I saw Brecker play one of his weirdest shows in 1987. It was at a Japanese Restaurant/Jazz Club called Yoshis in Berkeley, CA. He played half the show on a Yamaha EWEE midi Saxophone controller. He was so far ahead of his time playing a one man show by triggering loop tracks he created live on stage to play along to. It was an amazing performance.
I saw Michael Brecker, in the Brecker Brothers band, in the North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague, Netherlands, back in 1980, and he was already using electronics in a brilliant way at the time. The concert was filmed live and parts of it can be found on UA-cam.

Would have loved to been there. I was lucky enough to see Michael a few times in Toronto over the years.
Завидую всем, кто видел его и слышал его игру...
Every time I hear a Brecker solo I feel short of breath. He was the greatest! And fortunately I have seen it many times. With this formation a few days before at Umbria Jazz. 5 amazing musicians
Jeff Andrews is perhaps the least known and most underrated bassist. What a genius he was. May he rest in peace.
Phenomenal gig man. Probably together with Chick Coreas Blue Note Tokyo 1992 the most intense gigs.
Agreed on both points. I understand he is probably the least known on the video, but I am surprised there is so little love for him on this thread. He's playing great on this gig (as always...). A very talented musician. R.I.P.
Definitely not underrated by me or my collegues bassists. I rate his solo's as the highest in storytelling; I saw him play live a couple of times I am happy to say. He is much missed indeed.
The best group I ever seen.
Joey, Adam, Jeff, Mike... Michael..
One of the greatest saxophonists of all time !!! Great MB
Peanuts Francavilla THE GREATEST!
Iam just wondering who would be better
Probably the Greatest to be honest..
Was at this concert. They killed everyone that day I'll tell ya! Was an electric, unforgettable time to see them live that day:) RIP
I don't know if iam the only one ,but when I listen to him play I get goose bumps and happy tears all in one. This dude is just so good. Iam so glad 8 got to see him live before his passing
no sir you are not alone.. trust me
You are not alone Michael greatest
same
Absolutely same here. I was listening to a Chaka Kahn tune with a Brecker solo in the out chorus and started to weep. Also listening to a Vince Mendoza thing. Pushed me over the edge.
"We're gonna go ahead and slow things down now..."
*proceeds to shred 32nd notes
Logan Moore More like 64ths and 128ths... lol
LOL....right?
Love Brecker’s smile when Mike Stern is ripping on Nothing Personal and Upside Downside
I never realized how WEATHER REPORT influenced UPSIDE DOWNSIDE is. Great stuff!
Michael......God bless you sir.....Genius
I feel ya. He was unreal
"We are going to slow things down..."He says, and then starts the intro in sixty-fourth notes...UNIQUE
I thought the same thing. There is 0% Johnny Hodges or Paul Desmond in this man's approach :) !! Keeping the Coltrane fires burning, even on the jazz ballad.
Saw this great band in Copenhagen, Denmark in `89. Truly great! Calderazzo really shone.
The piano solo at 48:40 is insane. Talk about being in the zone..omg
Brecker's EWI solo on Upside Downside wins the internet. The whole band is killing it, Nussbaum is CRUSHING. Thank you SO much for posting this, Newport Jazz people. This is a giant contribution.
Hallo8
I have started a transcription of it. It's insane.
@@TheGosteen Did you finish it?? thats insane haha
@@AlecC0l I have half of it ! Need to get back on it I stopped.... But it's insane indeed.
K i3
I wish i could double-thumb this up
Happy Heavenly Birthday, Maestrissimo Michael Brecker!!! Memory and Music Eternal!!! 💖 And WHAT a flanflippingtastic band!!!
Mpravo,ston,maeke,strem,❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂❤😂❤❤
I remember delighting in Brecker's EWI of course..but Mike Stern is who really killed me on this one..
..and God how we miss you Mr. Brecker.
Love hearing Song For Barry licks before Song For Barry was born..
This is just insane. Three of my favorites: Brecker, Calderazzo and Stern. I am lucky enough to have seen them all live, but this concert would have been awesome to attend. I also love the joy they all seem to have...
