But yeah, these girls rocked it pretty hard for a while..
you both in my opinion are so on the reality of what makes or breaks artistic careers in the past, the relationship between the members was almost always like a glue holding everything together in almost every rock , blues , country possibly a few other genre of musical but in the past. The music and similar arts have changed over some past years and now it has hardly any resemblance with what I learned and worked with in my younger years. The industry has been raped by greedy reps, past talent buyers who could demand anything from whoever came to them looking for a hook , that doesn’t even start to talk about the requirements almost every female that was just understood in the musical , acting , higher end service providers of both services and goods directly involved, etc, etc ! I have been directly involved with music and the music industry since I was around 11-12 years old. I started when I was really young picking up beer bottles after the show or thhe next day if the venue wasn’t booked . I met Sue through a girl who I met when she was in “The Runaways” , that past lady friend has since been married and doing great without being involved with some people thhat most likely will never have a chance to go anywhere . However Sue said a couple weeks ago she still has me near the top of the assistants phone list
This song illustrates one of the Bangles most, IMO, underappreciated strengths. Yes, Susanna became sort of the "face" of the Bangles later, but any one of them could lead a song and the others would provide perfect, harmonious backing vocals. Even though Debbie doesn't get to sing on this one, the lead going between the other three demonstrates it.
Never gonna happen... Females don't play musical instruments these days anymore like this, would be near impossible for 3 or 4 girls who can jam to even be friends and know each other, let alone come together and form a band or even be successful... Hell men don't even really play anymore its sad... Unfortunately its not about the music, talent, creativity or self expression...its ONLY about selling records and greedy dollar bills...

@@djp928 Speaking of playing the tambourine, you should check out Stevie Nicks joining Bob Welch on 'Ebony Eyes'. No one ever had more fun playing a tambourine. There's a clip from a stadium show in '78 and from The Roxy in '81.

They used a drum machine when recording the song. And the drummer didn't get to sing a verse. This led to her quitting the band. (She later rejoined I think.)

She been through it, dealing with divas and a lowlife manager with The Runaways, then playing for various groups, then dealing with more divas and close knit sisters in The Bangles. At the time of this performance, Saturday, 12/13/86, “Walk Like an Egyptian” had just reached No. 1 on the Hot 100! In the newly published issue of Billboard magazine, for the week ending 12/20/86, it became the first No. 1 by an all female band. The Go-Go’s had gotten to No. 2 with “We Got the Beat” in 1982, but the Bangles were the first to go all the way. And to date, the only other No. 1 by a female band has been “Eternal Flame” by ... you know who. That Bangles ballad spent the week ending 4/1/89 at the top.
Just curious - has anyone has checked with Gen Z to see if this is offensive to Egyptians? Not only that, but this is a song by an all-girl group that doesn't make one single reference in "celebration" of their lady parts. Perhaps we will have to change the lyrics to "WAP like an Egyptian" to spare The Bangles from possible cancelation.
I was literally just thinking the exact same thing. The total role reversal of it all. Those guys in the front row was totally awestruck. It's pretty awesome. Pretty much every all-girl band today is self-consciously trying NOT to appeal to men, mostly in order to prove some kind of feminist street cred.
I wrote this in several places, but imho this is the summary of girlsband through time 80s "Being in love is awesome" 90s "Being in love is rebelious" 00s "Being in love sucks" 10s "Who needs to be in love ?" And for the 20s Im predicting "Being in love is sexist"
Like a lot of people ,.. gotta love Micki/Michael Steele - Bass Player,.. Vicki & Debbie Peterson & Susanna Hoffs too Wish they had this Concert on DVD & CD - That would Be a BIG SELLER. Also Watch Micki Crack a BIG Smile when some guy throws a shirt to her and it ends up going right on the Mic Stand :-) Gotta Love That Split in her Skirt - Clean up to her Hip :-)
I had an egyptian friend that heard this song and was pissed he said "where in the hell did they get that idea that egyptians walk like this?" I said "you have never seen hierglyphics? thats the egyptian they were talking about.
Ahhhhh!!!? The Syria Mosque. Many great concerts there. Even saw Sam Kinnison there. Mmmmm!! My ass is still there somewhere. Darn it Sam, see what You made me do from laughing so hard!!!!
I like Micki's way of Dancing - sliding her feet sort of, and in another song at this concert her and Susanna team up playing Close Side by Side - In the song Return Post
It really doesn't matter which bits of this are mimed or prerecorded or whether some guys in the audience are there to "drool". This is a fucking masterpiece. It's a song that transcended everything and ironically is one of those tracks that feels like it has always existed in the human psyche and The Bangles just excavated it. Utterly brilliant.
The song was written entirely (lyrics and music both) by a man named Liam Sternberg. He deserves mention if we’re talking about how legendary this song is. Not to take anything away from the Bangles performance of it, but if anyone is to be credited with excavating a song that has always existed in the human psyche, it’s Liam.
Lord knows I spilled a ton of seed in my teens lusting over Susanna Hoffs. In my eyes, she was without question the sexiest woman I'd ever seen in my life.
That's why my first girlfriend ever - god may bless her soul - looked pretty much exactly like Susanna Hoffs. She even was just as tiny (but she wore higher heels). :-D ... and BTW: Hoffs still looks just as gorgeous (if not more) today in 2020.
goosebumps. twice during this song/video. realizing i hated this song when this came out and my brother had it on endless repeats. guess he was right with this one ;-)
"Incredible"????Who was playing the drums????Certainly not the "drummer". Super Fake band. Dumbass horny guys would couldn't get laid in a whorehouse like this "band".
PC USER no idea who they are, I just recognize the song from the credits of Jojo’s, but I do know that being really relentlessly negative is kinda annoying
Time Mark 2:31 of the video is where you could fall in Love with Susanna Hoffs. That smile and those EYES!!! In 1986 there were 20 guys in the dorm lounge waiting for that moment in the video when she looked at you!!!!
I've always loved how rocked out this performance is. Lead guitarist Vicki Peterson especially makes it that way. The Bangles' hit Simon & Garfunkel cover "Hazy Shade of Winter" is another of their great straight-ahead rock tracks that they also sound awesome doing live.
It's unfortunate that the record producer didn't like Debbi's singing and cut her role out of the song. In another video Debbi discusses how she has horrible memories of WLAE and it's the band's least favorite.
This song rocks hard. The drums... the monotone chords. The restraint, the dynamics... the mixture of melody and chaos. I reckon the Bangles listened to Sonic Youth... Always remember them as a catchy pop group. Never realized til now how much power and talent they had.
They are still great live (even w/o Michael Steele). Saw them last year in Atlanta with my daughter and going with my wife on 8/24 in Annapolis, MD. They play a lot of their old stuff live now, like Real World. That is an awesome song. Check it out.
This song promotes stereotypes such as cops in donut shops, blonde waitresses (too dumb for other jobs), and school kids sick of books. If I was a blonde female police officer who likes to read, I'de be pretty offended. If I was Egyptian, I'de be ok with this cultural appropriation. "Everyone should walk like me", I would think to myself.
The Bangles: Just one reason why the 80's were totally awesome.

