That is one of the best quality lathes that was ever made. The helical cut and hardened gears are of such high quality. Monarch really spared no expense making these machines. Even the tapered roller bearings at this point in time were a pretty big deal. This was before the idea of engineered obsolescence. If you look at what they sold for back in the day and adjust for inflation it is staggering how expensive they were. But they were REAL machines, just about the best available. On par with a Hendey or Revette. I have two Hendey lathes of about the same vintage and they are just workhorses. Daily drivers so to speak. My only issue is RPM they will only do about 500 max. Got to admit I am a little jealous. You really scored a sweet machine there.
Beautiful machine, Stan! I'm a big fan of magnets on drain plugs. You can see metal when something starts to fail and can remove metal that is hiding in there. I wouldn't put one near a rotating gear since a pile of debris tends to form a tit that may foul the gear.
Thats great, looks like the machine is in good shape, I started on my 1957 DSG a couple of months back but it will be a few more before I catch up with you.
Sounds great Stan. It sure could have been ugly if that shoe or setscrew found a pair of gears. Glad to see you had a successful first run. Take Care and Stay Safe. Bob
I love that colt firearms motor control!! No reverse though? Oh so rather than dual contacts they running one lead on the drum switch to flip an input leg for reverse?
I have a 1936 Monarch AA- 14" X 30" lathe I bought about 10yrs ago. I haven't figured out how to wire it up. I think it was 440 3ph. If I ever get it wired up I would be ecstatic if it ran half as smoothly as yours. Great find. Where did you get yours?
You can always use WD-40 Original. It is mostly mineral spirits(>50%) and mineral oils (>25%). The rest is driers, fragrance, and propellants. Mineral spirits is actually one of the Stoddard Solvents. The old guys here will remember the commercial name - Varsol (The beginning of WD-40!). This stuff is expensive "spirits" but it is available everywhere. The folks at WD have done a remarkable job marketing!
.0002-.0004 preload on used bearings (no backlash) .0004-.0006 preload on new bearings, this is only the case for oil fed taper roller bearings, grease packed bearings need backlash and lubrication clearence.

Bloody lovely old lathe !. Sounds nice too . The manufacturing base our 2 countries have lost , so sad. Regards from the UK.
Looking and sounding great. She was lucky to find such a good home where she will be well taken care of.
The old girl is a thing of beauty. She makes my SB10L look like a barely basic machine! I hope she makes chips for another 80 years!
That old girl may have done some WWII work for the war effort at home!👍👍👍
Preventative maintence is key in any motor. It will save time and money.
Very nice, she deserves all the love you give her
That is one nice machine, good to see it's being properly cared for now. Heard on the last video about the crud in the sump that needed removal.
Glad there was no damage. 8:45 better safe than sorry. That old girl is only 12 year older than me...I wish I was running that good. Congratulations!!
It looks great, sounds even better. Congratulations Stan it's a beauty
such a wonderful sound....Bravo

That's exciting. I can hardly wait to see the new/old lathe up close. Congrats Stan.
That is a real lathe for sure. Congrats on the tune up.
Thanks Stan. I do love the old iron. Great job.
What a beautiful machine. Glad it found a good home. Nice rebuild!
Thanks for walking us through that. I have a model 61 I’m going to be doing the same thing to. Hope it goes as well as yours.
Really enjoyed that, Stan. She's a beauty.
Looking good Stan. You have a winner there. Best of luck with it.
that patina is gorgeous ......... and with the colt starter
Nice I just restored my Axelson 16 love the old iron!!!!
Sweet running old girl 👍👍 good find on the shift shoe !
Stan, I love looking in your box!
....your GEAR box that is! 😆
Thats great, looks like the machine is in good shape, I started on my 1957 DSG a couple of months back but it will be a few more before I catch up with you.
Excellent job, Stan....what a beauty...please take good care of her....regards and tool-envy from Germany
That will be a nice lathe when you have it finished . Has a good speed range for it's age . Cheers .
Looking good and sounds like a new machine 👍
Getting it back to tip top shape! Can't wait to see it for myself in a few weeks.
looking good Stan thanks for sharing
Just about to do this to my 12CK

Gorgeous old iron 😍
Congratulations 👍👍😎👍👍

the drum switch can be used for reverse, it makes and breaks all 3 lines
Beautiful!
Posted 4 seconds ago, wow. I have always wanted to restore an old Monarch to perfection. Maybe one day.

tapered roller bearings should be assembled by preload, nice lathe
Great machine.
Those old geared heads were so complex.
Cool machine. What's it used for?
Wow that's a beautiful lathe. One day would love to have one just like it. is that colt like the gun company for the starter
It sure looks like the same logo to me.
Fantastic moment. They sure don't build them today like that. Can you imagine what it would cost to manufacture that lathe today?
1 million dollars
Got to wonder, did external filtration make too much sense?
Way cool!!!
Tem um torno igual na minha oficina, no meu trabalho, e está funcionando.
😉😉😉👍👍👍🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
I heard that mineral spirits were banned in California. True?
There banning by overpricing .. Lol

Sweet... :o) .
O,,,
Is that spindle original? Otherwise, it appears to be an early example of a camlock.
I cant see any signs of ANY work ever done within the head.
My '36 Monarch has cam locks
What is the correct amount of preload or end play on the spindle ?
.0002-.0004 preload on used bearings (no backlash) .0004-.0006 preload on new bearings, this is only the case for oil fed taper roller bearings, grease packed bearings need backlash and lubrication clearence.
@@ShadonHKW 1/2 a thou end play ? I'm not understanding what the back lash is ?
@@ottostasi197 Preload, no end play (backlash)
It will still probably be around 80 years from now.
maybe, but the oil won't be allowed
@@steveschumacher5470 - Lubricants aren't going away. It might be derived from algae in a few generations, but ya gotta deal with moving parts.
Marlboro? ;-)
