And their funeral march was so tragic...
@@MrDoBerek ... and adorable. XD
Yeah I agree as well.
I know right.
I have a little cast metal one that I found at a flea market for 25¢! I had no idea what it was from for the longest time. 😂
Catwoman in _Batman Returns_ has probably the best-presented origin story of any costumed character in any Hollywood superhero movie. We are told absolutely nothing, and we understand absolutely everything.
Well said!
Don't understand why so many people dislike the Catwoman solo movie.
I mean, it wasn't a total blockbuster but it was a solid movie and Halle Berry is fucking HOT in that outfit.
@@LeBoomStudios The best thing about that solo movie was that Halle Berry trained a lot to move really cat like and that they put this into the movie in several scenes including fights. Apart from that it was quite a trashy flick.
@@elfsieben1450 Yeah, sometimes the actors really give it their best but their performance is getting drowned by crappy writing and directing.
@@LeBoomStudios Or editing during postproduction fucks up anything they tried to express, by breaking/changing/removing character arcs, consistency, context, continuity, pivotal plot points/turning points in a character's defining moments, development or origin. So many things can go wrong in a movie, and only a part of it is really down to the actors, yet they are the face(s) of the movie and catch the biggest part of the blame if things go bad.
No matter the movie, Alfred is always perfectly cast.
Completely agree!
I don't know, I'm been a bit weirded out by the string of cockney-Alfreds we've had lately.
Movie nothing, No matter what adaptation, Alfred is always perfectly cast. I can't think of a singular movie, show, or game that hasn't had an Alfred that wasn't amazing.
Batman vs Superman Alfred was pretty bad. Way too young.
Omer Pockard still wasn’t bad. Just not enough screen time
DANNY DEVITO did a spot on impression of a NYC landlord.

@@mariapdr3261 i think maybe it has to do with the radioactive waste on the sewers (the subplot about Max Shrieck of course)
I love watching this movie during Christmas. Everyone talks about Die Hard being a Christmas movie, but Batman Returns also needs to be added to that list.
How can he scratch a CD, you wonder? Because he's BATMAN
I wanna know his secret identity... 🤩
@@barbarajoseph-adam8337 If only there were some sort of clue.
You could actually do this with a CDJ, lol.
The Batman Returns was filmed during a period in time when Hollywood didn't seem to understand the proper care and handling of CDs. The current version of that is Hollywood thinking USB drives solve everything.
oh, it's definitely scratched after that.
*Christopher Walken Noises*
Thanks for making me spit my drink everywhere 😂😂😂😂

I appreciated the "c'mahn!" in there too haha
IKR, ROFLMAO!!

Michelle KILLED this role, I don't see anyone else touching what she did with this character...and the costume is still my favorite!

@@ShakaZ3D Here's some pearls to clutch.
I agree!!!!
Eh, she was too crazy for the character and that suit was way too stupid IMO (even Michelle didn't like it). Nothing like the proper Selena 1993 comic role as an international thief. Looks more like the makers of the "Batman Returns" took the idea of Selena being a dominatrix from the 1987 "Batman: Year One" comic story.
Mohd Amerul Aidil Anne was a more comic accurate Selina Kyle/Catwoman though. Both are really great.
"Why is there always someone who brings eggs and tomatoes to a speech?"

Not getting into "best" Batman movie, but best Batman scene is the "mistletoe" segment of this movie - tragic, bittersweet, superbly performed, excellent dialogue. The price of being superheroes, all in a few words.
Indeed.
This movie still has by far the sexiest villain in movie history.
...of course, I'm talking about Danny DeVito.

It has been a yuge incident. Believe me.
When I was younger that version of penguin use to give me nightmares 😂😂😂
Caleb Perkins That was a perfectly reasonable reaction.
Gave me woody
Too bad
Sometimes I find Danny DeVito hit and miss in his performances--pitch perfect in one role, not a serious enough actor in another--and so on. But he is SO GOOD as the penguin! He takes that ABSURD back story and congenital flippers the script gives him chews it right up and spits it back out in our faces with terrifying believability! So many other actors would have ended up looking like fools, but DeVito NAILED IT.