Interesting perspective of an all-girl band performing in front of GUYS who are drooling over them... Coo.
I wrote this in several places, but imho this is the summary of girlsband through time
80s "Being in love is awesome"
90s "Being in love is rebelious"
00s "Being in love sucks"
10s "Who needs to be in love ?"
And for the 20s Im predicting "Being in love is sexist"
@@KISSbestfan Sadly, you're probably right.
I'm drooling too :-D
@@saturninojosesuarezquintan9424 Quien no lo haría con estas bellas y talentosas mujeres, hermosuras.
Are you sure that is a shirt? :-D
Daryl Hansen It is available on DVD
They were SO good Live!
"Live".
has been widely documented that they played their own instruments.
plus its like 4 chords.
*****
Yes, especially the Tambourine is super live.
yeah if you go to a concert for live tambourine playing, that is your own perilous journey pal.
I had an egyptian friend that heard this song and was pissed he said "where in the hell did they get that idea that egyptians walk like this?" I said "you have never seen hierglyphics? thats the egyptian they were talking about.
@Andres Porras damn
@Andres Porras
Many Egyptians seem have the misconception that they're smarter than they really are.
That crowd is rightly losing their shit over it.
PhysicsParty probably they don’t care about the song they perform only to see the bangles beauty
And Hoffs bit is steaming
@@johnsonjohnson429 yeah they are indeed.
Po1itica11yNcorrect Not many come so close to perfection to me.
That's why my first girlfriend ever - god may bless her soul - looked pretty much exactly like Susanna Hoffs. She even was just as tiny (but she wore higher heels). :-D
... and BTW: Hoffs still looks just as gorgeous (if not more) today in 2020.
goosebumps. twice during this song/video. realizing i hated this song when this came out and my brother had it on endless repeats. guess he was right with this one ;-)
Michael Steele's voice. awesome.
Thump that Ax Ms. Steele! All the way from Memphis, Tn., Great Job Ms. Steele!
WOW! This performance was really good! I'd no idea they were this good live. Rock & Roll girls!! WOO HOO!!
Everyone's drooling over Susanna Hoffs but I'm here for Vicki Peterson
Damn girls you rocked it. Had massive crush of every band member when I was in high school back in 80's.
I don't feel that they ever got the credit for what incredible musicians they were.
They were a fairly tight foursome alright and very dynamic on stage. I don't know about incredible, but they certainly very good musicians.
Incredible is reaching, competent is more like it.
I don't think they realize how awesome they are!
"Incredible"????Who was playing the drums????Certainly not the "drummer". Super Fake band. Dumbass horny guys would couldn't get laid in a whorehouse like this "band".
They're playing over a backing track of the song
Theses babes KNOCK me OUT !!! having so much FUN ! how brilliant .......thanks Bangles + thanks for UTUBE !!!
2:11 I love that bass part
THE BOB DUNCAN EXPIRIENCE BADASS PROFILE PICTURE
Rock 'n' roll ladies of the eighties really knew how to rock!
Correction they only knew how to act and look good acting they were el fake o
PC USER come on man, let people enjoy things
CCuppy lmfao feel the butthurt your whole life’s been a facade 🤣🤣🤣
PC USER no idea who they are, I just recognize the song from the credits of Jojo’s, but I do know that being really relentlessly negative is kinda annoying
@@justaman5418 Being butthurt is tight!
Time Mark 2:31 of the video is where you could fall in Love with Susanna Hoffs. That smile and those EYES!!! In 1986 there were 20 guys in the dorm lounge waiting for that moment in the video when she looked at you!!!!
I'm a pure rock guy - but Bangles are great. Fun, way talented and make infectious music and add to it by their performances. Love these ladies.
I've always loved how rocked out this performance is. Lead guitarist Vicki Peterson especially makes it that way. The Bangles' hit Simon & Garfunkel cover "Hazy Shade of Winter" is another of their great straight-ahead rock tracks that they also sound awesome doing live.
Oh weh OH!! If this is an example of how a Bangles concert was - wow!! I am duly impressed!
Best thing: no one has an phones they are holding up recording it...they are actually enjoying the moment!
Life was better back then.
@@gandolfogeraci8368 We have really fucked things up for ourselves.
I love how they take turns singing... It's cute
It's unfortunate that the record producer didn't like Debbi's singing and cut her role out of the song. In another video Debbi discusses how she has horrible memories of WLAE and it's the band's least favorite.
I love that UA-cam’s algorithm mainly recommends Jojo videos from this because of all of us savage Jojo fans
Hey nice to see you here Cameron
I would have loved to be in the first row! The estrogen would have driven me crazy!
Susana Hoffs is my dream !!!
Even got her guitar !
Is it really 30 years ago ? I can´t believe it. Are the girls still making music ?
Dam this is some Great Talent...👌
These Women Beautiful all Natural!
I remember my Mom & aunts playing this when I was a Kid Loving it!🔥👈👏👏
This live version is just on another level. It must have been great to be at that concert.
Nothing better than a beautaful woman that can play a guitar!!!!!
Where is this beautiful woman at ? Between all.of them it still wont make a 10 sorry