+Steve Marchbank Also, I'm glad Joey wasn't wearing that outfit the times I've seen him. :)
você disse tudo, penso igual você
That guitar solo in the beginning was just incredible. I haven't listened to a lot of jazz guitar, but I still thought that guitarist was amazing.
Mike Stern
Eyes wide open! Ears too....
Mike stern getting high from breckers solo
And Brecker clearly enjoying Sterns solo, a little later.
Adam is such a great drummer.
Even though he played great drums for Brecker and Co, Louis CK realised that the money was in stand up comedy.
Wow did not know that
saxplayer59 not true saxplayer59, was just having a laugh. Seriously, how much does Nussbaum look like Louis CK?
+40frankied40 Before I read your comment I was thinking the same thing!
really? is that why i like louie?
Especially in this video, I think Adam Nussbaum could be a twin of PBA legend Guppy Troup (how he looked in the 80s). Nowadays, most people know Guppy as father to PBA star Kyle Troup.
Remember that one time when brecker wasn't savage? Yeah, me neither
Happy Birthday Michael *70th* Celebrating your spirit (rip) Thank you for such beautiful music.
This is an early performance by this lineup. I saw them in Tokyo a few months earlier and it was Kenny Kirkland on piano and Omar Hakim on drums. I saw this lineup many times.
Wow, must have been insane also!!
Adam Nussbaum is such a killer player.
Amen!
I got to meet Adam Nussbaum and attended a masterclass from him. He was unbelievable as always. A really nice guy too
Agreed. I saw him at PASIC in Columbus, OH about 12 years ago. What a collection of jazz drummers - Ed Soph, Joe Labarbara, Adam, and my favorite, Jeff Hamilton! They were all awesome.
Adam Nussbaum is one of the best. Nice guy as well. Pride of Norwalk Ct
One of my favorites, fo' sho'
33:33 is the beginning of an amazing solo from Brecker.
Pure love - sickness and passion.
Joey Calderazzo - master of jazz piano and daisy duke shorts
Grande concerto de Michael Brecker! Como muitos outros aqui no canal. Inscrito aqui, obrigado pelo vasto material!
Can not get enough of this. Love it. Love it.
Great coverage
Damn! The 80's were a tough fashion moment for jazz musicians. lol
+Brian Hartman lol, yeah big time! oh man, the pianist it's just insane!! so funny
i feel like that style is back in fashion haha
"the pianist" lol - Joey Calderazzo, one of the most kicking pianists of the 90s and 2000s.
Worst fashion of the 80's White Jazz musicians or PGA golfers
There were few fashion critics in the audience in those days.
Hell yeah, the last song is a real jazz masterpiece. I listened the last track starting from 44:30 at least 10 times on my Marshall headset.
Woaw!!! Mr. Brecker and Mr. Nussbaum are on fire!!!
Outstanding! Hats off -
Choices is so great ! can't stop listening that tune
Best music discovery for me this year! :)
thanks for sharing. look like they all had so much fun in this concert
Wow! This is smokin'! Thanks for posting.
Just so GREAT.
AWESOME !!!!!
louie CK on drums
Adam Nußbaum is so incredible dynamic... ive seen him some years before with John Scofield in Munich, where he played totally sensibel.
I really wish the Scofield trio with Nussbaum had recorded and gigged more. Totally timeless music, and apparently Sco couldn't get bookings for that group. I envy you that you got to see them live. The Club Vielharmonie gigs in Munich that were released as Out like a Light and Shinola are some of my favorite music ever.
@@zenobardot That exactly was the concerts i have been at... You can hear one of my friends on the recording ;-) Jazztimes writes about Steve Swallow saiing: “The audience at the Vielharmonie was young, beer-drinking, pot-smoking, balls-to-the-wall, and the trio’s music was a part of that milieu. Audiences in jazz clubs in the U.S.A. had become more sedate and elderly, though no less fond of getting snockered. The music on the two CDs from ’81 recalls for me a place as well as a time, and reminds me how much fun can be had with a musical instrument.”
Best of the Best!
6:15-6:22 is so well placed and beautiful, what a god.
Michael Brecker, another level!
Exelentes músicos del mundo del Jazz
15:00 It was an amazing feat to channel Miles Davis from beyond the grave when he wasn't even dead yet.
