The video was shot in 4K from three Panasonic GH5s camera. It was recorded using $1700 Sennheiser AVX-ME2 microphones. I spend over 5-6 hours to edit the multi-cam set-up. I also travelled to Boston and stayed in a hotel to conduct this interview. So there was a lot of cost involved. Really great camera setup on this, you have really put a lot of effort and money into creating a great production. Kudos.
Android OS is one the best examples, that is open-source but still has serious privacy concerns, tracks behavior and is distributed with integrated blobs.
We must understand that open-source is a development model. Open-source may not necessarily protect your privacy as its main ethics are different.
That’s a great example! Several megacorps use open-source, to their advantage.

We need more people that can speak their mind, and explain their opinions without riding the fence. Too many people are afraid of offending others and being pc. Agree or not with this guy, that's really all he does and it's admirable.

I use open source to describe free software because:
- "Free Software" by the FSF's definition also describes open source
- It is much simpler to explain to somebody who isn't familiar with the work of the FSF that an Open Source piece of software is a piece of software of which source code is available and modifiable by anyone. To them, free software will just be software which is available free of charge - with or without the source
- The Free Software Foundation is one of many organizations for free and open computing. There are others out there, and each of these are a step in the right direction (as Stallman said, Azure Sphere is a step towards more free software)

I am a long time FSF member (and will continue to be so) but I can't help but be a little frustrated when RMS dives into the broader political conversation. There are too many other considerations when discussing a political party/figure to appropriately stay within the scope of Free Software. Arguably all politicians live, to some degree, in hypocrisy so I feel it's more beneficial to Free Software to focus on the ethics and relevant laws related to Free Software than to rant about the perceived state of politics of one country or another. For an example of what best furthers the Free Software movement (and convinced me to become an FSF member), watch the lecture RMS gave at the University of Calgary in 2009.

Fascinating interview. Great job! Particularly, in reigning him in, and not letting him trample you over, as he so often seems to do when others interview him. I know he probably never intends to bully the interviewer, but he does seem to, perhaps, be rather intimidating to the uninitiated. Like starting @ 55:35 .You handled him perfectly. Almost as if you have done this before;)

There were a lot of such moments :) We fought a lot, off camera. Yes, I do know how to handle Richard. At times it's a challenge to get your point across and get some answers beyond what he wants to say. Well a journalist's job is not always easy. I have known him for over 10 years now. I love him. After this heated interview, we went out together to enjoy Chinese food.

I agree with Stallman with issues regarding software freedom and self-respect, but don't agree with his politics. Though I appreciate the fact that he keeps those things separate for the most part.

The issue towards end is something I get into unpleasant debates about all the time. I believe FREE SOFTWARE + OPEN HARDWARE; ETHICAL IoT is the ONLY solution to the potential (and seemingly inevitable) dangers of IoT. I also believe most people's fears of IoT are things that we already experience metaphorically in current society and, for every worry of how IoT could theoretically oppress us; I could show you an equal or greater amount of use cases that could theoretically free us from our pre-existing chains. I have a question. Could someone make an A.I. device, without using an external connection, that could reconisze what I am saying and speak it out clearly. I am old and much of the time people are unable to make out wht I am saying.
Such a device is indeed possible. It may be inaccurate occasionally (maybe .01% of the time), but it is very possible.
You can use a text to voice software. I suffer from complete loss of voice from time to time, I use an application in my cellphone, and on my laptop.

Firstly, I want to say that I hold Mr. Stallman in high esteem, and am appreciative of all the work he's done to contribute to and promote GNU/Linux.
Secondly, I agree with many of Mr. Stallman's political goals of higher wages, and breaking the aristocracy that grips our government.
(Here's the but : ) ) But, I have to state that there has been no, absolutely no, proof that Russia hacked the U.S. election. None, whatsoever.
Moreover, democrat politicians lie about helping the poor and working class. They never raise taxes on the rich. Not only that, they set up loopholes such that rich, fat-cat, business owner can park their billions overseas, tax free.
You couldn't be more wrong and off-base. Maybe, now, 5 years later, you understand. (Unless you area right=wing extremest, then you will have ignored everything and pretended it never happened)

I have built a software, which has 0 malicious activity. Yet I did it for profit. so if a user could change it then sell it, why did i invest all that money, while he only did few changes he can still sell it? Do i understand it incorrectly?

