    I live in SW Florida and the other day at the gas station I complimented a young black boy on his freeform locs. He immediately looked confused but smiled and said thank you. After he checked out he turned to me and said he was grateful for the compliment because his family and friends say ‘he needs a retwist’ and that’s it’s “not cute.” I lowkey got upset and responded “people don’t understand what FREEFORM means or looks like” and we both laughed it off in agreeance. Seeing him leave with an extra boost of confidence really made my week ❤️. This video definitely was sent to me. Im still into the versatile look (I have locs as well) but I am so ashamed sometimes with the loc community n how we shame different hair textures that we just simply don’t do enough research on…

    I absolutely hate the “your hair is not kinky, it’s dry”, “you have a curl pattern, you just need moisture to bring it out” rhetoric. Like no babes, my hair IS 4c even when it’s fully moisturized and I love it just the way it grows out of my scalp. Also, when I’m in between retwisting or interlocking I never apologize for the state of my hair - you know when ppl be like “oh, excuse my hair. I need to get it done.” (I feel this way about ppl apologizing for having bare, makeup-free face too, but that’s a whole other conversation). It would be implying that my hair is only beautiful when manicured which is a lie from the pits of hell.

      I do believe that we have less understanding of exactly what moisture (water) does for our hair because our "hair history" in this country has been to be without water or to run from water when it comes to our hair. However I also believe it gets unhealthy when we start to make someone else's hair "hair goals" and dismiss the beauty of the hair we have, however it grows out of our head. Everyone should wear their hair the way they want to and I love that we have so many choices. I also think it is more than likely healthier to do much less with our hair than we do, even as a any type of natural, loc'd, unloc'd, freeform loc, wash and go, twist out, banded, etc. We need to let other women find what works for their style and lifestyle and leave them alone. If they ASK for advice, give it. Otherwise, just celebrate them and how they express themselves through their hair.

This is despite having had similar experiences ourselves. Shout-out to you for openness, setting aside ego. May you receive the same understanding you seek to have wherever you go. I imagine that if your son becomes a parent, he'll be more likely to recognize and honor his child's full personhood and right to agency. After 19 years I decided to cut off my locs because I'd never experienced having my loose hair and playing around with it. I got so many comments insinuating I was depressed or having a meltdown simply because I decided to cut off 'good' butt length sisterlocs. The obsession with good hair has sank deeply into the natural hair movement and most people don't realize it. The concepts of washdays, 'moisturizing' 'defined' curls, 'edges', 'laid' locs, these are ALL shackles stemming from the 'good hair' movement. People don't even realize

      Girl, I'm right there with you. My parents from Haiti and ever since I started to wear my locs out around the 5 month mark (I'm about to be 8 soon, yay!), my mom has always had a problem. To the point she cried saying she doesn't have a "junkie", that she doesn't want a "junkie" etc etc. My dad has said not one word about it. My boyfriend said he loves how I'm embracing my natural beauty. Its gotten to the point that my cousin suggested getting my hair done by someone (cause I retwisted my own locs until today), my mom said it doesn't suit me and it's ruining my beauty, my brother said it didn't look good in its current state (I was in between the time for a retwist so my roots were pretty frizzy) just all kinds of stuff. And I live at home so it's a headache to hear all of it, especially unprovoked. I literally just be minding my business. I kept my hair covered and not really talk about it until I got my retwist today. Still wearing a bonnet because I don't want to suddenly hear from my mom how "nice" it is after she made a whole scene over nothing. Stand behind that journey and stay true to yourself queen.

The whole deal with shaming people for not combing their hair and acting like they have been saved by Jesus with a retwist gets on my nerves too.

    This brings up something that’s been bothering me lately about the move away from the natural hair movement. I know a lot of people are getting away because they just think it takes too much time and their hair never got to be healthy and full like the UA-cam girlies but something I don’t think we’re talking about enough is where the natural hair movement started and where it’s gone. Early Natural Hair UA-cam and blogs were full of sustainable DIYs - homemade oil blends, raw Shea butter, aloe juice, apple cider vinegar, clay washes. Now all of those things are used as marketing buzz words on a series of 5 products the company tells you have to be used together to see results from. The early movement upheld less is more and now it’s just as congested as all other hair care.

Seeing a loctitian a few times a year had my scalp feeling itchy and dry and not good. My hair was pulled and twisted thinner, but now that I've stepped away, I can see the toxic nature of the "natural" hair community. I use the dr. bronner shampoo and sometimes use black castor oil. I use black soap on my body, but now I want to try black soap on my head too. Black people have not tackled the anti black rhetoric when it comes to our hair and I am so over it.

