Mappa - Ever thought of buying a twin electric blanket to use to warm up the wood? Might take a bit more prep afterwards but you might be able to get the wood a good bit warmer.

This might be a good idea until you have to deal with the lint/dust/dirt left behind by the electric blankets, especially after they have been used for a while. The cleaning process would need to be quite rigorous. I would recommend buying heated rubber mats that are used in many industries for heating items. The rubber mats won't leave behind dust/dirt/lint and are easily cleaned if they become dirty and some offer temperature controls which would give you better process control to heat a thick slab.

@@Le_Comte_de_Monte_Felin I was just about to say to buy a second blanket to put under the wood but your idea is better. It might be possible to save a pour that is overheating a little by using the tubing to cool the pour, or at least know when you are getting too close to the limit on exotherm...

I am not a woodworker, I am just somebody that came across your videos. I need to say this though - I love the fact that you're leaving your mistakes in there! This is as valuable as the successes you show. Since everybody makes mistakes all the time, if you watch somebody else just "get it right" all the time, subconsciously you start to think there's something wrong with you.
Posting your mistakes makes your videos feel normal. You should be proud.

I’m 36 and I’ve been an automotive painter for 16 years in a fairly high flow shop. The trizac system works extremely well. I’ve seen the paper go up as high as p5000 grit. Once you’re at that point, the buffing and polishing portion is ridiculously easy. I absolutely love this table. Keep up the amazing work dude

MAPPA Burl- I hope you know how blessed you are to be able to create and have an outlet for your passion and creativity…I absolutely love my family and work 13 hours a day 6 days a week locked into a factory job-concrete, cold steel, deafening robotic noise, horrible air quality, no windows no sun, hot as hell…but the point is I’m stuck and daydream about apprenticing at your shop..I’d work for free. All I’ve ever wanted to do was be a carpenter and build modern furniture…I used to draw tables, chairs and couches back in 1995…But I know at this point it’s just a dream.

I refinish furniture and my buffing to a high gloss needed work when I first started. I have learned a little trick though. Set up a couple of shop lights at waist height or about chair rail height with them facing out and turn your overhead lights off. It is what a lot of automotive painters do and it gives an excellent contrast on the levelness and shows any dips, debris that might have landed on it and swirls from the pads.
This and be sure you can see the light itself in the reflection. That really brings out the imperfections. Another tip is use LED’s and not fluorescent or halogen. It’s a “cleaner” light that again helps to see those imperfections.
I love how detailed you are, that's the difference between good and not so good of a job. Very professional and sincere about the work you do. Best wishes.

Mappa 13:55 The best way to heat the surface of your slab (and the epoxy on the slab) is to use a radiant heat panel. A 400 Watt panel should do your application (24"x 24"). You would suspend it directly above your slab (3 or 4 feet above). Plugs into 120VAC. No moving parts so no air movement. Home Despot $250 Love the table.

When finishing the surfaces, you should consider what a “clean room” in the semiconductor industry puts to use, as far as what attire you wear, to prevent dust and other particles from your body and clothing from being shed onto the work piece.
MAPPA, so glad I watched this. Been doing some little wood working projects and watching you use the nylon brushes and your experience with them helps me out a lot. Cant wait to try using them and see if they work like they did in this video.

I love your video's! I'm now in my finals of the year (college) and when I study, I prefer something to listen too, at least sometimes. 3 days ago I found your channel and love it, I am not even that interested in wood but it's just nice to hear about someone else his passion.

When this table was around 1500 grit sanded, I loved it. But the final shine is unbelievable. I don't even like glossy finish in general, but this job is really nice ;)
Buffing doesn’t always come out that nice. It might sound crazy, but i have some sanding discs from rocker that go down to 12000 grit which I use before I start buffing guitars out and it helps get rid of that haze so you don’t have to go through a ton of buffing compounds. Those things are super expensive!

I mostly work with car finishes. Once you get above 2-3K grit sanding, compounds will work just fine. IMO it depends on what you are better at sanding vs buffing. Also the risk of overheating the clear with the buffing compounds. I'm like you and lean to a better final sanded surface vs cutting it with compounds.

I’m in Alaska and just about to begin clearing out and prepping my shop to build my first table, desk, benches, etc. from some oak that I cut in ‘21 from tree and milled when I was stuck during the pandemic down there in Missouri. A 6000 mile trip hauling it up here that ended up costing me $12,000, and now I’m finally going to be able to make some furniture. I enjoy your videos.

This table show the depth of passion you have for your craft and art! It is hard to believe by the end that this table is, in fact made out of wood, not some exotic kind of stone! The exquisite level of work and craftsmanship you put into this and everything you have done so far that I have seen is truly impressive.
I do have a question though; so far from scrolling through your videos I can only see that you work with slabs of wood, I. E. Tables and desks, have you ever explored the idea or possibility of using an entire trunk of wood to create something? A close friend of mine just south of you near Lebanon always seems to have large trunks of wood which is what gave me my idea some years back…

I haven't seen ALL your videos/tables, but this one is my favorite. I definitely prefer this ebonized burl finish over the burnt wood tables. Nice job
For filling those little burl holes, look into the epoxy putty by mohawk, I've been using it for the micro imperfections lately and haven't had any issues! Love the video as always cam

@mikea hiooi get a dead tree from a storm, let it dry for a bit, take it to a woodyard willing to cut it into slabs for you, then dry them out further till they are not going to keep warping anymore
Often after a storm, or when a tree is dying, people want the tree taken away,
and some have to pay someone to do it.
so talking to local farmers, council workers that do the landscaping, or contractors who maintain gardens and landscapes for other people/companies.
they are bound to have a tree or stump they don't want.
but it will take a bit of leg work, a bit of getting to know people, and setting up that repour , and really some luck as well.
but of course, it means your putting time and patience into setting things up so people know your looking for it, and the running around, because you want to keep reminding them.
but you might have to rent a trailer, and other tools, or hire someone who has them,
so finding something free, may cost you more then just paying for it.
but keep the local timberyards in your favourites, and spend time online keeping an eye on things, and visiting them, so again, they know who you are, and that your trying to save some money.
a couple of years ago, [I am in Australia though] a friend found that there was a lot of wood from storms, and some power poles. that were basically on the side of the road, so anyone could come and use a chainsaw to trim the branches and load it on a trailer.

I would love to see a test video for the ceramic coating. maybe make two little cutting board sized chunks of wood, finished with epoxy, and one has the ceramic coating on, while the other doesnt. after a couple tests, I'd like to see how well the ceramic coating actually protects the resin finish

I just hope that when I start my business that my work can be anywhere as perfect as your work...
