Text: Traditional / Music: Robert Lowry
    Lyrics:
My life flows on in endless song above earth's lamentation.
I hear the real, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation.
No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that rock, I’m clinging
Since love prevails in heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing?
While though the tempest round me roars, I know the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness round me close, songs in the night it giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that rock, I’m clinging
Since love prevails in heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing?
I Lift my eyes. The cloud grows thin; I see the blue above it.
And day by day, this pathway smooths, since first I learned to love it.
No storm can shake my inmost calm, I hear the music ringing.
It sounds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing?
How Can I Keep from singing?
    Keep Singing.

This song isn’t about the human spirit, which brought about 262 million deaths through democide alone in the 20 century. This song is about King Jesus. The melding of the human spirit is only beautiful in so far as its purpose is to bring glory to Him.

My tears flow freely. My fears rush out of my eyes, my voice raised high and clear even though I am alone. I can't keep from singing, no I can't. I so miss my choir, miss the elastics in my music folder snapping at the most inopportune time, miss kicking my water bottle under a pew. God, I need to sing! Thank you!

Life has been a struggle the past year or so. My wife and I met in our college chorus, we sang in our church choir, and performed around the county, but she died this past summer. I may not have a great voice but singing brings me joy. I try to go back to this performance to bring me back to music. Great song and these musicians, especially Guiliana Sarullo, show how much music can mean to them and all of us. And, Guiliana does double duty both singing and playing flute. Thank you, all of you.

It was the summer of 1998, in suburban Chicago. at Loyola Hospital. Clinical Pastoral Education, basic course. One of my colleagues/fellow students was named Amy, a Lutheran/ELCA seminary student from Iowa. The first time I heard this song was at a local church, where she led Sunday worship and preached a mighty fine sermon. I was thrilled at this wonderful hymn, never forgot that experience, and enjoy it to this day. I also have used it in my worship ministry.
God Bless Amy, and all who serve the Lord. And thanks be to God for this awesome video gift!!

This song is the very heart and soul of one of my favorite Finnish hymns that I've been wishing all the English speaking world could enjoy... Then this week I found this one!!!! It's so much the impression of the song "Maa on niin kaunis" which of course is sung to the tune of "Fairest Lord Jesus" but with totally different words. If anyone wants to listen to that one, you're in for a treat. And you can find a translation if you search. Music is so beautiful, especially when used to praise our Savior and Creator, who is blessed forever, and coming soon. Great job with this, everyone! Maranatha!!!

This was just gorgeous. Thank you so much. I was going to say simply gorgeous but there is nothing simple here. I cannot imagine all the work this took in post-production to create this video, matching singers and instrumentalists, adjusting sound levels, and creating the video. It was worth every second. I miss hearing people sing and play instruments together so much. This rendition of this beautiful hymn made me cry and feel utter joy at the same time (As Lily Tomlin's Edith Ann says, "two feelings for the price of one!"). I so appreciate everyone's contributions to this creation.

I've been making some peace with the notion of worship without singing. Then I came across this and remembered that my faith was formed as much in choir as in church. Now, I don't know what we are going to do when we get back to church. But also, I think in all of this I've also not truly grieved what has been lost...I've been trying to fight it off. But this helps me, if only to remind me of what keeps me hopeful and to remind me of what I want to reclaim when 'normalcy' returns.

Singing with others, in a congregation or a choir, is one of the things I miss the very most. I am deeply grateful to every one of you who were involved in making this in any way, especially for sharing your talents, time and hard work as you created this video; listening to it, singing along with it has brought the Spirit of the Lord into my home and heart, and this spiritual gift has helped to make my Sabbath feel more like a Sabbath. Just before discovering this hymn rendition, my son was perusing an 1883 hymnal in my collection (Gospel Hymns Consolidated) that had this hymn title with a different melody. He was so taken by the hymn that he looked it up on UA-cam and found this lovely rendition. The lyrics in my hymnal were attributed to "Anon." But while the lyrics of this virtual choir rendition are almost entirely lifted from the 1883 hymn, the meaning is entirely different in that hymnal:
My life flows on in endless song
    Above earth's lamentation
I hear the sweet tho' far-off hymn
    That hails a new creation
Through all the tumult and the strife
    I hear the music ringing
It finds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing
What though my joys and comforts die
    The Lord my Saviour liveth
What though the darkness gather round
Songs in the night He giveth
No storm can shake my inmost calm
    While to that refuge clinging
Since Christ is Lord of heav'n and earth
How can I keep from singing
I lift my eyes the cloud grows thin
I see the blue above it
And day by day this pathway smooths
Since first I learned to love it
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart
    A fountain ever springing
All things are mine since I am His
How can I keep from singing
While I absolutely love the NYC Virtual Choir musical rendition of this hymn, it saddens me that there has evidently been a conscious effort somewhere along the way since 1883 to conceal the anonymous author's real source for singing. Somehow, our growing post-Christian world has drifted away from what once gave life, in my view, a much deeper and significant meaning.

Glad you've enjoyed the rendition. Our choice to edit the lyrics to be more inclusive follows from the purpose of putting this particular project together. We hoped to bring many choirs from different backgrounds together in solidarity during a difficult time for NYC (and the world at large). The more inclusive lyrics that we've used are an attempt to preserve the power of this old hymn while opening the doors to non-christians who want to be part of the message. Thanks for listening.

    • @melissarowan3819
      @melissarowan3819 4 роки тому

@@PoddBrothers While I understand what was attempted was likely done with good intentions, when the line is changed from "since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth" to "since love prevails in heaven and earth", without including a note in the title about it being altered, this disrespects the original writer and his likely intention to give Christ glory (not to mention, disrespecting Christ Himself), and results in appropriation. From the Christian perspective, there is no way to preserve the power of this hymn while also removing from the song the basis of it's power- Christ- the source of life, love, and peace in a world of uncertainty. It fundamentally alters the meaning of the song. The concept of Christ being Lord as the source of hope is a critical tenant of the Christian faith: "If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation." Romans 10:9-10. I hope this helps explain why some might be concerned about the change in lyrics.

One hundred plus voices singing as one! Just sublime!
A lovely hymn and every verse of the hymn is special, especially "no storm can shake my inmost calm, I hear the music ringing.
I hear an echo in my soul, how I can keep from singing'
I drift off to sleep singing those words silently in my head and as I rouse from my sleep those same words are with me.

I love this song and this is such a gorgeous arrangement of it. Well done! Singing in a choir is such a soul-full experience and seeing this beautiful video reminds me that so many of us across the country and around the world are aching for the time when we can sing together in person again. But, as choristers always do, we sing anyway in whatever way we can because we know that it is necessary and healing for us and for the world.
