I have an EVGA RTX 3080 FTW Ultra. I don’t have the need to upgrade but will upgrade when I don’t have the VRAM to play the games I want to play. I do plan to upgrade to AM5 from AM4 and switch to a smaller form factor PC when the Micro Center opens in Santa Clara later this year.

I've never been one for upscaling. It always looks weird to me. However, I'm a huge fan of frame generation. I thought it was gimmicky, but that shit can really save you if a game only looks good at higher settings, but you're only getting 30-40 frames.

Went from 3070 to 4070 ti super. My fps almost quintupled in games like cyberpunk although I went from 1080p to 1440p. 8 gb vram is hell even for 1080p gaming. Went from 20-35 fps with dlss quality in 1080p to 100 fps in 1440p with dlss quality and Frame Generation 60-70 without fg. Factoring in the resolution doubling and leavung fg out of the equation i basically quadrupled my pixel output per second. Best upgrade so far.
There must have been something wrong with your 3070. I had one for years, used it at 1440p and it was nowhere near that bad. Quick look at TechPowerUp's 7700 XT review from September 2023 shows the 3070 getting 60 FPS at 1440p (no ray tracing) in Cyberpunk.
@@stefannita3439 I was using it with Raytracing ultra at that time. No overdrive. Now I get those FPS with RT overdrive. I never play without RT. Seems like for RT you need at least 10 gb vRam at 1080p. I switched from a 1070 in 2022 to a 3070 just for the raytracing and couldn't play a game at a reasonable framerate. Hitman 3 also ran at 30 fps in 1080p with rt. Dying light 2 unplayable. Farcry 6 was 90 fps then dropped to 20-30 after 5-10 minutes with hd-texturepack because of vram. The Card was so much more capable but the vram size and speed choked it. In Cyberpunk I was also getting 45-60 with rt ultra and dlss quality but after a few minutes it went to 20-30 because of vram. I've learned my lesson and went for the 16 gb 4070 ti super straight away. And I was right with a 4070 ti 12 gb I'd have the same issues now. A lot of games go to 12 or 13 gb usage (not allocation) at times in 1440p. In my opinin 10 gb are an absolute must for 60 tier cards 70 tier needs to have 16 gb at least or they are only 1080p cards. I've never tried 4k but I'd guess if the 4080 counts as a 4k card it should have at least 20 gb. Because 16 is gonna be tight when sometimes 14 gb are being used in 1440p already.
I built my 1st PC about a year and a half or two years ago, put a3060 Ti 8gb VRAM (ouch?) in and it works for me still. Only now going through Doom Eternal and getting good numbers.
If you can’t find a good deal, then just wait for the 50 series. Also, he does bring up some good points when it comes to the features Nvidia has to offer. A lot of people aren’t buying PCs strictly for gaming, they’re also getting them for work related tasks. I think if AMD wants to change the way how people think about the Radeon brand, they need to improve on their work related features as well. Not sure if RX 8000 will do that but their current modo clearly isn’t working.
Don’t worry about upgrading every generation just worry about actually playing the games that you’re buying that GPU for instead of just chasing the next GPU. I am one of the people that had a 2070 and upgraded to a 4080 super and I played so many games instead of worrying about what the next GPU was so I am OK not upgrading GPU for a decade or so
My 3060ti has been treating me just fine. Was able to play through the Last of Us at 4K with almost maxed graphics settings when I used FSR3 (with framegen). Would it look better at native resolution? Sure, but it still looks really freaking good and runs really smooth. Modern graphics software has gotten so good you can really stretch a card if you try
I skip 2, 3, or 4 generations. I mean I ran a Opteron x4 until my Ryzen 1400. Then I skipped to a 5600. Back in the day I did upgrade more, but I also was upgrading systems for family and friends and taking in old computers and would use my old parts in another systems as I ran LAN parties at least once a month with friends and family (I had 12 in my house at one time and 5 of the systems were mine and my wife's. Later they were for my kids. I stopped upgrading others but I still had enough parts to build a system for my Son in Law and my grandkids with my Ryzen 1400, 8GB memory, a 2TB hard drive, a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6gb, a 550 watt Antec PSU and Antec case and a 21" 1080p monitor. They later switched to a NVME gen 3 1TB and moved the 2TB hard drive for storage of photos and videos. My 5600, 32GB DDR4 3200, and 6650XT has been very nice. I am tempted in getting the Ryzen 9700, but I likely will skip to the next generation after that unless I can get a good deal on a 9700X3D. I want to stick to 65w (and 200w for the GPU) so I was a bit worried when AMD upped the power draw on the 7000 series. And yes back in the day I went through a lot of CPUs... 386 SX-25, 486 DX-33, Cyrix PR-200 (the only pre-built and worst computer I ever owned), AMD K6-2 350, 450 Duron 600 (@900 with the pencil trick and one of my favorite CPUs ever... so much performance for so little money at the time). Then I got an Athlon 1400 and 1800 And Athlon XP 2200 and 2600, then my Opteron x2 2800, x4 3000, Ryzen 1400, and 5600. I just liked the underdog and just never was interested in Intel back in the day and now they are priced better but I would have to get a new PSU, case, heatsink... making them cost hundreds of dollars more. I'm running a 21 year old case and 12 year old PSU and they run great. I also run the retail box cooler for my Ryzen and 2 120mm low RPM case fans. I also have NO AC in my house and 2 weeks ago it hit 90'F. Intel is a space heater.
I got a question, I have a ryzen 7 3700x and a Rtx 3050. I want to upgrade my gpu to a rtx 4060ti. Is there a better option? My goal is to not drop bellow 240 fps in fortnite 1080p since i have 240hz.
efficiency too, the 4070 super has basically the same performance as the 3090 while drawing half the power (half the vram too unfortunately, but that shouldn't really impact gaming that much)
Can you try convince my brother to buy a used pc/pc parts, ive tried convincing him but he wont budge, he has a tight budget and buying new isnt a good option can you please help?
i’d argue the only thing really worth upgrading an older gpu is the vram, 8 gb is insufficient for most games at 1440p, and with that i’d consider a 7800 xt, 7900 gre or 4070 at the minimum my 3060ti is struggling ):
I am right now in the process of saving up to the 50 series. currently running a 3080 but after I upgraded my monitor I need a more powerful GPU. And because saving up to a 4090 would take probably as long as it takes for the 50 series to be released I might just start saving for that.
Went from a 3060 to a 4070 and it was a decent boost, but ngl I wish I waited for something slightly better. With a 4k monitor I could really use it. Though my 3060 died not long after so I guess it wasn't a bad time...
The 20 and 40 series are skipits, if you're budget get a 10 series, or get a 30 series. If you're willing to wait for the 50 series, go for it. Or, just buy any AMD card besides the 6500 XT.
The cheapest gaming 'upgrade' is downgrading your resolution. If running 4k drop to 1440p etc. Instant performance upgrade for cheap if you need to stretch out an older gaming rig until you can afford the new super expensive gpu.
I just bought a 4070 ti super to replace my palit 3060 ti and tbh the performance uplift is incredible with RT enabled. HOWEVER it cost over £700 so really, it probably isn't worth it when the 5000 series are around the corner.
The 50 series is literally just around the corner surely? So why not just wait a couple of months to see if it's better? I know theres always better tech around the corner but like, in this case Id probably wait.
I have a 3080 Ti... I don't see much of an upgrade in the 4070 range... the 4090 Looks like a nice upgrade but with the 50 series coming out I am hopeful the 5080 Ti will be the same card as the 5090 but with half of the same ram
Short answer: wait for the 50 series

