I had an issue where my LUTS weren't loading because you mentioned only formatting in Ex-FAT. Went to the ATOMOS site where they mentioned it will only work if you format the card in MS-DOS (FAT). Sure enough the latter worked for me.
I've looked at a number of UA-cam videos on LUTs and the Shinobi and this is the only that specifically mentions file structure on the out loading card. I too found that formatting the card in MS-DOS Fat works where EX FAT did NOT work. Thank you making the video and thanks to all the below comments that really helped me fix my issue of LUTs not showing top in file structure
Just a quick (possible) tip on this - I tried 3 different cards of different sizes, with all different formatting options, and couldn't get it to load a LUT UNTIL I took the battery out and went to a/c power.
Just bought this monitor. Thanks for your video. I'm just now messing around with it and so far it seems really great. I have one question. My display doesn't appear to take up the whole glass. hello. I am having a problem with my atomos shinobi. Was wondering if you know weather the shinobi works with only with mirroless cameras . Both on my 5d m2 and my 60 d, once i start to record the screen goes black. It does not let me monitor while recording but it does let me see playback. Is there somewhat of a fix for this or is my cameras just to old for its use??
How do I get the waveform to use its full range? I'm using the Shinobi with a BMPCC6K. When the camera is in Video mode (which I'm not interested in), the maximum exposure displays at 95% rather than 100%; when I set the camera to Film mode (preferred setting), the maximum exposure displays 60% instead of 100%. Any suggestions?
What if I record 4k@60p videos with my camera? Doesn't the Shinobi output any image at all then? Theoretically, the 60p signal would simply have to be output in 30p. Right?

Thanks for this! How do I match Zebras from the camera? I expose 41percent grey card (which I can set in my camera zebras) for s log3 but cannot set this on the Shinobi! It only has 'Threshold' which goes down to 50 percent! Is it not possible?
As most Log recording typically exposes middle gray below 50%, I wish Shinobi's zebras could be set below 50%. The waveform is admittedly a better way for evaluating exposure, but occupies screen space and I often like to see the zebra overlay on dark skin tones. It would also be great to have user definable false color ranges. Sometimes I only want to see 3 or 4 color ranges and define their IRE values. I just bought this monitor as a light weight, non-recording option for my Shogun Inferno. The Inferno is great, but bulky and heavy on a gimbal, and I don't always need external recording. I like the new Atmos interface; they did a great job of packing a lot of controls into a small, intuitive space. It's great to have a nice HD display that is light with long battery life.
Dave Patterson I also with the X-T3’s zebras would go below 50. I only use zebras for highlights on skin tone and for exposing an 18% gray card when shooting.
@@theC47 real photogs don’t need zebras to expose properly. We’ve been getting great exposures before digital anything was around. if you need zebras, histograms and waveforms, you’re a fraud
I own the Atomos ninja 2 full kit got it for 250 bucks. Works great with my canon g30 at 1080p 30p or 23.97 or even 59.94 1080i. I run a 7minch monitor and use the passthru as I got it just for dnxhd 220x for davanci. I edited a test file and imported directly into davanci resolve studio 16 and sweet. It scrubs FAST. Adding color grading and noise reduction the FRAME rates kept at 25 or so playback with noise reduction added. The file is grainy but man O man..... once you add noise reduction it retains its detail! And adding color correction is stays together. Im looking so forward to this new workflow. I run a 7 inch feelworld monitor but this monitor would be friggen awesome. And yes I would love atomos to come out with a 4k version of the star. I was going to buy a ninja start but the cfast system and and ssd hack was too much. So I opted the crappy screen of the ninja 2 and used my bright 7 inch monitor with pass thru . But this monitor without the recorder is on my future buy list!!!
To add one more thing. I would only buy this for the vector scopes. And false color. And zebras and focus peaking. The log is pointless for me. I would be working in a rec709 setting. To see the RGB graph for exposure is the big reason.
I hate that the waveform is omnipresent… if I use the thing for product photos for framing etc. i set good exposure lnce and then would like to have an empty clean screen.