    I think all forms of locs and natural hair is beautiful. I don't like the shade that comes from people who choose different ways to loc. I have diy mico small locs and if I say I need a tightening, it's MY form of SELF CARE. Standing in the mirror interlocking, touching my curls, seeing my scalp ect. It's the same feeling I got as a little girl when my mama would do my hair, braid, twist and/or put in fresh poppers and barrets and so on. It's okay to be different and leave others alone. My edges are full and turning amazingly grey. I interlock when I feel like I need it, I won't let anyone shame me for doing so. At the end of the day all locs no matter how big, small, flat, round, short, long, thick, thin are just an accumulation of knots, shed hair, dead skin cells and lint. That's it, that's all.

    I have a lot of coworkers from Cameroon and when decided to loc my already long 3c hair they constantly said things like “you ruined all that pretty long hair”
    According to them I look like a crazy or homeless person because apparently in Cameroon when you see someone with locs it’s a sign of depression and or homelessness.
    It didn’t necessarily hurt my feelings, but it did make me angry. I found myself feeling not quite as confident because all of sudden people felt they had the right to basically trash my appearance.
    I 100% understand where you’re coming from, after reflecting on those situations I came to the realization, that those same people who were putting me down were the same ones who constantly wore weaves and wigs. Their dislike towards my natural hair is only a reflection of their own self hate.

    I get what you are saying but some of the examples you used are from stylists who specifically detangle matted hair for ppl who were going through a tough time or depression or etc. some of the examples you used was of actual matted hair, aka Love 518. There is a difference between freeform locs and matted hair. Free form locs happens by choice but the ppl who come to Love 518 have matted hair not by choice but cuz of hardships. Just clarifying because the woman behind Love 518 has a really pure heart and it’s her mission to help those who come to her specifically to get their hair combed through.

    • @mayowasworld
      @mayowasworld  2 роки тому +6

      hmm to some degree I dont think there is a difference between freeform locs and matted hair, I think it depends on the person. I understand on her page she's doing hair for people who are going through depression, and she seems like someone who is doing work with care in mind but I still feel that the comments people leave under the video can sometimes be anti black and offensive to people with freeform. take for example the person who wrote "how can someone let themselves go this far" that could / has been said about my hair type.

    • @marajones1828
      @marajones1828 2 роки тому +9

      The comments definitely don’t always pass the vibe check but Love 518 pushes to not have judgment. She also does hair for ppl of all races, some of her clients are white. But what I meant by freeform vs matted is that these ppl did not go into this willingly wanting their hair to do this, it wasn’t a choice they made. It was a product of circumstances. It seems like ppl who have freeform locs WANT freeform locs. Which I’m thankful to your channel cuz before it, I didn’t even know what freeform locs were and I have grown to really appreciate this decision many ppl make. But the point is it’s a decision that was made. The ppl who go to Love 518 didn’t have that choice, it just happened due to different reasons. I really hope ppl can better understand that distinction and hopefully channels like yours will continue to bring awareness to this way of having hair that has very significant roots. Funny how I came across your channel around the same time I started diving into Yoruba ideology and culture and learning about our ancestors. With hair being so valued by our ancestors as an extension of your nervous system and thus your being, freeform locs are a beautiful visual extension of your being. Also even tho I don’t have locs, you have inspired me to embrace my hair (natural, big chopped 6 months ago) in its non defined state. I wish type 4 hair wasn’t always forced into this box of having to have super gelled defined curls. Our hair is beautiful in all it’s natural states, whether it’s free fluff (what I call my non defined coils) or freeform locs (evidence that type 4 hair strands are stronger together). Thank you for having this platform and just bringing awareness like you do. ❤️

  • @soularvision

    Love the take. I have manicured locs that I retwist every 4 weeks because if I don’t, those locked ropes will literally grow off my scalp so I have to make sure my hairs stay integrated. Pushing out retwists with my kind of hair just wasn’t working even when the internet was telling me that’s what was “healthy” for your roots. That being said, I use pretty much the exact same things you do for my hair, but I shampoo with Castile soap biweekly to avoid scalp dermatitis. I use the exact same soap to clean my body. If it isn’t nuts and berries and very light, I don’t put it in my hair because it’s going to make my hair CHRONICALLY dirty. That’s the irony of all these conventional “products”, they’re filled with so much extra stuff that in matted hair it actually makes your hair gross, heavy, and sticky. People who have never had locs or experience with them don’t need to be handing out no kind of advice.

