What really creeps me out is that Bill actually decided to write down his plans and left it somewhere Mabel would have eventually found. He knew she would find the note and by then he intended to have thrown Dipper's body off the water tower so she would have been devastated and then found the note that said Bill was the one in control. It was him bragging and attempting to torment Mabel. Its a chilling thought and I'm glad it was put in the journal, also glad it was not in the episode itself as it would have ruined a bit of Bill's act by plain out stating his intention.
You left out one little bit bill probably wrote that before he found out where the journal was so if things went his way he would've probably done it during mable's show and she would've thought that it was her fault because she ignored him when he wanted her help adding the cherry on top of the icecream of mable's torment over her brother's murder
i remember watching this episode and being like: "bill is totally going to abuse that body until it breaks" so i kinda expected him to ruin it. the water tower bit just makes sense
I have a theory for the part when the laptop starts counting down. Dipper closes closes eyes right before the laptop started counting down, so what if he fell asleep and Bill was just projecting the count down into Dippers nightmare so he would make a deal with him?
That would actually make some sense actually cause no computer would have that type of system inside of it and it would be smart idea to trick Dipper to give Bill the computer.
I'm not sure when or in what but according to the gravity falls wiki(I think) it was actually confirmed that the laptop never had any failsafe to delete the files and that Bill did pull Dipper into a dream so he could fake the countdown to put pressure on him. So yeah, good observation. EDIT: Checked the wiki and it wasn't there but I know there is confirmation about this somewhere. Guess where I saw it is yet another mystery for the fan base to figure out.
Omg I’ve been saying this for years! Totally agree. It makes so much since. Like i get it’s a cartoon but it could also explain why the count down goes down soo fast with barely any dialogue in between the two of them Cause it was a “dream” and in dreams things like that are wonky. Bill was manipulating the time stamps just to have Dipper feel like he was running out of time and pressure him into making the deal, when genuinely there was no threat to begin with.

People ignore Mabel's sacrifice in this episode because at the end Mabel "dodged a bullet", but then claim Dipper giving up his job at the pool in "The Deep End" was a big sacrifice even though it turns out Wendy (the only reason he wanted the job in the first place) had already been fired shortly before he was.
I honestly forget how dark this show is sometimes. It’s kind of wild how much didn’t make it into the final series. This show really helped pave the way for some of the more intense violence in other Disney shows.

Open thinking about how annoying the backlash against Mabel must have been for Alex given she is based on his twin sister who going by interviews is clearly one of the most important people in his life
She might be based off his sister but that doesn't mean her entire personality is, there's probably a few parts added on to give it a more cartoony feeling. Then again yeah that was probably a bit sad

Honestly, I’m surprised that Dipper didn’t suffer serious permanent damage. I mean there’s definitely at least a little scarring from the forks, seems like Dipper honestly got pretty lucky.
Go to the scene where Bipper gets in the car to go to the talent show, when the window goes up after talking with ghost dipper you can see what bipper looks like to the outside world through the car windows glass
Oh yeah, I read that bit! My first thought was “that makes a lot of sense actually” he’s a sadistic madman so I was surprised in the show that he didn’t at least imply he was gonna do some REAL bad self harm. Like, walking off with a decent sized knife and looking back to dippers ghost form with a smile.
I love bill tbh. Dipper is my favorite character, bill my second. That's what made sock opera my favorite episode of the series besides the weirdmagendon finale episodes. I found the "Bipper form" to be awesome, and I use quotes from that episode on a daily basis. I'm so glad this fandom is still alive and functioning :)
I read the book and found this, it’s always disturbed me. That is like, super messed up! I can’t believe Disney even allowed the book, but I’m so glad they did!
Alex was already a master of getting around censors with Disney! (Hell he had to fight tooth and nail for a nose bleed. A *_nosebleed._*) With the physical, official journal, he really went all out with the darker stuff, and I love it!
Pain is hilarious! and since "Bipper" is always smiling we can imagine that Bill is always smiling which makes him that much more creepy and you can hear it in his voice as well just hear your voice between frowning and smiling and you'll see what I mean and with his attitude he tries to play it off as a friend, a deal maker, a harmless little bet before moving off to the next stages of his twisted plans