Anndd whatever month I get that setup this year I’ll play EVERY game. I notice it’s not a lot of unknown games on that setup published.
I can’t wait. I’ll do ALL emulators too!
Why do you recommend the Rx 6600 over the Rx 5700 Xt when the 5700 Xt performs better in most games
Mostly because 5700 XT can only be found used. And who knows how much it has been abused. 6600 is still available brand new for peace of mind and warranty. 5700xt also uses much more power. Almost double.
@@dann5399 thanks for your take. i wanna buy used regardless so would you say the only reason then is the power usage
@@henri2300 Yea, 5000 series had issues with drivers during early game releases. But now driver issues non-existent. The power issue is no joke though, it uses 100W more. Calculate your electricity cost by how many hours you game per day and see how much more it costs to run per year. 5700 xt is getting kinda outdated for even 1080p gaming. I would save, and try to find a used 6700xt at minimum.
A third option: the 6650xt has the performance of the 5700xt, with the modern features, warranty, and lower powerdraw of a 6600. Costs abt 20 bucks more than 6600, but it seems worth it
5700 XT does not have hardware for mesh shaders. Right now it's only a big deal in Alan Wake 2 but it's only going to become more important

I just came from a mobile 1050ti to a desktop 3050. Now that the 5000 series is out, I can just wait for upper end 3000 series cards or lower end 4000 to go out of demand so I can buy them for cheaper. That's life on a budget: always live a generation behind and be happy with what you can get.
And frame generation is pretty solid too
my 1650 super still fills up my gaming craving. im gonna upgrade when the 70 series comes 😂
would game development be good as a reason to upgrade?
I'm sticking with my 4070 ti super for now, the 50 series looks cool but I'm waiting for the 60-70 series before changing again
I've never been one for upscaling. It always looks weird to me. However, I'm a huge fan of frame generation. I thought it was gimmicky, but that shit can really save you if a game only looks good at higher settings, but you're only getting 30-40 frames.

Silly advice because you end up selling old gpu for fraction of what you paid and then you have to drop full price again for a new one, the best advice is to sell in august right before new series come out. So you will return most of your money + pay little extra to get at least +30%
Only upgrade if performance jump is + 100%
Hey zach so for a gaming pc build for fortnite should I get a RX 7900 XTX or a 4080 super (they are paired with 7800x3d or possibly 9800x3d if i wait long enough)
I upgraded 5700X to 7800X3D, and thought might as well upgrade the 3080 to 4080 Super too. Now I almost have 2nd set of PC parts that I can use as spare/sell.
If you wait a little the 50 series will have DLSS 4 and an even better encoder, probably only cost twice as much, and not really be much faster for raw rasterizarion, but it will have the latest DLSS to make up for it.

Yes, but you could do better. Get a 5600 and 6700xt. Am4 has a better upgrade path than current intel socket and unless you want to enter directly at the 12100f or 12600k, it's not worth picking up. The 6700xt is a better gaming card by far as well. Hope this helps

The only reason i am even considering upgrading from a 3080 to the latest (or probably upcoming gen) card is cause my 3080 isnt working properly