One person saying that they didn’t get a re-twist in 5 months does not mean that they’re calling you, someone who is doing something with your hair, “unkept.” This is just like the White person washing their hair daily vs the Black person who washes their hair once a week. If a White person says “ugh I haven’t washed my hair in 2 days it’s so greasy,” that isn’t them saying that their Black friend’s day 5 hair is dirty. They have 2 different hair types and routines. I have been natural my whole life. I use shampoo and conditioner. There is nothing wrong with conventional shampoos and conditioners and there are a lot of misconceptions.
    Just because a shampoo or conditioner irritates your scalp or weighs down your hair, it doesn't mean it's a disfunction of the products. It can be 1. User error 2. Ingredients that you are allergic to. They are a million shampoo and conditioners to try instead.
    Scalp is skin, and if you can use soap on your skin, you can use a shampoo (which tends to have fewer surfactants/detergents anyway) on your hair and scalp. The hair/scalp picks up dirt, dust, debris, dead skin cells, and oil and surfactants ARE required to truly REMOVE them. Apple Cider Vinegar is not a surfactant, doesn’t have surfactants, and can keep the cuticle closed and resistant to water.
    With thick/freeform locs, you need to diligently rinse shampoo and conditioner out. Having *any* left on the scalp can cause irritation. And conditioner needs to be 1. Thin with limited oils or butters and/or 2. Thinned out with water to ensure it can be thoroughly rinsed out. Lastly, hair that doesn't get washed with shampoo is likely dehydrated, and the product can sit on the hair. And yes, hair that is dehydrated can look like it has no curl...but it is just dry. Softening emollients and moisture (aka hydration) are different. If you can't get water into the strands, your curl pattern, no matter what size, will not show.
    Generally, my issue with statements like "This doesn't work for me" is usually people not knowing what or how to do something in the ideal way. Where did you learn? Who taught you? Whose opinion do you value, and why?
    People should not be cruel, but it's important to acknowledge that the people saying things are supported by chemistry and working on many heads of hair. We have unique heads of hair, but haircare isn't as individual as people make it out to be

      No, it's individual. You're talking about trying about a hundred products of which most cost about $100+
      Not to mention the plastic waste, the fact that you're not going to finish the products you're allergic to
      When people say, " this doesn't work for me," it's their experience with that thing. You can't just nullify their opinions just bcze they aren't a chemist. It's like dating someone and then you realize they're toxic for you so you want leave but then you're friends and family are like, no, you don't know what you're talking about when you're the one dating the person

      @Katso Lejuta well I wholly agree with everything she said about locs and how people turn their nose at freeform, new growth etc. so I never felt the need to address it.
      But cleansing is a whole other thing

    • @sart1348
      @sart1348 2 роки тому +7

      @👑Christabel so if you need a soap with sulfates to cleanse your body (that also has hair, by the way) and it irritates you, would you stop using soap altogether or just find one that works? Do you even question the need for sulfates in your body cleansers like you might for your hair?
      Saponified oil soaps like Black Soap for example are not PH balanced and not good for the skin or hair and that's why many people find them drying...but some folks are willing to keep trying them plus countless other "natural" items...because some people equate "natural" = better/safer. That is a misconception. Ingredients in their raw form can be irritating, drying, trigger allergic reactions, permanently damage the hair, and even cause blindness. I just had a terrible reaction cutting Okra this week, for example.
      There are sulfates that are stronger, some that are milder. If you regularly use water soluble products, you don't need to use a stripping shampoo often. If you have hard water, you do need to use a chelating shampoo at least sometimes. As I said, user error, lack of understanding of ingredients, and PH balance is a much, much, MUCH bigger issue than allergies.
      If you were allergic to all these ingredients in shampoos/conditioner, you would have known a LONG time ago because they are in a plethora of beauty products.

Def made a point to steer clear of that at all costs! And grapeseed oil to moisturize for low porosity, but all i've got on me atm is coconut. Also, I wash my hair every 1-2 weeks before and after locking like any Black person - nothing dirty about it, coarser hair textures just take longer to have a buildup of oil.

And when I tell you my natural very 4c hair is doing so sooooo much better since I started using the most basic of bar soap, equivalent to USD 20cents, and stopped using shampoo! There's something also to be said about how all this stuff is expensive.... and who it leaves out because it is so expensive, you know?

    I was free forming for a while and was shamed back into retwisting. And now I’m upset with myself because the whole point of getting locs was to move away from western forms of hair styling - which for Black folks means lots of product and time being wasted. I’m getting my confidence back and washing every two weeks with just black soap and a gentle retweet without gel, then a daily spritz with water.

    Hello Beautiful. Thank you for your commentary. You are too far ahead of your time! When I first saw you honestly all I saw was look how thick and full her hair is. It’s gorgeous. I was contemplating letting my hair free form. Then I came to realization the my hair will probably not look like yours. Also, I am still transitioning from being anti black. However people like you held space for me and now I just began my loc journey. However, I am currently working to keep my hands out my hair! Don’t know if I will ever get to free form but I’m learning just how beautiful our 4C hair is. So I’m saying this to say your hair is beautiful. You are right. Don’t listen to our more ignorant brothers and sisters. They will have to get to it when they do. Keep being gorgeous and providing us wisdom!! I love it. I was snapping my fingers all thru this commentary❤😂♥️💛🩵

    I wear twists (added hair) and I remember when I went to college a lot of non-black folk was curious about how I clean my hair or how it gets clean. I remember telling them, "in a shower". And they were like how does the water reach the hair and your scalp if it is in twists....I went to a top 10 engineering school in the US and these ppl were EE/CS majors the "brightest" from the country asking stupid ass questions like that. It is so ignorant ppl view black hairstyles in general as "dirty", and I know it's the worst with freeform locs.
    It's insane bc non-blk ppl can roll out the bed w/a birdnest on their head and NO ONE questions their cleanliness but we do the most w/our hair becoming part-time chemists with these damn ACV rinses and still get scrutinized.

