    Thank you so much for your very well done instructional video concerning the M40A1 Gas mask, I just purchased an M40A1 from Fort Bragg Surplus, total price $132.29. I just retired from FDNY-EMS, I had to turn in my issued gas mask, the MSA Millennium CBRN. After viewing your video I was able to apply the second skin and apply the eye outserts. You did in one video what took the FDNY one day to do. I feel confident with the M40A1 Gas Mask thanks to you, Thank you

    As a former federal hazmat contractor for many years, I can assure you that military CBRN field gear is NOT made to save your life.. It's made to keep you alive just long enough for you to complete your mission.
    If you want to survive and be protected, you have to have big $$$$ and you still have to have enough knowledge of the PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) of your equipment. Even a fully encapsulated LvL A with SCBA, will not last forever. The suit will break down at the seams within hours and you have to get out of the hot zone to change air tanks every 30 to 45min and I promise you that you WILL take your mask off when you run out of air.. Also there are different cartridges for respirators. Organic vapor, chemical vapor, ect... the cbrn filters are only rated for certain threats and fail at different times based on what threat you encounter and at what level and time. I mentioned a SCBA also supplied air (a hose you drag on the ground that leads back out of the hot zone) only because that is the only way to protect yourself when you don't have the knowledge, Intel, or equipment to detect, what is in the environment. A post disaster can leak non-weaponized chemicals from industrial and commercial facilities. Plants, rail lines, tank farms, all have things that can kill you in an instant if you breath them in. You won't even know it because you will be unconscious by the time you do. It happens that quick. Chlorine for example.
    Bottom line is you need to know what you are getting into before you think that buying a mask is going to save you from everything. It wont, and it's a false sense of security for many.

      Agreed. This isn’t life saving equipment it’s life sustaining. As you said it’s used to keep you alive long enough to complete your mission objective and or get out of the contaminated zone. Many people get that wrong. Glad to see someone who knows their stuff!

    The US surplus laws forbids anyone outside the states owning stuff like this so in places like the UK it is extremely hard to get these, I use alternatives like the S10 and Soviet PRWU as it was used with rocket refuelling crews, and filters are cheap and common

    Thank you for that info on the second skin. Really helped a lot. I wish you would have gone into a bit of detail about how to carry the mask inside the bag. There is a very specific way to insert it into the carry bag.

    • @ForbiddTV
      @ForbiddTV  5 років тому +3

      Correct, and there are I think three ways to wear the bag on your person as well. The straps for the bag have always been confusing to me. The instruction manual for the M-40 has the details about inserting into the bag and different methods of wearing the bag.

      @@ForbiddTV Hi Craig! Best I can figure (I have the full manual as well as the short laminated one), is the mask goes in the carrier chin first, with the front facing towards the outside of the carrier...ie facing the outside if you were wearing the carrier. There is a video on UA-cam where a guy just buckled two of the carrying straps to holes in his pistol belt. That would probably be the way i would wear it, since I would most likely be wearing the pistol belt with canteens and holster, etc., in an emergency. I have two of the collapsible 2-quart canteens with the valve in them. BTW...if someone doesn't have the plastic covers for the lenses, it would be a good idea to get them. They prevent the inner lenses from getting scratched and cracked. You can find them on E-Bay, or a place I like called Venture Surplus for $12.99.
      One thing I'm looking into, is attaching a battery-operated air pump with the hoses intended for the armored crew M40. As you no doubt know, some filters/masks are tough on old folks to breathe through. E-bay has a small pump for $53.56 with 40MM connections. Think I will order it:

    The M40 respirator has a second skin of burtyl rubber that goes over the front. This was because the mask is made out silicone, which is extremely vulnerable to blister agents, such as mustard gas. If silicon makes contact with any type of blister agent, it causers the rubber deteriorate at an alarming rate. This was probably one of the reasons why they replace M40 in favour of the newer respirator mask series M50.

    • @ForbiddTV
      @ForbiddTV  4 роки тому +1

      No. Although I have some eyeglass inserts, it takes an optometrist to make special lenses for the frames. Contact lenses are your best bet.

    • @domp5014
      @domp5014 4 роки тому +1

      You can’t wear contact lenses tho as the air inside the mask is dry. You run the risk of eye damage from you contact lenses and your eyes drying out from the lack of moisture in the air breathed in from the filter. The manual also states that you shouldn’t wear contact lenses as well (this applies with all full face respirators/gas masks).

    just from what i've noticed on the mask market, for buying surplus it's best to wait until it's well out of service and then some, as the only way you'd be buying surplus ones is if the surplus warehouses that extra old stock is kept in needs to be cleaned out for room for the next mask.

      I would add that for decon you should use only cold water and any avoid all moisturizers. Stuff like conditioners can bind the radioactive material to proteins in your skin and hair. And hot water will open pores and allow material in. Good practice if you had exposed bare skin is to first decon with cold water twice for 20 min each and then a 30 min decon of 10 min cold 15 min hot and 5 min cold. Drying in between each. If that is not an option then just cold water and lots of it. Wash head to toe, try to keep the contaminated water off the body as best you can.
      If done properly you should be able to glow in the dark. 😆
