I have an old pink Pearl President Series from 1965 and the wrap is still perfect. I also have a Pearl Export and the wrap is still mint.

You and I experienced the same issues. I called Ludwig in Monroe, NC, and they would not even talk to me directly, and that I would have to go through a dealer for anything. Having said that, my wrap came out perfect on 2 kits. It has been a year now, and there are no bubbles, no peeling, no issues. I think if you follow my instructions you will have very satisfactory results.

I had success with getting the badge off by spraying it with Orange oil (this dissolves sticky label glue) then I used fine fishing line to get under the badge

I get my wraps from Precision Drum Company in New York, and I bought the glue from them too because it was cheapest there.

never sand anything across the grain, always with the grain .

No, the plasticizers deteriorate and dry out over time, and there is no true restoration technique. Both of my Ludwig sets came out much better than factory and I am completely satisfied with the materials supplied by Precision Drum in NY.

I’ve a set of 80’s Tama, all black. I keep struggling with what color to wrap it with. That white you took off looked great, and I recently saw a set of Premier’s with that kind of white and they looked amazing! White is just so out of my wheel house. I’ve seen the “black” version of this on line and it’s hard tell. It look’s like it might be awesome, or look like tin foil.
My only “OMG what’re you doing?” is that you made your marks on the inside of the shell with what looks like a Sharpie. If so, OMG what’re you doing? I’d have used pencil so it could be erased. But that’s just me. Solid wrap either way.

The sharpie can be removed using IPA (rubbing alcohol)...not to worry. As long as your shell is clear coated, you will be fine, but yes, pencil is a safer option.
      Thanks for watching!

Great tutorial. I have a question. I have a Gretsch renown blue metal finish drum set. They never made an 8 inch Tom in that finish. I already have 2 10 inch toms in blue metal. Can I buy an 8 inch Tom in another finish, remove that, remove the blue metal on one of the 10’s and rewrap the 8inch. Make sense? Is that a possibility without damaging the wrap I want to reuse? Thanks

Generally, the wrap will be brittle after being applied to a shell for so many years - also, if there are any holes for hardware, I doubt they'd line up. Best to rewrap from scratch IMO. Thanks for watching!

I had a long talk with Kevin Packard from Ludwig about their wraps coming off. Mine are doing the same thing. My kit is from 2006. They were well aware that the glue they were using was inferior and because they received so many complaints, they switched to their new "wrap tight" process. I told Ludwig I thought they should rewrap my drums and they weren't remotely interested. My old Ludwig kit.(1978) never had ONE issue with the wrap EVER. Ludwig needs to wake up!!!!!!!!!!

Well..when I got the kit...brand new.. the 18' floor tom was not done well. So I had the Drum Pad in Palatine, IL ..where I got the kit...send it back..they had it for 9 months!!!!!!!! So...while I am a Ludwig lifer...I am more then disappointed in their pathetic customer service.
Who do you get your wraps from?

I have a vintage Ludwig rockers (with mini classic lugs, made in the U.S) in a white cortex wrap, and the floor tom is a super classic..The white has yellowed over time, but the floor tom is still pretty white, as there is no difference between the wrap and the section under the lug..I was wondering if there was any possible way to remove the yellow off the wrap with any sort of heavy duty cleaner ?. I heard Oxyclean works well with Peroxide Gel..? any thoughts would be appreciated, by anyone..

“10-12 paper towels”. I smell some spontaneous combustion once he tosses it in the trash. Needs to dump those paper towels in a bucket so water before tossing them.

does anyone know if Tama glue their shells like Ludwig? I mean the same technique. I own a Tama Rockstar from the 80's. is white (almost yellow :- /) And I would like to put on those shells matte black wrapping!

Is it possible to take the wrap off a bass drum hoop for a Tama Starclassic kit? Its starting to crack and fall off now.

I'm sure it is, but if you're unsure how to approach the procedure and are uncomfortable learning on the fly, you can take the set to a musical instrument repair shop for that service. Thanks for watching!

can i use a blow dryer in replace of a heat gun?

      @redonKiLaus  10 років тому

No. You need something that is much higher temp than a blow dryer.

Ludwig mfg was unhelpful...and that is a damn shame > I'd bet Pearl would have bent over backwards.
