Wow. That was great. Earlier today, or yesterday, I watched another interview with G.E., and he told the Dylan audition story. I absolutely got the impression that he and T-Bone had flown to THE STATE of Montana, and play "Pretty Polly-o." not a studio uptown. Great stories!
G.E. is the real deal and I could have listened to you guys talk forever. This is probably the best interview that I have seen of an icon musician. Probably helped that you were toasted, but I'm so glad that this interview exists.
Does G.E. Smith have his own podcast? If he doesn't, he should. He's one of my favourite storytellers. I love his interviews and how he's bumped shoulders with just about every one of my musical idols. And another stellar instalment of your podcast, Joseph Arthur. Looking forward to hearing more.
2 Guitarists are responsible for me switching from Drums to Guitar. One is Joe Walsh. The other, because I was (and still am) a Daryl Hall John Oates freak - is G.E. Smith. G.E. is not only a phenomenal player, but any time you get a chance to hear him tell stories or talk gear - you have no choice but to give him your full attention because he's so interesting! And he's an encyclopedia when it comes to knowledge on gear!
Thats weird because I never really noticed Hall and Oates as a guitar band, I kind of always hated them. LOVE spells love or some kind of crap like that. But I'm imagining this guy running for president. "Inflation is up Mr. President..."chill out, we just legalize more of it and it'll all be good". I think he's a little too humble on his playing, his emmy interview he's like "I'm not that good". Dude, you've been in love with and played guitar since you were four, not only are you good, you goddam well BETTER be good:) What he really helped me do is expand my listening to folk tunes like pretty peggio. After that interview I think a lot of people went looking for that. And it made me look around here, because it turns out my province has a HUGE history of folk music that I didn't even know about thanks to 'AM radio'. OK, some of it is pretty bad, but the good thing is there's the music, then' there's the song. I've got a three string cigar box box guitar, I think thats the most I'll ever master. Ha ha, sorry, the most I'll ever 'play tolerably', ok ok, strum along and sing to. I kind of always hated the electric guitar, it seemed like a lazy players way of 'relaxing' with reverb and limited chords, but when you hear people who are GOOD at it, thats another thing. And when he said he liked the Replacements, well, come on. If you don't like the replacements MUSIC you have to like the Replacements. We have a canadian band called Rheostatics who have a song where they sing "Someone said we sounded like the Replacments, but we'll never be the Beatles or Birds, someone said we should have stayed in the basement, instead of littering our noise on this earth".
G.E Smith-the definition of a sideman. Scrappy ‘can play ANYTHING ’ and a gentleman all rolled up in one. Makes everyone sound better. More G.E, please!
Wonderful conversation! I could listen to GE all day. --- I was a little bummed that GE got side-tracked when he was about to discuss 'song writing process' at 25:00 , during the Bowie section. I REALLY wanted to hear what he had to say about that.
Everything is subjective, but IMHO, ive seen high school kids play guitar better than Keith Richards. Among pickers, i dont hear him name dropped up there with the greats.
@@davidholden4543 there’s two kind of guitarists. gawky socially awkward white guys that treat music as an athletic competition, and musicians that understand music is an ART. The later includes every successful band/artist that have made a cultural impact. I’m a guitarist myself and I have no respect for people that are obsessed with playing fast and precise. Those are afterall only two qualities that can be good or bad depending on the context, as slow and sloppy can be equal. Keith Richards is better than those high school kids for many reasons, first of all he has written so many amazing songs and riffs that have reached millions of people, something none of those kids will ever do. Secondly, keith has a couple of styles he developed that he is a master of. He plays chuck berry better than chuck berry. He also has an incredible robert johnson fingerstyle mode of playing that is better than anything woodyman, grossnan, or recent “finger picker” I ever heard. It is infectious, danceble, funky, and sinister sounding. Hes yet to record it but ive heard him play and its amazing. Not to mention his staples like open g tuning on a fender. Music is self expression and the creation of the beautiful, anything else is secondary.
great interview, at first I wasn't vibing with the host but by the time you played your song with GE I was a fan and loved that rendition, great voice, great song, never heard of you or the song before but gonna check out some more of your music now! also I could listen to GE talk all day, crazy he didn't take a basquiat !!
What a great interview. G.E. is an absolute pleasure to listen to with some great stories. You need to get Bobby Whitlock on your show. The man has some amazing stories! A great story teller, much like G.E. 🤘
yes, i have to agree, he's doesnt seem mature or worldwise enough to talk with legends, he may learn & get there, i dunno...im having a hard time getting THRU this, the interviewer is like a teenager in the background when your trying to hear something..
We used to play a parody bluegrass song set to the melody of “your mama dont dance and your daddy hates rock and roll” as “Your mama dont clog and your daddy hates Bill Monroe.” Fan favorite!

Hey Joseph, I've noticed that on the slate that says "listen, stream, download," download is misspelled on this episodes and all previous ones where that slate is used. Just thought I'd let you know
Joseph Arthur.....just found it and listened. I’m always late to the party of discovering talent songwriters. It’s a nice thing. 20 years late to discover you, and it’s like a good treat. Excellent song my man. Really really good. LOVE the podcast too. Shannon Hoon is in my top two favorite from men. Him and Axl. That podcast with Christopher and Rogers was gold. Looking forward to “All I Can Say”. Thanks for great content.
I listened to Jesse Pestos interview and when G.E. was asked two questions in the end I was dismayed. One was: Do you have any advice for young musical wannabees? His answer was like: Do something else! The other was: Do you have any regrets? His answer was: I regret everything. As much as I like the man, I found that very sad.
This was Jan 2020. He was dropped by everyone from his label to his manager for speaking out against lockdowns and the ‘medication’. There were literally only a handful of people who spoke out and they all were cancelled. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Four years later, and excess deaths are spiralling. Some will learn a very tough lesson for selling out. God bless him.
How does a musician never hear of 'Bill Monroe' and Elvis covering 'Blue Moon over Kentucky'..? Maybe its a generational thing.Joseph Arthur's good rapport with GE Smith
Oh my gosh LOU is one of my favorite records and you are soulful as hell but please please please just take a breath, relax, and let your guest speak. Zero reason for 90% of your interruptions here. Just let the silence work its magic
nothing at all against the Foo Fighters, that’s obviously a great band, but bigger than Nirvana? No way! They are only bigger in a fake commercial way and none of that is real. What’s actual? Nirvana is.
GE is a straight up legend. When you interview him. You show respect, and you listen.
Long live GE Smith, one of the cats.
Great post ! He most definitely is one of the Cats Fo sure !
@@mikelynch7271 he's ah-ite~
He is the definition of a cat. Such a dude.
G.E. Smith is one of the true working man's musicians. The guy has played with so many people in so many styles and settings. Absolute Pro.
GE is such a pleasure to listen to. A musician all about "life" and Happiness! He's a magnet for my attention.
Best ep yet. G.E. Smith is a national fucking treasure.
Thank you so much for the glimpse into the amazing life of G E Smith. Great interview.

Great episode. Thanks for having GE on. Also I love your stuff. I’m a thrash metal guitarist by trade however, I’m happy to find new stuff.
