Remember when you'd turn on the radio and hear a song like this and you couldn't get the tune out of your head all day long?

Yes, i surely do,, Not only in my head, but my mom and dads' heads ,too. They couldn't stop singing these great, great songs. My mom loved the bass of Tennesee Ernie Ford, and beautiful songs of Perry Como. lol. As a kid i grew up singing these ,too. Oh so good.

the first time I heard this song was 9 years ago :). It was a song in 7th grade's English book.
5 years after that, I was the first year student at a university, far away from home, I cried when hearing this song :)
Now, I'm a forth year student, have 4 year far away from home, hearing this song make me remember my family with all my love

I am English, but without You tube I probably would have never seen or heard the wonderful group. I would be about the same age as the audience at the time of recording. I look at the snippet of America at that time and think, what a shame , so much has changed, but it has in England as well, its more like a sigh of me getting old !

The composer of this Classic song is Hedy West in 1961. Many singers have covered this song over the years. Type the title, and view those versions on you tube. Hedy West does a live performance of her own song in 1964.

What a time travel feeling one gets watching & hearing this! I really miss when audiences & performers truly united like this without all the hollering, whistling, "waves", etc. & when singers actually could sing & play without lip syncing or lazer light shows, pyrotechnics, & grabbing their crotch! Audiences used to be SO much more polite also, & respected the entertainer, instead of trying to take over the show! One reason of many I MYSELF stopped performing. MISS those sweet days. Great video

If you miss the train I'm on
You will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
A hundred miles, a hundred miles
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
    Lord , I'm one. Lord , I'm two
    Lord , I'm three. Lord , I'm four
Lord , I'm five hundred miles away from home
    Away from home
Lord , I'm five hundred miles away from home
Not a shirt on my back
Not a penny to my name
Lord, I can't go back home this way
    This way,
Lord, I can't go back home this way

It Is Not possible to Even Imagine today on some college campus that the students would even sing along to "Lord I'm One, Lord I'm Two, Lord I'm Three, Lord I'm Four, Lord I'm Five Hundred Miles Away From Home, Lord I Can't go Back Home This a Way..." Just think how serene that moment of collective young hearts, all singing that personal but universal feeling of longing for a place called "...HOME...," ...and the people that love you....

I sang this song on my Farewell in primary school... At that time going to a new school and leaving some friends behind seemed the biggest thing...Till today I finished 2 more schools and a college degree... left home... left home city... left family..left friends to find new ones ..even left the country,, Just cant believe how far every1 has reached..
And not after all these things, this one song brought back all the memories within 3 minutes and makes me happy and sad at the same time...

Story is always the same brother, be it Europe or America or a sweaty mosquito laden Asian or African country, men folk leave home to earn and cherish the desire to go home one day to see the smile on the dear one's faces. Truly a universal song.