There are plenty of voices talking about "real" politics, it's everywhere. There are not a lot of people talking about free software, it's not a mainstream issue in the public eye. Don't be so shortsighted.
yeah, i think stallman is right about virtually everything with regards to software, but some of his political takes are just so insane. he actually thanked biden on his personal blog for trying to mandate the needle. for a guy who spends his whole life campaigning about freedom from tyrants in the field of computing, he sure seems to have no problem with the government mandating a forced experimental medical procedure against their will, that they neither need nor want, and that has the very potential possibility or even likelihood of doing harm to you. i just don't understand how he can reconcile those two things together

Nah. I was using my mac and we had a word about how I do need certain tools to get the job there. Me and RMS go beyond this interview :) We are good friends too.

It's interesting that Stallman's idea of political liberty doesn't follow his idea of technological liberty. The contradiction is startling.
With computer-related issues, he's a Thomas Paine/Benjamin Franklin/Lysander Spooner type of guy. His focus is on liberty and he defends it with the vigor and deep understanding of a wise man. But with politics, he makes the modern mistake of equating democracy with Freedom and speaks like he gets information from Rachel Maddow or Anderson Cooper. In fact, I was surprised to find that he even believes in elections or 'government' at all.
In other words, his tech talk is straight outta 1776, whereas his political speech is firmly planted right here in the mainstream propaganda of 2023.
'Kick it out of your life' - doesn't work for health issues. Imagine refusing an X-ray because the machine uses proprietary software?
that's a different issue, and i don't think he would refuse that. using somebody else's xray with proprietary software on it doesn't inherently infringe his freedom in any way, because it's not his machine. he doesn't reject the output of proprietary programs, for example he won't reject to view a document just because the document was made and compiled on a Windows machine using proprietary software, as long as he can view it with free software, then that doesn't directly infringe on his freedom in any way. he doesn't condemn you or a hospital for using proprietary software, he just feels sorry for them, because they deserve freedom too, but whether or not an xray machine runs proprietary software is the hospital's concern at that point, not stallman's, because he is getting an xray either way, and if his information was going to be put in a data base, the hospital is going to do that regardless of whether or not the machine is free software or not

commanderdonut lol. We talked for 80 mins. He was tired as it was end of the day. I was tired as I had done back to back interviews. Then we went out together for shipping and Chinese food. We have known each other for a long time. I would appreciate if you just said thank you for brining this interview to you thankless people. You disappoint me.
80min!!! you act like thats more than enough to have this conversation; Stallman could go on and on regarding this topic. Ok you guys know each other and this maybe wasn't the interview of a life time; but as you allude to in the interview he is a legend in the free software community and maybe when he is no longer you will see my perspective. Maybe you had a great conversation over chinese afterwards but we didn't get to see/hear that; when Stallman can no longer talk for himself and your interview is one of the finite number of records of his word remaining, i'm sure humanity will all be longing for an extended interview.
The comment regarding being rude was just about how i read you trying to end the interview multiple times while he continued to talk like you never queued him to let it end; to me it seemed obvious he wanted to continue talking on the subject while you just wanted it to end, and i just wanted to hear what he had to say. commanderdonut we never tried to end the interview. Why would I when I flew all the way there to meet him. In fact in the end all my 2 cameras ran put of 6 batteries but we continued to record with the 3rd camera. In fact he was so tired that he even forgot the 4 freedom so I asked him to Kay it out. That said , RMS has been saying the same thing for the last 30 years and interviewer get intimidated. I don’t as I know him very well and I do meet and interview high profiles folks fro the Linux world. Just recorded an interview with Red Hat CEO at the Red hat summit. The reason I bought him to show was to talk about new challenges and realistic solutions beyond ‘ don’t use it’, which is a lame and easy answer. So yes I had to push him. Take a break. Relax and enjoy the interview.

