CLEAR BRIEF EXPLANATION. MUCH THANKS
Appreciate the feedback man! You're very welcome
This is really cool! I hadn’t heard of this... it looks like it has some great features. Is it just for video or photography too? Great video D. You need to make more!! 👍👍
The shinobi is totally awesome, isnt it?!
The only difference between this and the ninja is that this one doesn't record and is very lightweight plastic. Perfect for adding to especially video rigs but can absolutely be used for photography too!!
Thanks Rachel, I will definitely try and keep up on it, I super enjoyed making this one!
1)can u rearrange the icons?
2)can u hide the icons u don't wanna use or see at the bottom?
3) is the left yellow button, minimal view, customizable? ex to hide audio meters completely and swap waveform with histogram lets say?
4) can i make all the icons disappear when I either playback or record? thanks
Sorry for the insane delay - I dont believe you can re-arrange the icons or hide ones you don't want to see.
I also dont think any buttons are customizable on the shinobi but if i recall correctly you can choose which information to display on screen - audio waveforms for histogram, etc.
Just tap the screen to go through the displays or try to start a 'pinch and zoom' movement with two fingers - the icons should go away for a 100% clean screen
Great video! Just ordered one 👍
thanks dude! you'll love it!
By the way this was the best video I've seen going over the controls and I've watched a ton. For a new user it's gold. Thanks. Please answer the question below.
thank you so much! all the kind comments are inspiring me to shoot more content like this!
Your video was way more helpful than the manual! Thanks.
Awesome !! Glad it helped!!
Nice. Big fan of the Shinobi!
thanks! its a pretty awesome little unit isn't it!
Hello,
I have a problem with my Atomos Shinobi and my Sony A7SIII and maybe you can help me :
(Atomos settings with Sony Slog3 Sgammut3.cine - tested with and without this setting)
When I enable the lut (.cube format) on the monitor, the image looks really contrasty and the lights clipping (like if the lut was added 2 times). I recorded a footage correctly exposed from my A7SIII and added the conversion Lut in premiere, it looks good, but not on the Shinobi,
The Gamma assist is not actived on the a7sIII.
Do you have any idea ?
Thank you
I haven't owned the shinobi for quite some time but after looking into it - it sounds like you're having a problem similiar to what seems to now be a solved issue on the ninja's..Check out the links below and it may help you.

Very informative video, thanks for sharing!
thanks for watching! :D
... I want it (great video man)
Thanks my dude!! It's a pretty versatile little device. Great addition to any kit, forreal!!
Thinking about buying this to hook to my ninja 2 recorder for 1080p 30fps but to have all those tools on my f1.2 Canon g30 lense oh yah....!
Good review! How is the Shinobi in sunlight? Can you get away with not using a sunshade? thanks
Aboslutely - the Shinobi has 1000 nits
full HD 5.2 inch IPS (still viewable at extreme angles) touchscreen. with 427 pixels per inch and around 10 stops of dynamic range.
Viewing outside in direct sunlight should be no problem.
Can you playback video on the monitor? I can’t find it anywhere thanks!
yes! just play the video on your camera and it should autoplay on the monitor.
You should make video explaining what each tool does
Appreciate this dude! hit that bell for notifications on future videos! More coming!
nice review. Btw, can it start remote recording? in other words, does it have red record button on the screen you can touch to start recording on your camera. thank you.
thanks!
The shinobi cannot record your camera screen unfortunately.
That is saved for the Atomos Ninja V.
@@donmowatt no, I meant can it at least start recording remotely. Not recording in shinobi but having button on shinobi screen but records in camera sdcard.
Great explanation! Is it possible to hit record start and stop on the monitor?
Thank you!
Recording start and stop must be done from the camera itself.
Great Video! I just purchased the Shinobi for my a73 so I appreciate the run down. I have 2 questions I was hoping you could help with. First I was wondering how you get the monitor to display full screen? every time I use a monitor on my a73 it doesn't utilize the whole screen it has a black box around it . And second, how do you display the image on the monitor and the back of the LCD at the same time? Every time I plug my monitor in my LCD goes to black. How can I correct for that? Thank you in advance. I appreciate videos like this and look forward to more.
will follow up with you asap, when i am reuinted with my monitor XD
@@donmowatt awesome! I really appreciate it
when camera is in 1080p, black bars appear and the back of the camera will go black while the monitor shows the display..
Switching to 4k, now the picture shows up on both back of camera and on monitor. (also in full screen, unless your aspect ratio is messed up on the monitor)
Awesome! Thank you so much!
@@jesserodriguez143 no problem dude, i also made a quick video for you while i was at work. haha.

Hey super random but lift gamma gain refer loosely to shadows mid tones and highlights.
Just getting started with video. Wondering if this is worth the price of upgrade over my lilliput A5?
I used to use a Lilliput a7 for a bit and there is a world of difference between the lilliput and the atomos monitors.
Everything from a brighter more vivid screen to a much more responsive touch screen...less lag, how things like false color and zebras display on the monitor...the whole experience is night and day.
I think the shinobi is absolutely worth the investment/upgrade and will last you such a long time. Go for the ninja if you need the monitor capable of recording aswell.
