As a cutter back in the late 70's in SE Alaska, we used square files on all our chains, Oregon chains. Some fellows used 045's, I used a Husq. 2100's with 42" and 48" Oregon bars. The older guys had grinders but a couple of us who couldn't afford grinders filed by hand every night for the next day. The saws stayed on our patches and we brought our chains, six or seven, in each night for sharpening so it was eat, cut, eat, sharpen, and sleep each day and then do it all over again. So as you might know, you get fairly good at running a square file or you don't sleep. Learned to file both ways, in or out, left or right handed it didn't matter, just get it done; but for me that's now is ancient history. Keep cutting!

Buckin I've got a question about square filing vs round filing. Does my square file sharp chain last longer than the round file chain? there has to be a difference. does the chain life differ between the two styles? You are the GOAT of "Arborists" "Love ya Be kind"
I mostly do chain saw milling. Have a 72inch mill. I want to try it for milling but maybe not such a steep angle. Maybe 12-15 degrees. Does the square work or dry wood as well as green ?? Like on a standing dead tree etc??? Or stuff that’s been down for a year or so wonder how it does with that ???
Great chain sharpening info !! Love the video. I've never square ground. Very COOL !!! You can actually see the teeth well. Thank you !! Is most of the wood Fir ??
Is this the chain Husqvarna calls the X cut chain? I did notice a slower cut with the round file into the chain. But the chain with the X-cut rips so much faster. Awesome Job Buckin

Stihl 064 and call it a day 😁
@@BuckinBillyRaySmith ah baloney! That 064 can be affixed with a bigger carb/cylinder that’ll bring her to 99cc... at 14 lbs ! Mine is only 85cc but I guarantee after operating you’d be reconsidering the Husky / Stihl debate 😁... The 044 was Andreas STIHLS baby 🍼 and the 064,066 will run with (and exceed) the Husqvarna saws of that era when righteously modded. I have 2 Husqvarners : 395xp and 572xp but none of the older saws like you run. They both perform great 👍 but neither will touch the 064 hee-hee ... In fact , the 064 will STOMP all over a brand new 500i (no contest) despite being 26yrs old. Better cylinder flow and none of this EPA-friendly rubbish we are stuck with today
@UCsIFvStf9Oz99GMitW4vD_g testament to the man and the channel. Blows my mind Buckin that you take the time to interact with the community. I already have a zippy little husky 55 I’ve ported that’s been great I’m just looking for more grunt and a saw with a full wrap handle. Sounds like the 266 saw is the ticket. Thanks again for your wisdom and kindness.
@UCsIFvStf9Oz99GMitW4vD_g me Hotwoods ported 441c will equal or exceed any 371,372xp in your fleet Buckin! And that ain’t greasy-kids stuff .... look at this guy split - south Buffalo Irish guy with a speedy , deadly swing ....... ua-cam.com/users/shortsVIFsjbr80rA?feature=share

I think ill try the square file, you mad it look easy, bovergout
great video like allways buckin.
thx friend
Buckin I've got a question about square filing vs round filing. Does my square file sharp chain last longer than the round file chain? there has to be a difference. does the chain life differ between the two styles? You are the GOAT of "Arborists" "Love ya Be kind"
Round last longer than square and its easier filing but square is faster cutting up to 20%
@@chip_stack Thanks Afthanom
square ground lasts way longer than hand filing round.
@@BuckinBillyRaySmith Thanks Buckin! Be Kind…
I have been using a triangle file for my eager beaver 2.0 and it carries a 16in bar like a boss around the house
good job!.....thanks 4 video. be kind.
Great chain sharpening info !! Love the video. I've never square ground. Very COOL !!! You can actually see the teeth well. Thank you !! Is most of the wood Fir ??
👍
Is this the chain Husqvarna calls the X cut chain? I did notice a slower cut with the round file into the chain. But the chain with the X-cut rips so much faster. Awesome Job Buckin
You will have to give this new stihl hexa chain a whirl. Good review video on it id say.
Full chisel sharpened with nicholson triangle file, use triangle for 40 years, makes good hook cuts soft wood like mad.
👍 From Cadillac Michigan
Excellent closeups and explanations. I am watching your great work you do. I have a Homelite Super xl922 and I was wondering if I can get some advices from your experience. I am new in this saws.I am from Romania and this saws are not common in this part of the world.
Awesome im trying to get better at square Files myself, always good content 👌

Hey Buckin Billy Ray, I just got my hands on a sassy Husky 335xpt but it needs work. I'm having a hard time finding a replacement bar. Ya wouldn't know what'd fit would ya? Thanks for vids & positivity!
this gonna sound terrible but ,, the chain that fits that saw is the chain that fits that saw ,.lol google is fantastic,, great lil' saw
So it'll only run the intenz chain? Even if I put a different bar on it? Say an Oregon? Thanks for the info man! I'll keep digging to try & find something!
If you file like that until you're chain is done, will you not have half a tooth remaining below the depth of the file, crazy man?
If you could find a table of file sizes for chain sizes and put it on here, that would be awesome!
👍🙏🇮🇳 good sir ji
You mentioned something about not using a square filed chain around rocks. Please elaborate.