A popular theory is that he either didn't get entirely erased and is lingering in Stanly's mind or, and this one is my favourite just for the whackyness, he reincarnated as Stanely, meaning he would live in a time-loop. The other theory is that whoever touches the hand of the Bill statue could make a deal with him, allowing him a vessel.
Still love bill. He’s a mysterious character, he has a...sometimes morbid sense of humor, and he’s a show man. He was even originally supposed to preform a song at the beginning of weirdmegeton!
Honestly this episode is one of my favourite episode mostly because of Bill Cipher he is a powerhouse in this episode; as well as a villain. Disney has a great line of villains in the rose gallery of films and TV shows but none of which are actual demons unless you’ve seen Fantasia and then you’ve seen that big scary guy. And everything Bill does and wishes to do is terrifying. When the show started I was entering college, and the show was fantastic it intrigued me not just a person as a kid at heart but also the adult that I am. The show has mysterious and macabre feel and it was so cool and exciting. In those words I can also say to describe this episode I have never seen a Disney villain possess another character before, granted eventuallyin other shows that did happen (Toffee and Magica) but Bill was the first. He was so psychotic, for when he said pain is hilarious and stating that he’s actually going to throw a child’s body to its death is terrifying. Even in my 20s watching him he gave me goosebumps, watching his possessed body smiling at you his eyes glowing and walking towards you slowly his chilling. Which rewards this episode to be such a highlight I am someone else who loves that edge just like you dude I enjoy that edgy Gothic scary stuff to as well as lightheartedness. It was disappointing that there wasn’t a lot of people analyzing and talking about the show back then having UA-cam channels like this I mean I go on about how scary Bill was. I remember you saying how the overlord in the owl House series is the darkest Disney villain but for me it’s Bill who has that title as Disney’s most dark and powerful Disney villains heck if he had to go against all of them he would win I have my money on him. He is both terrifying and impressive with his crazy demonic powers and cunning and clever mind, to me he is the joker of Disney villains for how much he loves chaos and traumatizing others . Because he traumatize me and I love it.
So the Dipper killing hosts bit was interesting to me I've heard from that people who astral project (like from Insidious) that the only way to permanently stay in the astral plane is for your physical body to die. I think that's what Bill was referring to when he talked about throwing Dipper's body off the water tower. He would kill him to permanently trap him in the mind 'scape, aka the astral plane. So Dipper would've been stuck there forever as a spirit
I don't get why people claims that Mabel is consequences-free or never grew as a character. In this episode, She realized the error of her ways, she felt responsible for what happened to Dipper when Bill taunted her about saving him then she ended up doing the right thing by destroying her own play knowing that she wouldn't be able to date Gabe. She apologized to Dipper directly and apologized to him again in Jornal 3 when she found the note. In s2 ep1, she could have simply escaped with others leaving Dipper and Stan die but no she remained with them until she helped them defeat the zombies. The thing is I am not saying she is an angel or Dipper is a bad brother, She has selfish moments like him and just like him, she also end up doing the right thing and this is not the ONLY episode where she ever realizes the error of her ways. In the hand that rocks Mabel : she realized that it was a mistake to let Dipper break out for her and the moment she saw Gideon attack him, she rushed to save him and tricked Gideon to do so. In s2 ep2, she realized how wrong she was and ended up saving Dipper and Wendy then apologized to him. In s1 ep1, she saved her brother and herself by defeating the gnomes, she realized she was responsible for all what happened then apologized to him. And no one says "oh she only dodged a bullet, that sacrifice wasn't meaningful and she is terrible", no that sacrifice was meaningful as she saved her brother's life and this is not the only time where she ever save/sacrifice for Dipper and others.
Ironically enough, I'm watching Gravity Falls for the first time and I was literally halfway through watching "Sock Opera" when this notification popped up XD.
In thinking about the notion of Bill wanting to throw Dipper’s body off of the water tower, I think that the reason that he wanted to do that was to brake apart the summoning circle that could either destroy him or send him back to where he came from. All he would need to do to destroy that circle would be to get rid of one of the pieces and then that method of getting rid of him wouldn’t work. In addition to that maybe Bill would find it funny in a very mean-spirited type of way that Dipper’s mind was now trapped in the mind scape.
I've decided me and my kids are going to watch Gravity falls together when i'm old enough to get kids, purely because it's such a incredible show and I hope people talk about forever.
I kind of feel like raising the stakes that much would make make Mabel seem like an idiot to even briefly consider letting Bill get away with this assuming Mabel knows Bill's plan