    • @mayowasworld

      yuppp I feel like the fetishization of 'cleanliness' is rooted in anti blackness because black people have always been heavily questioned on how we clean ourselves. and I think this same logic falls heaviest on people with freeform locs because from a western stand point its associated with being untidy

I love the fact that I can just get up & go without having to worry about my hair. My hair is definitely well taken care of, regardless of me not retwisting. Thankfully, I receive more positive comments than rude. I honestly love my hair & starting locs was the best hair decision I ever made. There’s nothing anyone could say to make me feel differently. My locs are the TOTAL opposite than yours, but my scalp sounds exactly like yours. Recently, I fell into the same trap of going back to traditional shampoo and conditioner after finally realizing that my scalp does NOT want it. After washing my locs and scalp a couple of months ago with the traditional stuff, Immediately my scalp was like WTF are you doing???!! Didn't I tell you after 5 decades I don't want that on me??!! We have to listen to our scalps and hair. As alluded to above, My locs are not freeform (not because I don't want them either. my hair does not want them as I have very fine thin strands). I can only use ACV to wash my scalp.
    Sadly, I've gotten a lot that same ish from freeformers in the past saying that my locs are not locs. Why are we so critical of how we were our hair naturally??? Shouldn't they be glad that we are wearing and embracing our natural hair??? It's a proven fact that all of our hair is not the same, so why in the hell are we supposed to take care of it and wear it in the same way??? Omg, this crap gets on my nerves!

    Why are people with a different types of locs attacking each other and you're liking their comment? I thought you were for people doing what they want with their natural hair. Are you holding free-form locs superior to other locs? That's so judgemental and hypocritical of you to be crying about how people treat you when you're doing it right back. All locks are beautiful. All locs has a certain routine that should be respected. Come on don't be mean.
    If anyone reading this and feel a type of way because of this youtuber, their comment section, or your family. Your loc is beautiful. Her locs are beautiful but don't sub to someone who believes your locs are trash because it's not free form or you don't have 'real' locs. Do you.

    Im in the starting process of my loc journey, started with 2 strand twist. I always knew i wanted something to start with as far as some kind of parting system but i wasn't too concerned about it being manicured or perfect or so called clean, i was ok with & actually preferred having locs that might be different in sizes or shapes, i love when some are pointing up while others point down, & then having random ones going to the sides. I did think id semi freeform to a degress just to keep some kinda parts but i actually don't like the tight retwist look with skinny roots showing straight up scalp with frizzy ends. I dont hate on it but i rather my parts not be visible but there, so im gonna see what happens down the line, right now when i retwist i dont use clip's its not to get or keep tight roots, i twist just to keep parts but let my roots breath no restrictions.
    I do love locs of all kinds but i do love more naturally individually expressive looking locs. Retwisted looks takes away from the individuality that comes with having more unmanicured looking locs. Im not a hater at all but right after i aee people with they retwist where they scalp is just so visible it turns my attention from how their locs looks to how white they scalp is, but when they retwist look fades after a few weeks & it starts to expand at the root thats when i think it looks the best.
    Right now as far as cleaning i do use shampoox mostly more natural based tho, i don't want to conditioner much of at all because its too thick, but ill use oils & essential oils to condition my hair.
    Aleo everyone is different as far as what works for hair washing guidelines. I know some people can go a month or more i certainly cannot go long with hair washing. For me i let my hair & scap decide it will let me know. But if my scalp is itching ima wash it.
    But i agree with this video 100%/, its F'ed up that within the loc community manicured loc people feel the need to talk trash about free from & semi freeform people. Its clearly them pitting others down on a similar path just to make themselves feel better than or superior to. Having or going to a loctician, or regularly getting retwist & having a visible scalp does not make them better, or cleaner, or smarter, or superior, it doesn't mean their hair is healthier or that they are happier. Society still has not completely evolved enough to view people with locs as being just as valid as the whitewashed beauty standards of what is or looks professional. People who get their locs done or retwisted need to come down from that high horse & realize their retwist is still matted up Tangled hair that to most signal ugly the only difference some people see between freefrom & manicured locs is scalpy vs no scalp
