- Yes, the Atomos Shinobi is an amazing monitor with a FHD super bright display. But it also has some CRAZY awesome features that make it SOOO much more than a second screen

This is a full featured professional monitor but with a much smaller profile and lower weight. Having a 2nd screen or a front facing monitor is always great, but having the Atomos Shinobi with histograms, peaking, zoom, scopes, and SOO much more is invaluable for me. If you plan on shooting HDR, log, or with anamorphic lenses, I really think the Shinobi or a Ninja V is a must buy.
**Correction: The Shinobi does NOT have a fan!
Are we sure?! Everyone else is reporting it does but could all be under the same assumption as the rest of us from experience with the Ninja V.
Sure. My contact at Atomos let me know there was no fan. It has vents which is why we were confused
By far the best Atomos Shinobi video on UA-cam. Thanks!
Appreciate that Mart!
I'm planning on buying this. Thank you for the review. 👊🏿
Thanks for reviewing Dan. And thanks for mentioning that the Ninja V has some fan noise. I have the Ninja inferno, and it indeed has fan noise!
Can you see the red frame when you start recording?
I wish they had 7" version too.
Thanks for the review! Was looking for a good short review on this product! Can't wait to get it in the mail! Thanks just sub man! Keep it up! Short and informative!
Thanks Jeff!!! Appreciate that
Good video Dan! I've got the V, this looks awesome for people who don't need the recorder. Atomos make great stuff.
Thanks! Yep, can't go wrong with this stuff. I've found it tough to go back to the camera screen after using this for a few days haha
How can you playback the footage on the Shinobi? I use a Canon 5D IV. Thanks! :)
Does anyone know if this device has a recording indicator? I know it doesn't record, but I have it coupled with a Leica Sl2-S and I can't seem to figure out how to show that the camera is recording and if that's even possible.
Hey! So it's basically just a larger and brighter monitor to the one on the back. Everything is recorded in camera and then OUTPUT to the monitor. No information goes back from the monitor to the camera
It looks like an easy buy for someone who doesn't need/want recording. The NP-550 looks like it's a great size battery for it, and 2 hours is about what the A7III batteries last, so a good match there. It's a disappointment that it doesn't come with an actual battery and only the dummy battery. I'd like to see a better package deal. I would like to see it come with a dedicated mount like the SmallHD Focus an NP-550 and an HDMI cable. I'm curious to see if Atomos releases a package in the future.
How does this compare with the Small HD Focus?
Edit: just saw a response
Thank you! I think 2 hours of monitoring per regular Sony battery is very nice. I'm glad Shinobi's internal fan is quieter than one in Ninja V. And I really like it has the same features like peak, zebra and histogram. As for me, I'm not interested in other features like zoom, "noise" view etc. Also it seems the touch response is pretty fast and I like it. Please tell me what would you suggest to eliminate or greatly reduce the fan noise when you are using Ninja V on the same rig where you have your external mic attached as well? Thanks in advance.
Hi and thanks for the review. How is it dealing with minus temperature grades? Did you have any chance to test it?
I got one 10 days ago and already used on tough shoot in rain under umbrellas - got dripped on quite a bit, no issues and worked fantastic. Totally agree - this monitor is winner in it's price range and higher.
Hey are you still using it, how has your experience been with it? I have the a6400 and am looking at the smallhd focus and the shinobi but I've heard the shinobi has heating problems, also it's sometimes annoying you have to use a specific cord w/small hd.
Very great explanation, I like the lut usage and being able to use an anamorphic lens
Hi, how do you use the monitor with Crane 3 without risking to get the cable tangled with the Crane? it looks like you are limited in mouvements, and maybe imposible to do the vortex mode?
Love this review! Great in depth, I noticed you said you can use the ninja v as just a monitor, and that’s why I’ve held off of it cause I know I’d have to add in extra costs like a good ssd. But I might use the external recording in the future. Do you need an ssd card for the ninja v even if you just want to use it as a monitor? If anyone knows that’d helped a ton!!
this is an incredible deal. i have to add it to my list for sure.
Did you buy one?
I forgot what this video was about because your beard is just majestic af.
Thanks for the great review! So helpful!
can you see both screen (camera and monitor) meanwhile you re recording?
Thanks for the video. i wan monitor and recorder. what is the low price?
can I record on my fx3 DCI and will the atomos shinobi display what I am recording? also if I change the frames from 24 to 59.94, will it display in the monitor?
Thanks for sharing!! I have the same Lab3 gimbal. Do you have trouble with balancing when you have your HDMI cables hooked up and running to the external monitor?
What happens if I input 50/60p into the monitor, is it simply downsampled?