(No ship intended--) I really wish Bipper made another appearance in Gravity Falls, maybe Bill could have had a better chance at spreading madness if he held Dippers body hostage. Plus we probably could have gotten a real reaction out of Stan, Ford especially and a possible serious reaction out of Mabel. Considering she's seen him like that before. qwq
I doubt he would keep possessing a body for that reason, Bill is weakest when he's in the mindscape of a person. He wouldn't want to be weak, if he ever is going to keep the body it may be because he needs a job done.
Another thing that needs to be mentioned about sock opera- In the Mabel vs Bipper fight, Bill is forcibly thrust out of Dipper's body. Meaning that there is now no soul in Dipper's body. So if Dipper had been fighting Mabel instead of Bill, Mabel would have accidentally KILLED her brother.
Gravity Falls Theory: Bill is still possessing Dipper Pines because he never stopped the deal, so maybe that’s why she found the note on the ground because Bill Cipher possessed him and made him write it.
The goggles he was wearing obviously. Blending literally never takes those things off so he used him to trick Mabel, because she clearly saw the eyes once Bill took the glasses off
A: Goggles. But everyone’s already pointed that out. B: You’ve gotta look really hard to see the yellow eyes. Even if Blendin wasn’t wearing goggles, they would look like normal eyes
The worst part is: Everyone would have believed it. Well, not Mabel of course (I hope)... and probaly not Stanly either since he sees Stanford in Dipper and never thought that he was delusional... I'm wondering what Wendy's reaction would be.
With Dipper having the know-how of Bill throwing his body off of the water tower, it might not have made for a better episode, but Dipper’s reaction would’ve been very funny.
Notice how bill does not call the twins their names and just calls them by what there are wearing in fact I think he calls everyone by what they are wearing
I seriously don't understand the backlash and general dislike against Mabel. She's 12. She's a kid and she gets caught up in her own thoughts. It's also implied that she's on the spectrum and it can be difficult for people who are to disengage from their thoughts when they're hyperfocusing on something. Also Dipped is just as bad as her, if not worse. He makes a lot of selfish decisions that involve trying to get Wendy, who is already In a relationship, and he constantly lords over Mabel that he's smarter than her and leaves her out of all the stuff he does with Ford. Both characters have their good and bad points but I for one absolutely adore Mabel and consider her my spirit animal.
How sad that most people don't understand the case like you do. But he wouldn't abandon her if he takes the apprenticeship. However he would have been isolated like Ford doing research most of the time. Ford should have at least searched for Stan while he was in a break after the project incident. He used to think that research is more important than Family and that explains what I mentioned above. They claim that she is consequences-free or never grew as a character. No she grew as a character and faces the consequences like other characters. She does show remorse for her actions not only in one or two episodes.(in Sock opera, journal 3 and dungeons dungeons and more dungeons.) Right pal?
I once had some reservations on Mable's character but after watching the video and looking back on Sock Opera itself. I agree with your take on the episode and character analysis.

I read the book and found this, it’s always disturbed me. That is like, super messed up! I can’t believe Disney even allowed the book, but I’m so glad they did!
Alex was already a master of getting around censors with Disney! (Hell he had to fight tooth and nail for a nose bleed. A *_nosebleed._*)
With the physical, official journal, he really went all out with the darker stuff, and I love it!

and since "Bipper" is always smiling we can imagine that Bill is always smiling which makes him that much more creepy and you can hear it in his voice as well

and with his attitude
he tries to play it off as a friend, a deal maker, a harmless little bet before moving off to the next stages of his twisted plans

Edit: Bill’s deal was to give Dipper the password to computer right? Bill never really fulfilled his end of the deal. So Bill can possess Dipper at anytime, right? Because now the deal is open ended. And Bill has been brought back due to the axolotl. If Dipper goes back to Gravity Falls, Bill has a vessel that he can still use. Crap...
Now that is an origibal take on the prophecy. Most have agreed on one of two theories but this is a new one.

@@varianzero7469 Well... it's more than two and a half. We know that Bill will appear in a new form at some different point in time than when he was most active. A popular theory is that he either didn't get entirely erased and is lingering in Stanly's mind or, and this one is my favourite just for the whackyness, he reincarnated as Stanely, meaning he would live in a time-loop. The other theory is that whoever touches the hand of the Bill statue could make a deal with him, allowing him a vessel.

Still love bill. He’s a mysterious character, he has a...sometimes morbid sense of humor, and he’s a show man. He was even originally supposed to preform a song at the beginning of weirdmegeton!
Honestly this episode is one of my favourite episode mostly because of Bill Cipher he is a powerhouse in this episode; as well as a villain. Disney has a great line of villains in the rose gallery of films and TV shows but none of which are actual demons unless you’ve seen Fantasia and then you’ve seen that big scary guy. And everything Bill does and wishes to do is terrifying. When the show started I was entering college, and the show was fantastic it intrigued me not just a person as a kid at heart but also the adult that I am. The show has mysterious and macabre feel and it was so cool and exciting. In those words I can also say to describe this episode I have never seen a Disney villain possess another character before, granted eventuallyin other shows that did happen (Toffee and Magica) but Bill was the first. He was so psychotic, for when he said pain is hilarious and stating that he’s actually going to throw a child’s body to its death is terrifying. Even in my 20s watching him he gave me goosebumps, watching his possessed body smiling at you his eyes glowing and walking towards you slowly his chilling. Which rewards this episode to be such a highlight I am someone else who loves that edge just like you dude I enjoy that edgy Gothic scary stuff to as well as lightheartedness. It was disappointing that there wasn’t a lot of people analyzing and talking about the show back then having UA-cam channels like this I mean I go on about how scary Bill was. I remember you saying how the overlord in the owl House series is the darkest Disney villain but for me it’s Bill who has that title as Disney’s most dark and powerful Disney villains heck if he had to go against all of them he would win I have my money on him. He is both terrifying and impressive with his crazy demonic powers and cunning and clever mind, to me he is the joker of Disney villains for how much he loves chaos and traumatizing others . Because he traumatize me and I love it.

