DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: CUBAN LEADER FIDEL CASTRO VISIT

Fidel Castro on Sunday met former Dominican Republic President Joaquin Balaguer - staunchly anti-communist and one of Latin America's last "caudillos" or strongmen.
On the fourth day of his first visit to the Dominican Republic, Castro also met an old friend, one-time Marxist and former President Juan Bosch.
Castro then visited Bani, the hometown of General Maximo Gomez, who fought for Cuba's independence from Spain in the late 19th century.
On the fourth day of Castro's first visit to the Dominican Republic, two old foes sat together and exchanged memories.
Fidel Castro and Joaquin Balaguer - two ageing foot soldiers of the Cold War - spent nearly an hour at Balaguer's Santo Domingo home.
Under Balaguer, the Dominican Republic was staunchly anti-communist and one of the biggest U-S aid recipients in the Caribbean.
His meeting with Castro was seen as a symbolic closing chapter for two politicians who have ruled through force and pragmatism.
Castro also met an old friend, former President Juan Bosch, and Peggy Cabral, widow of the late leftist politician Jose Francisco Pena Gomez.
Bosch, a onetime Marxist, spent time in exile in Cuba.
With Castro's help, he plotted in the 1940s to overthrow Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
Bosch gained the Dominican presidency in 1962 only to be quickly overthrown by the army.
When leftists tried to restore him to power in 1965, the U-S - fearing another communist Cuba in the Caribbean - invaded with 20-thousand Marines.
Later in the day, Castro visited the south coast city of Bani.
There he paid tribute to General Maximo Gomez, who fought for Cuba's independence from Spain in the late 19th century.
He also donated 250-thousand U-S dollars to help build a school in the city.
The money had been given to Castro as a gift from Libyan president, Moamar Gadhafi in recognition of Cuba's so-called defense of human rights.
Many of Castro's supporters turned out to see the Cuban president.

Protests against Castro's visit have been few and far between.
One man from Miami, holding a picture of Gomez, said he was not happy about the visit.

"Dominicans have the right to bring him (Castro) here. Welcome Fidel to Santa Domingo, but as a Cuban, as a patriot I'm upset about it."

Amidst the Bani crowd, he was jostled by Castro supporters before being escorted away by police.
In Bani, Castro laid a wreath at a monument to General Gomez and was presented a key to the coffee-producing city, located 100 kilometres (65 miles) west of the capital, Santo Domingo.
Castro noted in a speech that Cuba's 19th-century guerrilla war against Spain was interrupted by the 1898 U-S invasion of the island.
He said Spanish colonialism was replaced by U-S domination, and full independence wasn't won until his own revolutionary triumph in 1959.