Robbie Robinson I cant launch gcc from the kernal. Also vi isnt present. Neither is a shell. Hmm if the kernal is the entire OS looks like someone forgot to add the standard software. A UNIX like OS, to be compatible with unix must come with many standard parts. GNU is the OS with linux as the kernal. This is the definition of a unix operating system and has been since the 70's. Windows however is a different story. The kernal was given the ability to do everything, which is why it turned into a mess and security nightmare.
Robbie Robinson if you use busybox then it is not GNU but busybox/linux. Busybox is a different implementation of many parts of the UNIX OS. It only works in the same way because it implements POSIX. I made my own GNU floppy distros and busybox distros years ago. Next you will be saying OS X aint UNIX :D

Robbie Robinson Of course not because Linux is not an operating system. I have always said I use a certain distro, by name, or if its obscure or custom and not called Android I say I am using an OS based around Linux. If they mistake Linux as the whole OS its not normally a problem as they usually pick up on what Im saying. I just educate them about the specifics should they ask what I mean when I say GNU or Debian. Also busybox is not much of a great example seeing as its going to be used embedded in a product, so instead I would say Im using a Humax PVR for example.
If you are really determined to make "Linux = Operating System" then I suggest you go and edit each and every relevant wikipedia article, including the one on UNIX history, which all state that linux is a PART of a Unix like operating system just like the Hurd microkernel and the Mach kernel.

the move to corporate personhood started long before the 1970s. i would argue that it started well before the industrial revolution, even, where the concept of the king/monarch was akin to a corporate identity both entitled to the natural rights of man, but exempt from the consequences of braking them at the same time.

I agree with many of stallmans principles around freedom and privacy but he seems to me to be a little resentful toward financially successfull people. No one wants to spend years of their life studying and working on something just so they can give it away for free. I will forever be greatful for Stallman and Torvalds for their work and the millions of others who have collaborated to create the various flavors of GNU/Linux but cant expect that everyone will be incentivised by "goodwill towards others" to do productive things. If you want to be a leader don't sit in front of a group of college students eating your toe jam either.
Stallman has nothing against people getting paid for their work, he has a problem with people making money by abusing others. Whether that be by writing and selling a computer program that is intentionally restricted to extort the user or being a corrupt politician.
You agree with "many" principles, but not about free software?! Curious about what you actually agree with... And do you really need an explaination of the word "free" in the context of FSF and RS?
About economical wealth, even in this interview he says:
- "I don't believe in stopping anyone from making money, I don't believe we should all have the same amount of money or anything like that."
What I agree with is that the user of a piece of software has the right to know what that software is doing and to be able to control it. If there is a feature that you don't want, you should be able to turn it off. If you don't want it accessing your data and sending user reports to the companies servers you should be able to turn that off.

Henrik Andersson turn off/remove, not the same thing, I'm aware, but in the context that i was using it, I meant the same thing. I think the problem with "free software" is that in order to make a program totally "freedom respecting" you basically have to give the recipe away free of charge. The only way that you can control who has paid and not paid for a program that you have developed is to have usernames, passwords, product keys, etc. And the more you do to make sure you will get paid for your work the more freedom you have to take away. Tell me, with all of the abuses of users of facebook, youtube, and twitter how come there arent any "free" alternatives to these programs?

Could you please interview Eric Raymond? His idea of liberty is much more complete.
An idea being complete and an idea being good are different things. RMS came up with the idea of giving people the power to change the tools they use. It is pretty clear to tell that his passion is in this one, specific case that deals with people using tools, not people being used by the tools (or their creators). To apply "libre" to a general principal for all human interactions would be much too varied and sundry, to cover the corner cases that people use to gain power over others. If you pay attention to what he says, he is very adamant that he does not want to dive into fields that are off-topic. This is why he is well known and well respected.
ESR may have-what you find to be-a more "complete" idea, but he is also very closed minded, holds right-wing beliefs to his chest, and is willfully blind to many of his inadequacies [in practically every subject]. I follow his blog, but find that his coverage of a topic and conclusions is often puerile. ESR is not a good programmer; and his writing reflects this as he rarely writes about technical specifics that would indicate a competent understanding. He wrote a good book, and got lucky (and proceeded to take works from others and claim prestige for it). He has many opportunities for you to donate to him on his Web-site, too. He also likes to show off many of the awards or mentions he has received. But he is writing about the fights of the Colosseum while being a spectator.