I've heard from that people who astral project (like from Insidious) that the only way to permanently stay in the astral plane is for your physical body to die. I think that's what Bill was referring to when he talked about throwing Dipper's body off the water tower. He would kill him to permanently trap him in the mind 'scape, aka the astral plane. So Dipper would've been stuck there forever as a spirit

This really shows how smart Mabel can be
I don't get why people claims that Mabel is consequences-free or never grew as a character.
In this episode, She realized the error of her ways, she felt responsible for what happened to Dipper when Bill taunted her about saving him then she ended up doing the right thing by destroying her own play knowing that she wouldn't be able to date Gabe.
She apologized to Dipper directly and apologized to him again in Jornal 3 when she found the note.
In s2 ep1, she could have simply escaped with others leaving Dipper and Stan die but no she remained with them until she helped them defeat the zombies.
The thing is I am not saying she is an angel or Dipper is a bad brother, She has selfish moments like him and just like him, she also end up doing the right thing and this is not the ONLY episode where she ever realizes the error of her ways.
In the hand that rocks Mabel : she realized that it was a mistake to let Dipper break out for her and the moment she saw Gideon attack him, she rushed to save him and tricked Gideon to do so.
In s2 ep2, she realized how wrong she was and ended up saving Dipper and Wendy then apologized to him.
In s1 ep1, she saved her brother and herself by defeating the gnomes, she realized she was responsible for all what happened then apologized to him.
And no one says "oh she only dodged a bullet, that sacrifice wasn't meaningful and she is terrible", no that sacrifice was meaningful as she saved her brother's life and this is not the only time where she ever save/sacrifice for Dipper and others.

I was OBSESSED with this episode when it came out!
One of the most memorable episodes of a show for me in my life.
In thinking about the notion of Bill wanting to throw Dipper’s body off of the water tower, I think that the reason that he wanted to do that was to brake apart the summoning circle that could either destroy him or send him back to where he came from. All he would need to do to destroy that circle would be to get rid of one of the pieces and then that method of getting rid of him wouldn’t work. In addition to that maybe Bill would find it funny in a very mean-spirited type of way that Dipper’s mind was now trapped in the mind scape.
I've decided me and my kids are going to watch Gravity falls together when i'm old enough to get kids, purely because it's such a incredible show and I hope people talk about forever.
I thought I couldn't love Bill more but duuuuuude he had no limits omg
I kind of feel like raising the stakes that much would make make Mabel seem like an idiot to even briefly consider letting Bill get away with this assuming Mabel knows Bill's plan

I really wish Bipper made another appearance in Gravity Falls, maybe Bill could have had a better chance at spreading madness if he held Dippers body hostage. Plus we probably could have gotten a real reaction out of Stan, Ford especially and a possible serious reaction out of Mabel. Considering she's seen him like that before.

I was expecting if bill won he would go to the bipper (bad end friends) route and permanently possessing dipper for both the pleasure and pain
I doubt he would keep possessing a body for that reason, Bill is weakest when he's in the mindscape of a person. He wouldn't want to be weak, if he ever is going to keep the body it may be because he needs a job done.
Gravity falls is pretty dark if you think too much about it and I love that

Another thing that needs to be mentioned about sock opera-
In the Mabel vs Bipper fight, Bill is forcibly thrust out of Dipper's body. Meaning that there is now no soul in Dipper's body. So if Dipper had been fighting Mabel instead of Bill, Mabel would have accidentally KILLED her brother.
It’s also important to add that dipper technically died for a few seconds when bill was forcefully removed from dippers body

I think he is a good villain but not the greatest villain of all.
I guess there is some actual smartness in mabel....
I seriously don't understand the backlash and general dislike against Mabel. She's 12. She's a kid and she gets caught up in her own thoughts. It's also implied that she's on the spectrum and it can be difficult for people who are to disengage from their thoughts when they're hyperfocusing on something. Also Dipped is just as bad as her, if not worse. He makes a lot of selfish decisions that involve trying to get Wendy, who is already In a relationship, and he constantly lords over Mabel that he's smarter than her and leaves her out of all the stuff he does with Ford. Both characters have their good and bad points but I for one absolutely adore Mabel and consider her my spirit animal.

However he would have been isolated like Ford doing research most of the time.
Ford should have at least searched for Stan while he was in a break after the project incident.
