasons. “The Spirit of Vatican II” backfired on the Church. It was the nail in the coffin for many catholic strongholds, like Quebec and Ireland. You’ll notice many young Catholics returning to tradition, because they see what progressivism in the Church has wrought

"Umro je drug Tito" is the era divider in Serbia
It's for most of the Yugoslav nations.
The painting at 12:30 is actually of the 1864 Quebec conference (although apparently the artist took some liberties and included people who were only at the earlier conference in Charlotteown).
You probably already know this but English historical events are often referred to using whatever monarch was in power for example, the Victorian era for Queen Victoria or the Georgian era for King George. If you go back though it starts to get confusing as monarchs start to be called the same name so it doesn’t always work and the Elizabethan era can either refer to today or Queen Elizabeth I’s era so that also gets confusing.
WW1 is often considered in my part of Canada (Ontario) to be a more true beginning of Canada in it's modern, independent nation form. Some people believe this so strongly that our history course in school doesn't start until WW1, because anything before then is considered to be provincial history. This idea comes from a quote from a veteran talking more specifically about Vimy Ridge "We went up Vimy Ridge as Albertans and Nova Scotians. We came down as Canadians".
On a related note, do other parts of Canada talking so much about Vimy Ridge? Here is told as the greatest Canadian victory and basically the only nationalistic moment in our history. Also, has anyone outside of Canada even heard about Vimy? It seems like an exaggerated victory.
In New Zealand the most recent epoch would be post-1984. A lot of our politics revolves around the changes that came about when the government led by Rob Muldoon was defeated and replaced by a reformist Labour government, led by David Lange.
Best part of this was the snap election Muldoon called, it appears he was drunk when he called the election:

Your strong uruguayan fanbase supports you!
Also very important markers in uruguayan society were Jose Batlle y Ordoñez's presidencies in which a welfare state was established and laws were passed granting women's right to vote, 8 hour work day and divorce as well as secularization and nationalization of various utilities companies. That was the time when statism became deep rooted in the DNA of Uruguayans up to these days. There is an old saying that goes "Es lo que soño el pepe batlle" (that was what "pepe batlle" dreamt of") used when something good happens to someone.
In the UK, many historians studying older British history tend to use the ‘British Union’ as a big marker in time. The ‘British Union’ was when Scotland and England (of which Wales was a part of) united to form Great Britain. I’m not sure if the Irish have something similar, but I would assume they do with the unification or possibly the revolution.

Italy also had 'The Years of Lead' - it represented a long period of far left and far right radicalism where both groups led serious terror campaigns against each other, involving assassination and kidnapping of government officials.

The vote for independence was July 2, 1776. July 4 was when the Declaration was sent out to the colonies to be read, it was sent under the dateline ‘July 4’ (the date of publication). America has been celebrating the 4th as that was the day the colonists learned of the vote for independence.
The motion for independence was proposed by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia (1732-1794) at the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 1, 1776.
Pretty cool! You me confederation periods match up with the antebellum period in the United states and the post civil war era
Well in uruguay we have this "golden era" just like brazil's, this was caused because of WWII basically. We stood neutral and instead exported lots of stuff, like meat and leather, to the participants of the war (Uruguay is known for having many cows lol). So countries needed this stuff to feed and clothe their soldiers, and we basically became rich. When the war ended and countries started producing stuff for themselves our economy recessed, and that was the end of the golden era. Then became the military dictatorship during '73-'85 which is kinda referred as our dark past. But you can talk about many different periods in uruguayan history, our modern history begins in 1903 with "Batllismo" (the name of the ideology that ruled us) which ended in 1933 with a coup d'etat. Then came these golden years (where people called Uruguay "the Switzerland of America"), then some "meh" years which nobody cares about, then the dictatorship, and after that we reach the modern era, 1985 - now.

In India, we have the SAKA Era which is different from the Gregorian Calendar. In this Era every year has a name, the first year is named Prabhava, then Vibhava etc. The year of my birth was named Pramodoota.
I was expecting you to mention North Korea's Juche calendar system when you mentioned the DPRK for a second.
And yes you did do a cool mention to Quebec- also after the "Grande Noirceur" you have the "Revolution Tranquille" (Quiet Revolution) which was not only the decline to the RC church the rise of Quebec progressive ideologies and it's late 20th century nationalism.
Also on the topic of old Communist nostalgia- Yugoslavia is a really interesting one too because of it's relative autonomy in Europe, stable government under Tito, and its place in the whole pre-war/post war era in the west...
I'm a simple Filipino . I see the Philippine flag, I click immediately.

I have my own personal year tracking system. It’s called the Parlia-Years! It starts on 3 April 1721 when Robert Warpole became the first British Prime Minister. Currently, we are in Parlia-Year 299.
Similarly, we also use the terms “Pre-Thatcher” and “Post-Thatcher” in reference to when Margret Thatcher stepped down as the Prime Minister in 1991.
Again, Another Great Video J.J! I own a American Calendar, so If you want one I’d be glad to give one to you!
Jack Eckhard really??? I do!

Me: wow
This "temers" and "dilmas" thing for money is not a real thing in Brazil... it is more an internet slang, and for younger people. No one uses it in the streets.
in australia we have post and pre galliopoli occasionally
I like how this is one of only a few videos where he mentions Quebec and doesn't diss them at all!
Pre-covid and post-covid could be a thing
6:12 It's Kim Jeong Il, not Kim Jeong Eun.
Youre my favourite youtuber ever!
8:38 That magazine cover, showing a woman holding a cucumber with "My first Banana" written next to her, poked fun not necessarily at East German shelteredness, but at the fact that the first thing every East German did when entering West Germany was buy bananas because they were extremely rare in the GDR. Some stores actually ran out of them.
Aaaayeeee im on a J.J. McCullough videoo 😎✌
Also, I would say other important moment in Spanish history would be the "official" end of the Spanish Empire with the defeat on the Spanish-American War in 1898. Spain lost its last remnants of the old Empire, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Phillipines. It was a huge psichological and economical blow for the country.
A famous cathphrase that is still used today about the time is "mas se perdió en Cuba y volvieron cantando" (We lost way more important things in Cuba but the soldiers came back singing), and people use it to take drama or weight out of a bad situation.
Bruh I saw your comment as the Spanish part started in the video
