I love hearing Keith talk. He’s a really cool dude and has been one of my musical heroes for years. I bet Keith never thought a guy who’s turning 25 in 2021 would ever be a fan of his but here I am!
Thank you guys. I found this tonight and it has been sheer joy. Keith was my gateway at 14 years old. I was given a copy of Golden shower of hits and found my musical tribe. I love all music genres but am still most loyal to hardcore punk. Finding out Keith is in recovery/sober gives me hope and hit me hard. As much as a fan as I am of all Keith Morris does I never knew he was sober. It just never crossed my mind. Weirdly enough he said he got sober the year I found CIRCLE JERKS in 1988. Punk and Hardcore and specifically the era of black flag circle jerks, fear, doa, dk, x,Minutemen, germs, tsol, bad religion, meatmen, misfits, cramps, bad brains, minor threat, flipside and maximum rocknroll zines...and so many more bands and writers and just the people I've met including my wife it all traces back to that record and those bands. Kieth,Hetson,Sloss,Chuck Biscuits, lucky, and all the Circle Jerks started it all for me. When I saw decline for the first time a couple months later Fear and the Circle Jerks stood out the most but I loved all of it. Punk Rock Fundamentalists will tell you those are the gateway more mainstream bands but it was just the best stuff 79-89 hardcore punk in the u.s. and all over the world was the life defining movement for me. It informed everything. I still to this day find new bands I love in the genre of punk rock and all the little categories from power violence to crust to pop punk and melodic hardcore just to name a few but honestly it was those Cali and Midwest hardcore punk bands in the 80s that own me to this day. Keith was the beginning of all that for me and black flag and sst records kept it going strong. Minutemen also. I like that all those bands sound different but are still kind of under one ethos. I also could criticise that same era for a time when many bands in punk or hardcore sounded generic. In hardcore especially in the 80s there was a 6 to 8 year period where any town in the U.S.A. had 4 bands that were trying to be MDC or jfa or just play fast scream generic crap. Not that Mdc or jfa were crap they were originals but in smaller scenes back then that same 3 sounds thing was happening a lot. My point is Kieth Morris and Watt and Henry and Ian and LEE Ving and Bob mould and Jay Mascis seemed to bring all there musical love into it. No uniform. No conformity to punk rule books. And Kieth was the most stand out example of that ethos in that era and that made punk rock endure in all its diferent forms. The late 70s and probably from about 98 till now had more diversity in sound and thought because of guys like Keith. So thanks so much for this podcast you have a loyal fan and supporter from this day forward .
I really wish that I was leaving in his era, I feel so out of place during these times I'm 37 and I hate music nowadays... The 70's and 80's produced so much great music, fast-forward to nowadays and tickets are $100+ to see the Descendants... Fucking selling their souls for their dignity, playing music for the people that they wrote it about.
My father passed away last night, and for some reason that I don't understand, listening to this episode (on repeat) is helping me deal with it. Odd I know.
Hope you are doing ok. Losing a parent is one of the hardest things in life. My dad passed away 10 years ago and I still think of him everyday!! Cheers man✌🏼
@@Rob78169 Thank you bro, I appreciate that. It is a void that never gets filled again....as we get older, those voids stack up. Ohh...I am also a Rob from 1978!
Nice talk you guys. I was living up in trinity county and Redding ca. shit is so bizarre out there and I ended up in reaspat a insane place. Love you Keith and I am so bummed that I missed your last circle jerks show. Please run for king of the world I will help put in what ever work needed. Take care brothers and enjoy your struggles
Thanks you guys. I really enjoyed this interview and and I think that Keith is the best. My life was forever changed when I heard black flag while launching of an enormous launch ramp in Topanga canyon Los Angeles. Thanks for letting me give me a channel or outlet for all my teenage angst. Just giving a shout of praise. You guys are all decent and important voices for rebellious our rocking family. Please keep creating and getting really rad music for the future insulation of rebels. Take care dude’s
There are moments here when Keith is mid-monologue, staring off into the middle distance searching for his next thought and he resembles no one so much as Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys.