This is PERFECT for me! More affordable and my camera doesn't have a recording limit so this works out well!
I would like an external monitor for still photography with a Nikon Z6. This seems overkill, but stuff like CamRanger appears time consuming for set up, same for Snapbridge. Are there any quality monitors made primarily for non video applications?
We’re using a Sony a7s3 with this monitor and when we hit record there is a 5 second delay where the monitor says no input and goes black but then shows the image. Any tips?!?!
Can I ask what that arm is that is holding the monitor onto the zhiyun craine on your desk? It looks very cool and I have ordered my zhiyun craine and now considering this monitor.
Please do a full review on the Crane 3 LAB!!!
nice video!i want to ask something .You say that you use 2 baterrys .The one gives you 2 hours of using the monitor and the other 4 hours. So the question is what type of battery you use?NP-FP550 OR NP-F770?THANKS
How do I turn the display upside down?
Hello, has the built in option in the menu or setup the mirror flip horizontally option(not rotate), i want the image of the screen has the option of being seen normally but with the letters inverted(like if you look at a normal mirror). Thanks!
u like this monitor more than a small hd 502??? its a must for the price?
Would you recommend this monitor for the blackmagic 6kpro? I’m seeing the feelworld is also a good choice so I’m not sure which to invest in! Thanks!
Is it possible to power the camera off of the monitor battery?
I have a bit of a dumb question but if you could answer it, I would be Greatful. Since this device doesn't record, I take it all the alterations you make on the monitor return back down the HDMI lead and its recorded that way on camera? - OR is it just a larger and brighter monitor than what the camera has on the back? - Peter.
Does a Ninja V sunshade fit this (and is it even necessary?)
Great device. Sold my SmallHD501 for the Shinobi. Really liked the fact, that it can use the better Sony-batteries, great OS with previews for HDR and LUTs on my Sony A7III and the build quality is extraordinary.
Hey how has your experience been with it? I have the a6400 and am looking at that and the shinobi but I've heard the shinobi has heating problems, also it's sometimes annoying you have to use a specific cord w/small hd.
@@JonathanAkosah I had never any problems with it. I use a cheap HDMI-cable from Amazon - everythings fine!
what's that elbow type hdmi to mini hdmi cable? no cable included yet with the shinobi. Thanks!
Yes I’m buying it thanks for this
i have a shinobi, i cant see my camera options on the monitor to watch videos back after ive recordedm man im so confused ! it just sais TV out in progress on my GH5 screen ?
What is the mini tripod with the octopus legs on the right on the Sony
?
Can you use the Shinobe if I am filming in hd 1080? or does it need a 4k signal?
Yep, absolutely as long as you are not shooting 1080@120fps
HeyI Dan !
Thank you so much for all your great & positive reviews !!ü
I really love them and your cool genuine & honest style !
Hugs from Europe from a X trained pro photographer.
Best, Mike
PS: could you / someone please let me know what connection braket is being used to attach the monitor with the gimbal ?
Thanks so much!!! That arm was made by Aputure although Smallrig makes one as well
Hi what hdmi micro are you using? Can i use it for sony a6400?
Thanks good review and explanation
I need to he able to see the "recording" indicador on the monitor. Is that possible?
how do i mirror my screen from fs7. How do i get my monitor display on shinobi ??! im trying to replace this with my lcd screen.
I've been seeing this monitor pop up all over the place - lots of ppl making videos about it too recently
for sony camera with an s cinetone profile do u know which gamma and gamut we are supposed to choose? 3:20
Hi, can you tell me if atomos shinobi 5" works fine with canon eos m5 and m6. Thanks alot 🙂
I know this video is old but I’m looking at this monitor for a z5. Thus I am not monitoring log. Can I just have it display what I see on the camera?
thanks dude absolutely awesome
Does it save time on color grading
Can it not take 4k60p from the GH5?
Did u fibd out?
Hey Dan, what are you using to mount the monitor onto the Crane 3? I've got an arm, but I feel like it constricts my motion. Your setup looks better than mine.
Hey, using this: amzn.to/2XCQPso
can we playback the footages on that shinobi ? or shinobi 7 ?
Hi dan, can we record nlog with the shinobi?
Small question though, even though it says its limited to 4k30fps. Will I still be able to record say 4k60 or 4k120, and just have it monitored/playback as 4k30, similar to how the camera lcd does?
