Thanks so much for your comment! There’s lots more I could have said about Orwell and London and the state of the world right now but chose not to. It was an amazing ride, and I’m v glad I did it and even more that people like the video. Thanks for watching!
yes I'm not sure why that came to me. But he was really marooned there. And, I didn't mention it, but he'd already contracted TB (which was to kill him later) by the time he was there. First up I don't suppose the cold damp air of Jura is the best place to deal with TB but secondly I guess he was in a hurry to finish his book, perhaps he knew he didn't have long, I don't know. Thanks for watching!
@@londoncenturies Well unless you commute to the Big Ben every ride, I assume you live in London, so a wee bit noisier. I have ridden in some remote bits of Scotland too, but never felt isolated, though I was. But we love your videos and I love the new theme.
Yes, there was a point there (when I found out about my planned onward ferry not running for a few weeks and I had to decide whether to press on or not, I thought to myself, What on earth are you doing! I had nowhere to stay, no way (that I knew of) off the island. Even in summer, that ferry only goes every 3 days. It's a good place to write a book simply because there are no distractions!
A few years ago when I was working in Myanmar, based in Napyidaw, I used to cycle at weekends along the old Mandalay road which I am sure George Orwell would have passed nearby, along the adjacent railway line, during his time as a policeman in Burma. His experiences formed the basis for his novel 'Burmese Days' written in 1934. It was a beautiful section of road lined with big old trees that were probably there a century ago when he travelled that way himself. I also visited Orwell's house in Kathar town which is now preserved as a monument. It's a long road from there to Wigan Pier!
Now that would be quite a trip to make by bike, from there back to Wigan. I’ve read much of his other stuff but not about his time in Myanmar. From the little I know of the place, I imagine it’s an interesting spot to work in?
What an excellent adventure. Done my share of "hmm, this path has disappeared" bike "riding" so was chuckling away a certain points, but the scenery - wow
Very glad you liked it and thanks for watching! Yes, the ferries were key to the whole trip really. I've been scouring maps for other routes like that but at the moment it's seeming like that was a bit of a one-off. Won't stop me looking for more, though. Back soon. Happy riding!