Piotr Hołub Not sure. I would assume that wouldn’t be possible as there is no option to have two different frame rates chosen at one time on the camera.

DO NOT FORMAT FOR exfat.... i tried this many times and it would not work. Atomos website says fat32, which i did and the lut loaded. On windows simply right click and format at fat 32, then copy and paste lut file (.cube) onto card, it can be in a folder or not. doesnt matter. Then your good to go follow the rest of his instructions.

@@pearlmyghty2058 Unfortunately, Atomos doesn't support built in support for BMD cameras but you can load a custom LUT in for that camera from BMB or use LUTs from third parties.
@@martiniustollin what camera were you using and what was it set to? If you were shooting in a standard picture profile then the monitor is going to add the 709 lut OVER your image and it will be over contrasty and saturated. You need to be shooting in something like C-log from the camera and then the monitor will add the rec709 color over it and it will look normal..... does this make sense?

Go into your camera menu and set 3:2 pull down and it will send out 1080p 59.94 I (interlaced) and this should work. I had to set my canon g30 from pulldown 2:2 to 3:2. its the way atomos deals with 60fps. They always default to 59.94I with is 30fps in P
Format the SD card as a fat32 NOT as exfat.... exfat WILL NOT WORK. This was very frustrating. He was wrong in the video, thought my sd cards were bunk or my unit was broken. fat32 works perfectly
if atomos made a 4k ninja star they would be sold out and have trouble keeping stock. Without a monitor their fan noise problem would be fixed. This is why I own atomos ninja 2 . Its silent. My 7 inch monitor is SILENT. Everything is 0 fan noise. My studio lights are SILENT.
I have a Shogun Inferno, which has served me very well, but I wanted a smaller and lighter monitor for gimbal use. I like the interface of the Shinobi, but I'm rather disappointed in the color rendering of the screen. I've tried various, but both Rec709 and V-Log footage look rather horrible on this monitor. The same LUT I use for the Inferno is super dark and RED on the Shinobi. I may invest in the overpriced calibration cable for my Xrite i1 Display monitor and hope this brings the two monitors closer together.
@@martiniustollin I find that some of the display settings actually matched my Shogun Inferno very well, but it was the LUTs that were waaaay off. Regarding latency, that is an issue with the HDMI protocol in general, but the GH4 and GH5 do have more HDMI lag than some other cameras. I am seeing much less latency (4 to 6 frames?) than you with my GH5 and Shinobi, so my guess is that you might try a different HDMI cable. Sorry C47 but i will say to you what I have started to post on all other camera monitor reviewers; Your video means absolutely nothing to me as a novice videographer. I have recently upgraded to a Nikon D810 DSLR and want to get into video. I require a monitor as the camera screen does not move. I went on youtube and found ALL of you reviewers seem to think anyone watching your videos is an experienced videographer familiar with the lexicon of the industry. One example; I can see a waveform. So what the hell do I do with it when I look at it that I cannot do when looking at the picture? What is Rec709 - PQ - LUT - Gamut, etc. Can just one of you vloggers post an introduction for newbees into the lexicon of what you are talking about. Grrrrr!

It depends on your camera. What the camera records as what it outputs over HDMI or SDI don’t necessarily have to be the same.
Have you noticed the difference in latency between hdmi output 4k and output full hd on the screen via x-t3?

Generally a tap in the middle of the screen will give you a clean view. More info in user manual that you can download on atomos.com web site.

oh i gogoled it. on a Mac you got to use the Disk Utility then select MS-DOS(FAT).
I formatted it but it still isn't working. I loaded the luts. but do they need to be in a special file on the SD card?

Can you change the LUT intensity on this? I sometimes want my LUTs around the 70% mark rather than the full 100% look.
No, unfortunately you cannot. But it is still a nice monitor, they also Make a SDi/HDMi for the same price.