Your assumption is correct
Thanks for the review! A short question: Do you know about an accessory where you can switch the monitor from filming to vlogging mode within a few seconds? I am looking for something similar to the FocusHD hinge but until now I did not find anything on the interweb. Would be great if somebody has seen such an accessory! :)
Thanks! That's definitely a cool idea but I honestly don't know anything like that now
Is the color shown on the Atomos Shinobi is the output as well. Or it's different when taken to the program like premiere pro
The colors shown on the Shinobi will be accurate so no worries there
Can you capture video of PS4 , switch and Xbox ?
Hi Dan, I just discovered your channel. I'm a little late in the game as far getting an on camera monitor. I am studying hard and liking this one a lot and it's the leading choice so far. Since it's over 2 years old I wanted to ask you is there something newer and perhaps better. I mean is there a newer model or game changer. I'm looking at the Andycine 6" which claims to be 2600 nit. Is that possible. I know this one is only 1000. Please let me know what you think. I use a GH5 and don't need my monitor to record anything. looking forward.
Hey! So this is still one of the better monitors on the market. The weakness is that it doesn't have an hdmi output and can't push 120fps or faster which the gh5 can shoot but honestly I don't think anything else even close to this price can do 120fps. I've never had a problem with the brightness on the Shinobi either
hey dan, can i monitor 120fps 1080p on the atomos shonibi?
You cannot. I actually don't know any monitor that works at 120fps
@@learningcameras did it on the neewer f100, just has a 3 second delay to show
How does it compare to the 7” Feelworld for $260 ? That screen is 2200 nits and many other options except I believe waveform
Troy Phillips hey bro I have the feelworld 7inch can I input logs in there so I can see what I’m exposing in log ?
Does anyone know if using the RSC2 to control the Sony a7c prevents the Atomos Shinobi from monitoring? I have my RSC setup with the included cable from Ronin into my Sony a7c to control ISO and Rec. When I plug in the Atomos Shinobi, I don't get any picture. The second I unplug the cord from the RSC2, picture comes back to the Shinobi. Wondering if I have a setting wrong? Any advice would be awesome! Thanks!!

Interesting note. Sold to you/advertised as a 10bit monitor, while it uses a 8bit panel.
It does '8bit + frc' which is what most non hyper expensive desktop monitors do. These desktop monitors do not have hdr capabilities but do claim to.
Which makes me wonder if the shinobi is actually offering HDR or not.
Can I view DCI 4K on Shinobi through HDMI?
Great vid Dan. Do you still recommend this today? I’d like to get one for my GH5 since I have trouble pulling focus on the camera alone.
I do still use this today. I've had a few people say it's not as color accurate as they like but I also have a Ninja V for external recording so I like that my Shinobi matches that well
Ninja V is more color accurate than Shinobi ?
Great info. Thank you
Is the Shinobi being powered by the camera with the HDMI cable as well?
No, power comes from a battery mounted on the Shinobi
can u record n log on atomos shinobi?
anyone know if I can I go Fotga Power Adapter(for Nikon D850) > dc power splitter(the Fotga has one output) >> dummy battery(in D850) / a Relay Camera Coupler for Sony NP-F(in Atomos Shinobi monitor)?
Hello Dan, I would like to know if I could link one more display (external/ Hdmi out) from the Atomos Shinobi? So the director could see the frames who’ll be sitting afar.
I am using bmpcc4k.
No, there is no hdmi output on the Shinobi
Good Review,¿My Question Here Is Atomos Shinobi-Monitor, Can It Do A Recording. Like Blackmagic Design Video Asist - Monitor? Pls If You Have Any Idea Pls Make A Coment Thanks
How to video playback on Shinobi using z6ii?
So it says N-log on the Shinobi, but isn't N-log available only when it's being recorded out to an external recorder like the Ninja V? What happens when you attach the Shinobi? Does that make N-log available and does it record into the XQD as N-log? I mean the obvious question being why let us look at N-log on the screen if it's not being recorded in N-log.
Leandro Ngo hey not sure if this helps but I believe it’s just there to let you know what profile and colour space you are recording at and not actually a lut
Hey. Great video. Does the screen show a recording indicator.
Sadly not.
No udapte for this now ?
Can I monitor 1080p 120 frames on this monitor? Or 4k 60p ? On the specs of the atomos side these are not listed.
that is my concern too. It seems it does not support 1080 120p in the spec.
I heard that if you record 4K 60fps, the playback will be at 30 fps
Hello, can u provide a link to the ballhead / arm you’re using to connect the Shinobi to the side of the Crane? Thx!