Not so - in fact it ESSENTIAL to civilisation that the concept of liberty is a general prinicipal.
What is liberty? It means the absence of coercion - or freedom from coercion if you will. That is to say, that people have the right not to have force used against them -without their consent.
Stallman emphasises this point in software ware but undoes his argument for it by denying the concept of consent elsewhere.
Consent is key. Why?
What makes love making not rape - consent.
What makes employment not slavery - consent.
What makes a transaction not a robbery - consent.
Nor does democracy/voting negate the fact. A large group of people cannot vote to have sex with a someone if that someone does not consent. That would be gang rape. Consent of the individual is key!
Can people have force used against them with their consent? Absolutely! Some people are into Boxing or BSDM etc.

Stallman brings up the point of 'manufacturing consent'. This is a troubling concept to be sure, but Stallman takes it out of context and undoes his argument. The manufacturing of consent is dangerous in politics, yes! Politics puts rule making into an involuntary organisation that has a monopoly on the use of force. This means that peaceful people are forced to obey under duress, rules that they may not have consented to, but also rules that a majority was tricked into and are now compelled to obey without recourse. That is a big problem!
Manufacturing consent in the private sphere of life however is not so sinister. A better word for this would be influence. Neither does it compel the whole of society nor deny other choices.
What is more important to consider is that good ideas do not require force. If your idea requires force then I would suggest it is not that great an idea.
Stallman want laws against organisations even requesting consent.
There are two ways for humans to interact:
voluntarily, with consent, permission, through agreement and contract
OR
through force, coercion, madation & compulsion.
A society can organise itself via consent or force. Laws are the threat of violence against those who do not comply.
Stallman want the principal of consent to be violated by law (force). Furthermore he want an all powerful organisation (government- whom he rails against) to have the power to force this upon people!
This is like fucking for virginity, or spanking a violent child to show them violence is wrong.
"he is very adamant that he does not want to dive into fields that are off-topic." - if his topic is 'free software' he was very much off topic, as the first 15? 20? minutes of the video were mostly about politics!
Respected? He was more about maintaining control of the narrative in this interview. He would not allow Swapnil to bring in hypotheticals and divert from his agenda. I just saw too much ego on display.
Stallman has done well to recognise the importance of formulating "the idea of giving people the power to change the tools they use." in the GPL but is a hypocrite it now extending the ideas into general principles for all human interaction.
ESR for his part recognises and rejects the use of coercion - be it in open source or society.

I agree that drawing folk implicitly into a license agreement they knew nothing about is wrong, but saying Facebook is 'evil' is going too far. Stallman describes it as a sin or crime because he's made a career out of insulting everyone. You can't put Facebook at the same level as murder or terrorism.
RMS maintains his ability to be one of the most difficult people to interview. I don't agree with him 100%, but he does have good advice about maintaining privacy and personal freedom.

The world is a market place of ideas. All forms of development should be able to exist. People who buy and use the products should make the decisions as to what survives. They should also have a want and a need to know and understand implications of their choices.
Whenever he mentions Linux, I can't help but feel that he has a tone of bitterness in it, as if he was supposed to receive all the fame and recognition Linus Torvalds did by making use of his work and coupling it with GNU parts and refuses to move on.
CrimSun It has nothing to do with success. GNU and the FSF stand for something that Linux doesn't, and by using the name "Linux" his ideals are undermined, and the GNU people get no credit for creating the OS.
The only thing that scares me, or worries me about free software, is criminals like child porn, people's traffic, etc. They can use free software and be well protected.

yes, freedom is scary. we should abolish free speech and any other kind of freedom as well, in the name of stopping criminals and terrorists. kinda sounds familiar somehow, actually
