After the coronation of King Charles, doors opened for me. My grandmother sang Dank sei dir Herr in church, but also at home while doing the dishes. She had a powerful voice. I will never forget when she said to me: There is no greater thing than to sing for the Lord. ❤️

One of my favourite baritones, for his clarity of diction, emotional communication and almost invisible immaculate technique.

I completely agree... I have been looking for a long time on UA-cam for a performance of this part of the requiem that would satisfy me... it turned out to be perfect))

i think it might be recording technique issue, but the baritone and choir and orchestra all sound quite distant. compare these versions where baritone sounds very near.

Do any of these people realise what they're singing?
Deliver me, o Lord, from everlasting death
    on that dreadful day
when the heavens and the earth shall be moved
when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire
It sounded like someone asking to borrow his neighbour's lawnmower.

want you to say that death metal would be better here?

xbe1971. Very seldom does a composer get deeper into the soul of these words than does Gabriel Fauré in his Requiem. aAd to that the superb , nuanced, conducting, playing and singing in this rendition, and all you are doing is showing yourself up as a gross Philistine trying to be a smart arse.

libera me depends a lot on the baritone for the starting atmosphere.
requiem is requiem, some one is deceased and the family, relatives and friends have gathered to think about the beloved and pray for the deceased ...
so there would be naturally bitterness and deep sorrow of loss.
and to hear the baritone singing the opening " libera me(deliver me)" as if praying, praying with such intense desperate anguish...
faure was a great composer and surely he would have his reasons for giving this lyric baritone part when he composed. so it would be the best to linterpret the piece with the background in mind.
i think faure set specifically baritone for this part. it had to be grave and heavily bitter and yet with restrained grief....
i would imagine a father who sheds tears over his only son's death, the father's grief is so heavy that he cannot cry out loud, but choking with tears. a son who died an honorable death, saving others with his own life as the price..
but what about the father's pain? it is such a tragedy for the father...
i often think of the biblical message as i listen to this song, that God has sent his only son Jesus to save all people, to pay for the debt of sins with his life and blood.
requiem is highly religulious piece, and you couldn't say someone is arrogant to look for religious interpretation for such piece.

explain that pls. It sounds like it's supposed to sound. Sombre, but ultimately uplifting in a sort of cathartic way. It make me wonder what you are doing when you ask your neighbour to borrow his lawnmower