Also the best looking Catwoman period.
You know, Michelle Pfeiffer and Sean Young were disappointed that neither of them were cast in the Catwoman spinoff film. Fair to say they dodged a bullet on THAT one.
That movie was in development hell for a decade. Had they been in a Catwoman solo movie, it's entirely possible it would have been an entirely different movie.
When you give DC material to some weird/abstract European director you're up for a disaster.
@@silvervalleystudios2486 very true.
Walken's son actor doing a Walken impression KILLED ME. I love you guys.

"Christopher Walken Noises" was hilarious, and a very subtle impression of Morgan Freeman that I almost missed
The dude who played Walken’s son also played Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.
@@smittyvanbonjohnson He also played Zangief in the Street Fighter movie, and would have made a fantastic Lobo -- as the short film on UA-cam proved.
DeVito does not get enough credit for his performance in this. There are some genuine moments of pathos, but they are obviously overshadowed by the sheer amount of nasty energy he puts into the role. He's gross in every facet, yet you really just can't not watch him. I can't think of another actor that could have pulled Burton's version of Cobblepot off so well.
Yeah he was great
Yeah, easily the most viscerally disturbing comic book villain to this day.
Thoroughly agree.

BucklingSwashes De Vito was tremendous in this. He's naive, and at the same time a calculating mastermind. He's juvenile, and at the same time incredibly sensitive. He's unashamedly gross, and at the same time infinitely watchable. It's my favourite version of The Penguin and it's acted perfectly.
Will never not call this The Dark Knightmare Before Christmas now.
My favorite Batman movie. Catwoman is fantastic here, Michelle Pfeiffer doesn't get enough credit for this
Sidney Prescott I agree but it’s also my favorite superhero movie
Watch it every Christmas, it's a classic!
It's always been my favorite superhero movie.
Oh Contraire; I gave her maximum credits and put her at the top of the class 😊

We are waiting to see how Zoey Kravitz will do!
Won't lie, I love this film primarily for Michelle Pfffffffer's Catwoman!
Hell yeah. She brought an awesome erotic element to the film. Wont see that in today's superhero movies.
I always thought that Batman Returns never got the respect it deserves. I can understand some of the complaints from parents about how dark it was; but frankly, it's what made the movie so good. I still wish that we could have gotten to see more of what Burton had in store for franchise.
my parents loved it. They were more concerned with how obsessed I immediatley became with Chrisopher Walken after watching it
lol
That's so weird that you say that.
Far from finding it "too dark", I was always struck by how wacky and silly and goofy it was. Deliberately so.
Please say: "Michelle Pfeiffer is best Catwoman"
Now I've got "Face to Face" by Siouxsie and the Banshees stuck in my head.
I LOVE this movie. Its pretty depressing though. Great villains, great acting, great pacing. In the end nobody comes out a winner.
That's so weird that you say that.
Far from finding it "too depressing", I was always struck by how deliberately campy and silly it was.
"Who thought that Selina had a brain to damage. Bottom line, she tries to blackmail me, I'll drop her from a higher window."
The first two Batman movies (by Burton) really do have fantastic lineups for their cast. Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Danny DeVito as the Penguin, Michel Pfeiffer as the Catwoman, Christoper Walken as Max Shreck etc. And they all do such great work. Really helps to bring Tim Burton's unique dark, comic book style to the Gotham City environment of the Batman Universe. For me they will always be the best film adaptations, even surpassing the Christian Bale era trilogy.
To be fair that slow-dancing scene with Wayne and Kyle is AWESOME. When they realize each other's secret identity... so good!
“Were penguins always this... Nasty? Did Morgan freeman lie to us?”

This week's trailer humorously and effectively points out how Batman Returns is a strange, yet oddly alluring combination of many elements present in the heavily (and now tritely) criticized Schumacher era. Although the Schumacher films cranked those elements up to 11 for the worse, it's interesting to see the seeds of where WB was planning on taking the franchise in a film ostensibly considered drastically different than the Schumacher films.
Question for Honest Commentary : It's clear Burton was given more freedom from the studio on Batman Returns than on Batman '89 which, as you point out in the trailer, results in a kinkier, more violent, and macabre Batman film. Although you say in jest that it "deviates from the source material," do you think Burton's unique auteur take in Returns is an affective deviation or is it too singular and odd to be considered one of the better Batman films of all time?
Love the work you do. Best film critics on the net.