GREAT!
Absurdo o nível musical desse time, isso sim é festival.
Sim claro com certeza...
I've seen videos of Terry Kath of Chicago. Mike Stern has reminded me of him, the way he plays on stage.
round about 2 andahalf minutes u can c mike s in the background crazy dancing on the mad lines of m brecker ...and smiling...cool
maravilloso
Brecker giving that stank face @ Stern's Guitar Solo during "Nothing Personal" 😀
Louis C.K. on drums🔥
Is that really Joey Calderazzo on piano,... looking so young... anyhow, he plays his ass off! great lineup! And MB incredible, as always... Miss him!
22 yo joey
Sa Majesté ténor sax ! quelle maîtrise
Uuuuufffff el mas bravo en el saxo Michael un virtuoso.
Legend
Brecker etait un phenomene
The best....
45:54 absolutely mind blowing
Full Concert - 08/16/87 - Newport Jazz Festival (OFFICIAL)
But no Original Rays ??? Not the full concert without Michael Brecker Band Original Rays performance.
Greatest player of his generation
44:36 is the actual start time for "Syzygy"
Incroyable devant ce public balnéaire !
Where's original Rays??
Michael Brecker Band full concierto. 8/16/87 Newport festival jazz concierto
Rest in Peace Jeff Andrews... :-(
oooh weeee
Adam "Big League Chew" Nussbaum always rockin the drums like none other.
Mike Stern. Goes to the same hairdresser as Dee Dee Ramone. Hot player.
TOP
Ok I'm gonna say it. I don't like the way Stern solos but he can sure write a wicked good head. Brecker was a motherf#*% monster !!!
I can appreciate his soloing, but sometimes his tone is shit. Though that's not always the case. Sometimes with Miles he had one mutherfucking killer sound!
I agree. His solo on this song featured on the album is literally painful to my ears.
But sometimes he's excellent. His live solo on Song for Barry is GREAT.
20:45 goes into the biggest breakdown at 20:48, so dankkkkk
This says 'Full Concert". but it's missing "Original Rays" that was played on the same set and a very grainy, but very memorable performance is available elsewhere from some VHS conversion. How come this segment is missing from this nice video copy?
I was wondering the exact same thing! That performance of Original Rays was epic!
+1
Further, it appears that version of Original Rays have been blocked for copyright reasons and is unavailable anywhere. Mike Stern's solo on Original Rays was one of the reasons I abandoned listening to heavy metal and started to listen to jazz.
Seriously one of the most epic jams I heard. There is a best of video from this festival that still has that track. It used to be a video on its own and youtube removed in unfortunately. I used to watch it all the time and have been bummed ever since it's been removed.
joey age 22, ridiculous
Gia Koka what joey?
calderazzo
Yes Gia, Joey Calderazzo's Piano is so fascinating, I listened that last song starting from 44:30 with Calderazzo's piano play more than 10 times! :-)
My favorite..
hot hot hot !!
They played Original Rays at this show and it's mind-blowing but it doesn't show up here? There is another video of it in much lower quality on youtube
Hot damn! Name me a modern dude more capable than Calderazzo, you cant! I would have wanted to be Herbie back in the day. I would want to be Joey today.
Joey is the best jazz pianist of his generation
Is he playing like Miles, then like Wayne Shorter there for a second? So masterful
The EWI has an 8 octave range!
Killer players love the Drummer Adam one of the best on planet
didn't know Louis CK was such a great player back in the day
why do i hear bach suite no.2 b minor in 10:40 ... xdd omg ill always love dat solo
good ear, I think that's what he's workin in
They’re high as hell!
This was during a time when you actually had to have talent to be a musician. Today all you need is a good plastic surgeon and a decent PC Tech.
😮 Man…Who’s the drummer? TIGHT!
Adam NussBOMB
What is the name of the song starting at 23:30?
Upside Downside
alguém pode me informar o nome do pianista ?
+ABNER VIEIRA, o nome do pianista e Joe Calderazzo, eu também não conhecia, mas e um muito grande demais musico, abraço pra você. ate mais.
Obrigado mano!!!
33:33 are you KIDDING me Mike?
28:30 🙌🏼