Yep! This one: amzn.to/2XhmkrN
They also make a longer 11" version
where is the rj45 port for?
could shinobi play back footage? or just playback on the camera and the shinobi will live streaming the playback?? thank you
it can
Great Video Dan. What hdmi cable do you recommend that does not affect the balance and stability of the gimbal? In my case I have the weebill
Thanks! I highly recommend these: bhpho.to/3fgPwdA
The 17" version is usually perfect for this setup
@@learningcameras thanks so much, I go for it
Awesome video! I have a quick question though. Can you record 10 bit N log with the Shinobi?
The Shinobi is just a monitor, you will need to use this recorder to record 10bit log: bhpho.to/2PIiW6G
@@learningcameras Thank you!
hello, i have a problem. i connect the 7iii with the atomos shinobi and i see the live pic. if i put the REC button the liveview is for 5 sec switch off. i cant see anything. not on the 7iii or on the external monitor. how can i fix this?
Have you checked your HDMI-settings on the A7III?
Hi Dan. Do you know if it possible to playback a video from the camera on the Shinobi...Going crazy:-) I have a Panasonic GH 5. Ordinary photo is ok to see on the Shinobi. But I can't playback my video on the screen...I get the message on my Panasonic GH5 "TV Output in Progress" //All the best from Sweden
It should be. I don't have the GH5 anymore to check but I'd imagine it's a bad HDMI output setting because you should be able to playback
can you record 10bit with the shinobi? please answer been deciding which to buy
This is actually just a monitor...no recording. You would want the Atomos Ninja V for 10bit recording
I just paid $299 for this. Saved the tax with the PayBoo card @ N&H, so $299 w/free shipping. The Ninja V is $649 +/-, but you have to buy an SSD drive, cables, connector, etc, so the price jumps to $1200 if you want a 1TB SSD. That's a significant price bump! I'd really like the recording function of the Ninja V to get the 10 bit functionality for my EOS R, but honestly, I don't need that, and the fact that I can load LUTs and see EXACTLY what my sensor is seeing while recording on-camera, this is all I need. Even with the SICK flip-out screen on my camera, this thing blows it away!
Things like split-screen viewing of LUTs on screen make it awesome, balanced battery placement and lighter overall weight for on-camera work... Hands down a great monitor!
I thought the monitor was suppose to reflect what u see in camera. Like when I was filming myself today for a audition i couldn't see if I was actually recording unless i got behind the camera to rec activated. The monitor just showed me...me and my framing lol. I also bought this thing a week ago
Hey man, how do you charge the Atmos? Do you need a seperat charger for the battery?
It uses Sony FP batteries so you charge the battery itself. There is no internal battery on this unit
I own a SonyA6500 mosty shoot in 1080p very minimal 4k due to rolling shutter. Whats the benefit of Having a Monitor/Recorder for my A6500 VS just Having a Monitor? Whats the difference pressing record on my Camera VS pressing record on my monitor?
Great question. For that setup, there is little reason to buy a recorder. It will allow you to record longer than 30min (if the camera doesn't overheat) and you can record in HQ Pro Res but that's about it and it has some upsides and downsides. There are plenty of reasons to buy this Shinobi monitor though. The A6500 screen was pretty weak and got even dimmer in 4k so this will remain bright enough to see in full daylight. Plus you get features like Slog or HLG preview luts when recording using those profiles and other features to help analyze the footage. In addition you get a larger 5.2" high resolution screen which is way better than the smaller monitor on that camera
how do you have your lights set up fo this video?
I have a key light camera left and a reflector camera right. There is also a light hitting my back and another hitting the background so 3 lights in all + a reflector
My atomos shinobi screen gets rly hot after working around 15mins. Is it just me?
+does it have standard gridlines(for example rule of thirds)?
Thanks for taking the time to respond 😋
I have the same issue, were you able to find what is causing it.
Tharshan Thirucelvam sorry nope
Hello, I just bought this one, with a HDMI cable but I have a little latency which disturb me. Do you have any advices to buy the good hdmi cable ? Thank you !
My favorite cables are ZILR and Kondor blue
@@learningcameras thank you !
Is Shinobi worth it if you do mostly photography?
No, I prefer just using a viewfinder if the screen isn't bright enough
Good day Atomos! Please tell me whether it is possible to disable this distracting white frame at crop 2.35 or 2.4?
ua-cam.com/video/9a1oYRakjhk/v-deo.html
So that only blackout is left above and below, because the white frame makes it difficult to shoting.
Very grateful for the answer
!
Is it really worth the money compared to the Ninja V? I'm considerung to pay 300 bucks more to get even more functionality. What do you think?
Depends on the camera you own. If you have a camera that benefits from external recording, I would consider getting the Ninja V unless weight or fan noise are big issues
where did you get that articulating arm for the Zhiyun Crane 3 Lab?
Hey, using this: amzn.to/2XCQPso