I'll be reviewing the Ninja V shortly!
@@donmowatt thanks for the info. I'm definitely considering the Ninja since I could technically just use it as a monitor but have the availability to use as a recorder. Sure it's twice the price but Ssd's are way cheaper than SD cards.
Hi, does this monitor work with canon eos m series camera bodies. Thank you 👍
I dont see why not! just get the correct full hdmi to hdmi mini cable and you should be all set to go.
@@donmowatt hi ... 👋 thank you, I bought shinobi 5" sadly there are no connecting cables or mount included however they added power adapter for not much use 🙂, I am happy with quality overall, it works fine but I don't have access to my camera screen and 'Q'uick option 🤏. Thanks again 🤝
nice walkthrough! I also want to use the Shinobi for my A7iii. Have you found any quirks that you dislike using it with the A7iii? Is it ok even if you film in 120 fps or 4k 24 fps?
No quirks, i remember replying on IG. haha.
Yes its ok at 120fps and in 4k/24 aswell.
Hope you've got your hands on one by now my dude!
Don Mowatt I got it! I really like it but I wish I could view the video output full screen but still have my focus square but unfortunately it doesn’t show my focus square when the image is showing full screen 🤬
To bad this thing doesn't have a rule of thirds overlay :/
...was honestly trying to watch but the music was driving me crazy... ...shame because was looking to be a great review video... ...try using background music that doesn't have such a distinctive "beat" to it, background music should be just that, just pleasant sounds/music in the background... Cheers! 😉👍🏻
the music stops at 2minutes, even though i messed up the fade out, haha.
appreciate the feedback though!
@@donmowatt Ah! Thanks for the info! I'll skip to ~2 mins and will enjoy your review... Thanks for sharing! [update] was perfect, you have a pleasant voice you don't need no stinking BG music dude! 😉✌🏻
Does the monitor provide a accurate representation of what the camera is seeing in regards to exposure?
yes its spot on.
Your music is distracting, but nice walk through.
thanks!
'M GOING CRAZY, trying to figure out if my shinobi plays back files for review. In the manual it says it can but I don't think so. Do you know? No where anywhere on youtube or the web can a person find out. I've watch 100 different reviews and tutorials. Dam does this make me mad. Please help. Thanks, Tom
I don't have a shinobi anymore, but..if i recall correctly.. when you click the playback button on your camera - the shinobi will show a little up arrow in the top left - i believe this is telling you to press up on your camera wheel to play the file. left and right to move between files, and down to stop playback.
Hope this works out!
@@donmowatt did you change to a different type of monitor?
Does it get pretty hot in use outdoors?
it gets warm - like any other device, but has an internal fan to help with heat. never had it overheat.
I just bought it and didn’t find rule of thirds grid like my ninja v. Did you figure that out?
I dont own a shinobi anymore but did a search for ya. Update to firmware version 10.3 which added the grid. Super weird it wasnt included originally eh?
@@donmowatt 10.3 is for the ninja v only unfortunately. I have my shinobi updates to latest firmware and no grid under guides tab. I might return this thing lol. Used the ninja today just wish it was light as shinobi
@@martin_wood sorry i meant 10.01 and you can see the grid activated in justin phillips Shinobi firmware features vid - at 6:33
@@donmowatt yeah I have that one. No rule of thirds :( his grid is from his Panasonic camera. My a7s iii doesn’t include grid when showing info on hdmi unfortunately
@@martin_wood I also own the a7siii...what do you mean when showing info? Such as just cycling through the displayed information just on the back of camera? I might be misunderstanding cause i dont have the shinobi to test ..but if i got it right the back of cam grid just doesnt show on the shinobi..
I also own a ninjav but havent used it in a minute so i cant recall the differences either 😅
Does this mean when recording 4k 60 with my camera i cant use this monitor?
That is correct, only up to 4k30 with the Shinobi, and 4k60 with the Ninja V. Also the Shinobi SDI will do 2k DCI at 59.97fps.
how do i mirror my screen from fs7. How do i get my monitor display on shinobi ??! im trying to replace this with my lcd screen. its driving me nuts
I do not own a FS7 but i checked out this ATOMOS video which shows how to connect the Atomos Flame to the FS7, both the Shinobi and the Flame use full size HDMI, so I would assume that this setup to display HDMI to the shinobi, in your case, should be the same.
ua-cam.com/video/haOqCwN6WjQ/v-deo.html
1:14 to 3:00 should get you all setup.
Hope this helps!
@@donmowatt thanks its a great video but nothing about sdi mirroring. only hdmi... so seems to me if i dont want to use my lcd screen i have to use hdmi to mirror my lcd screen....i wanted sdi... why the hell would atomos do this...
@@austinatencio It should be set up in-camera, you need to make sure the FS7 is sending out over SDI and that it is sending the user interface data out to external monitors also, rather than a clean feed which is usually standard practice. Then make sure the Shinobi is set to receive an SDI signal and you should be sorted.
I can certainly be done as I have used that combination many times. Hope you get it figured out.
Why do it get so hot when use in it
😅 it should be fine as long as the fan is working, also operating temps go up to 40c/104f
@@donmowatt thanks