This song rocks hard. The drums... the monotone chords. The restraint, the dynamics... the mixture of melody and chaos. I reckon the Bangles listened to Sonic Youth... Always remember them as a catchy pop group. Never realized til now how much power and talent they had.
the drums…lol. which band member do you think is playing the tambourine? note the empty drumset
This is the only true live version I could find on UA-cam. They are actually singing this live. Sweet.
Another live version from the 80s is from the Late Show with Joan Rivers.
+Mainerelics ok thanks I'll check it out.
+Mainerelics Thanks for telling me about that. Interviews and 2 songs. Was great... and live!
They are still great live (even w/o Michael Steele). Saw them last year in Atlanta with my daughter and going with my wife on 8/24 in Annapolis, MD. They play a lot of their old stuff live now, like Real World. That is an awesome song. Check it out.
Mainerelics Michael made a huge difference in the sound positively
Awwww Michael is really cute trying to suppress the laugh!
who?
@@RockNRoller66 Michael Steele, the bassist
This song promotes stereotypes such as cops in donut shops, blonde waitresses (too dumb for other jobs), and school kids sick of books. If I was a blonde female police officer who likes to read, I'de be pretty offended. If I was Egyptian, I'de be ok with this cultural appropriation. "Everyone should walk like me", I would think to myself.
1986, I was in the army and I´ve heard this song very first time. I had no idea about the band, but i like that. It was love on first sight :-)
That crowd was my people, nerdy young good looking preppy peeps not a care in the world, having fun, sweating in sweat shirts, mid 80's dance moves
brad lafferty and NO PHONES to distract them
