Avoid These Armbar Mistakes from Mount ( Don't Flop! )

  • In this video I show 3 simple BJJ Armbar tweaks and adjustments to help you so you don't flop off and lose your position when going for an Armbar from Mount.
I know the problem well. I had it a lot as a BJJ White Belt and I've seen many of my students experience it.
You're in Mount. Everything is going well. You're in one of the best positions in BJJ and you're feeling dominant.
    Then. . .
You go for the Armbar and you lose everything!
This is one of the more frustrating issues that happens in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
And this is the exact problem our buddy Mike is having.
He says that he is able to get to Mount. But every time he goes for the Armbar he loses the position.
Mike is a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
So I've included in this video 3 of my favorite Armbar adjustments and tips that I've used and helped so many White Belts with.
I hope they're helpful to you if you're experiencing this problem.
    Thanks for watching!

Just started my Jiu Jitsu journey at age 52 and needless to say the first few months were intimidating. However I find your channel an excellent source for easy to understand training methods. You have a great thing going, so please keep pumping out the material. P.S. Restock your rash guards so that I can purchase a few!

I love that you do these! don't know what you get out of it because it looks like a ton of work, but I really appreciate the help! Already used your Kimura finish video and have learned a ton overall, even from the ones where you just talk (some of my favorites). Just thanks! PS - I watched my professor teach my kid the armbar from s-mount, and he stressed the "butt-to-shoulder on the landing" space as a key, I think that helped them.. and me.

Great advice. Thank you. I have a hard time finishing the arm bar in no gi when I have closed guard. I moved the arm across my body, use my knee to block the arm escape, use my leg to break the posture, bring the other leg over the head close to the face staying tight... But people always seem to be able to pull their arm out. My professors have told me keep the posture broken with head control, keeps my knees tighter, all great advise, I just can’t seem to make it work. Any advise??

Isn't it also much more dangerous for your training partner if you just fall back into an armbar without control? Seems like if you've got a tight grip, heals dug in and knees together you could potentially break the arm right when falling back with such uncontrollable force. I am being taught by my instructor to apply joint locks slowly but go after chokes fast and with more vigor. What do you think Chewy?
    Thanks for another great video!

Christian Moniz im not Chewy but last night we worked an arm bar in class and the black belt I was partnered with said exactly that. Partly it's so that we don't hurt our training partners but it's also so that we can get proper control and position before attempting the finish.

This philosophy is applied in class by taking the precaution so u don’t hurt anyone but in tournament outside of class you go fast and aggressive on submition👍🏼flopping allows them space to get out so you wanted to stay tight for more pressure and a faster tap

i also tend to flex my knees so that im pulling my partner toward me while simultaneously pinching the knees. is this largely unnecessary? feels like it helps tighten everything down, but maybe ill experiment with not doing it ... i am stronger than i am fit and need to conserve energy everywhere i can!
