    If ya’ll don’t know or forgot. She was literally the last American to go. It came down to her Vault score to determine the outcome of team USA’s medal placement. And it was so tight, she needed a huge score. That Olympics was held in Atlanta and the patriotism for every athlete and event was extreme. So she had the entirety of America watching live on NBC. The team event was held primetime in the US so we saw it live. The weight of that was not lost on them.

      Actually no they didn’t need her second vault. They didn’t know at the time but afterwards once the Russians and Romanians finished they figured out that the math worked out that Kerri could have scratched that second vault and they still would have won. But no one talks about that since it tarnishes the story as what she did was still such a true Olympic moment.

      @chfman4912 Місяць тому

      @@madeleinegrayson8372 are you a moron? I literally said that. The fact is they DID NOT NEED HER VAULT TO SECURE THE GOLD MEDAL THEY JUST DIDN’T KNOW IT AT THE TIME. Which again is what I said. That is the fact and it doesn’t change no matter how many stupid ways you try to frame it. They THOUGHT they needed it at the time because not every gymnast on the other teams had gone yet so the math had not been completed on all the scores so they had no way of knowing for sure. They just knew they could eliminate any possibility of being overtaken by having her vault but in the end her vault could have been scratched and they would have won anyway. And THAT is how it worked in the real world.

      @@eevee2411 It's nothing to applaud that she elected to of her own volition to do a vault that is one of the single most iconic, memorable and incredible moments in sporting history at 19 years old to secure a Gold Medal for herself, her team and her country?
      People have painted this amazing moment as a tragedy where a broken, scared little girl was shoved out there and forced to do this second vault and that isn't the case as she herself has repeatedly confirmed and even wrote a book about it.
      Quit taking away her strength, courage and accomplishment by trying to play her out as a victim. She's a champion and a legend and she's proud of what she did. In that moment she achieved something even greater than JUST America's First Team Gold.
      She also didn't retire because of an ankle injury. She became a professional skater for the Ice Capades and Disney on Ice, was a UCLA Gymnastics coach and runs marathons now on that ankle.

      No, this really isn't something worth idolizing.
      She was bullied and harassed into going again, even though she knew she was terribly injured. This injury ended her career at age 18. Destroying yourself physically and mentally at an extremely young age for one moment of glory is not a lesson that young people should learn.
      Instead, they should learn to protect themselves and their boundaries. That their lives matter more than a gold metal or a good story. There's a reason why Simone is still competing and dominating a decade past when Strug had to retire from the sport forever, and it's because she advocates for her own health and safety over glory and gold.
      *THAT'S* the lesson young people need to learn.

      It was fear, not patriotism. The abuse she endured at the hands of her deflected Romanian coaching team was absolutely disgusting.

      @MegR1999 if she had given up, she would have been blamed for the US losing. No one wants that. It doesn't take "abuse" to make her understand that she needed to do the second vault or be responsible for their loss. She also wasn't injured super badly to start. She clearly felt capable of going again.