Thanks to the producer for asking pertinent questions , joe Arthur is a weird dude. I wish they would have touched on circle perks album wonderful , a truly great record
03:05 - Dude, THE LOCUST are so AMAZING!!! Saw them numerous times with several different bands: STRATFORD MERCENARIES (ex members of CRASS and DIRT I believe), AT THE DRIVE-IN, MURDER CITY DEVILS and LIGHTING BOLT. I think their drummer was Dave Astor rather than Gabe Serbian though.
I saw Keith play a benefit show with the Rollins Band in 2003. He ruled, just as OFF! rules. The interviewers sounded stoned, lacked in charisma, and failed to ask any challengeing questions.
LOL! @1:23:23 Joe is like "Isn't cool how everything is just starting to bleed together, like you can be an athlete and a punk?" Keith is like "Well, all the power to you if you can understand the situation, I think the whole thing is ridiculous and life is ridiculous."😂
God damn, Corey Feldman really let himself go!! Kidding! Keith rules. His love for Mick Ronson and all the other 70s band he mentioned is right on track. Long live the Circle Jerks. So bummed that the tour didn't happen last year.
"...why is there a white stripe up there in the sky?.." lmaooo! Im glad Im not the only one who thinks about that white line in the sky. I adore Keith. He looks so well. Looks good. I wanna cuddle and smooch him. He is so fantastic♥
Keith is so funny. It took me a while to figure out who he reminds me of in this interview while talking about science/conspiracy. It's sort of like a couple people, like if Terrence McKenna and Jessie Ventura had a love child....lol!
Jesus. Right as Keith is about to get into dirt on these emails from Henry, dude jumps in about Danzig. Way to derail right as he's about to say what we wanted to hear.
One of my favorite people of all time and this vid is additional proof of that. I'd say the only thing I don't agree with him on is his love for sports. That said, I understand his view on athleticism cuz I still sorta skate.
Yes the Misfits got back together because of money. It's common knowledge that the initial agreement of the reunion shows was that whoever pulled out owed 250k! Makes me wonder how many thousands each guy was getting paid per show. But I wish I could hear Keith elaborate more on this. If it was just the merchandise royalties, I think Rollins pulled the right move. Think about it. It's almost 2021. How many more people/ kids are going to be buying Black Flag merch? Maybe a few here and there, but not enough to bother.20 years ago sure. But now? Also does anyone think Ginn would have paid out what Keith was looking for? Or that it was time to let go of the Flag and just keep going with something new( which Rollins is all about apparently). Dukowski wanted to make music again, but Henry was against it because to him it's living in the past. Lawsuits are a pain on both sides. I would assume Henry thought," this is one less thing I have to put on my plate, and that I should just cut my losses and take whatever is offered and be done with it." Even if royalties were awarded in their favor, they may have never seen it, or it would have taken years to see anything. Maybe what Keith was expecting was beyond the realm of actually seeing that amount from Ginn, and Rollins knew it. Not trying to go to bat for Rollins, just being practical in my assuming. Maybe this was more of a moral thing Keith was willing to drag out years. I'm obviously speculating, but would have liked to hear him elaborate. Guess I gotta read the next book( last one was awesome btw(
Keith offers very interesting conversations... An I agree with Keith in some many things... "Give'm enough rope" is too my favourite Clash album by far. Great sound, amazing songwriting and arranging... They had done the punk sounding album by then, so it was time to move on.
NASA definitely wasn't started by an SS soldier,it was Eisenhower. They did employ a lot of em after ww2 tho. Werner Von Braun is who I'm guessing your speaking about
Enjoy your shackles courtesy of the new world order you absolute dope. Theres a fucking coup coming. Keith Morris is such a forward thinking person. He wrote so many songs about the harsh realities of the world. We are experiencing them at an all time high right now.
