    There is so much racism and misogynoir behind the hate that nicki experienced around that time. She used to get called "crazy, weird, schizophrenic" by huge american publication. She was pressured to change and tone herself down. The Nicki we have today is unfortunately a product of all that hate.

      Help, stop crying in the comments. You are so focused on dragging Nicki w unrelated subjects envolving her (like her beef w megan and etc) that you are starting to sound dumb.
      So one person can't be mad at people being assholes w they because another person went thru the same thing and moved on? Lady Gaga is lady gaga, Nicki Minaj is Nicki Minaj. You are literally saying a BLACK person giving up on something bcuz they were suffering w RACISM (and maybe misogyny) is their fault meanwhile a CIS women get stupid rumors from blogs that she was a TRANS women... is not the same. It won't hit the same.
      And yes, Nicki used to wear those looks for attention, so what? She herself as stated this so you ain't saying nothing new, lol. True artist change and Nicki changed her aesthetic and still got the same amount of attention she had before and still getting.
      Stop obssesing over this women for the love of God.

    Nicki Minaj fashion was so appealing back then. I miss the era when she actually dresses like this. Another fun fact of Nicki she's part Japanese because of her grandfather. It could've contribute on her being part of the culture like she is with her African and Indian side. Knowing Nicki she's definitely into learning cultures and languages like spanish and I think more languages as well.

    That look with the neon fuzzy boots is my favorite look aesthetically that she has ever done! I have been following her career and fashion since like 2009 and I was nearly an adult then so I remember it all lol this was a fun walk down memory lane as a Barb
    also THANK YOU for so perfectly addressing the antiblack racism Nicki has faced in her industry and most of all in fashion! It is actually quite underrated how much she normalized the fun and youthful exciting fashion we enjoy today! Other artists certainly wore wild looks much earlier, but it was very seperate like "celebs can wear that but normies could never" vibes where I feel like Nickis style translated to her fans irl more than any other celeb has and its been integrated into non celeb fashion more than what I feel that it used to be

    • @manicmermaidash
      @manicmermaidash 4 місяці тому +13

      Also came back to add after your mentioning an interviewer not realizing she wore wigs.. NO ONE DID GIRL we were so silly lol Wigs are like totally normal for everyday people to wear but not all that long ago it was unheard of outside of POC cultures in white american culture we did not have any clue what was up whatsoever! I also think Nicki has had a fair hand in normalizing the normalness of using wigs to accent a look rather than like a permanent style if that makes sense? Like I feel the goal used to be for no one to know it was a wig specifically bc folks would be weird about it whereas now its kind of a flex because everyone knows more how much skill goes into making/stying a wig perfectly as well as how expensive they are!

      @@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 ??? There are lots of different not white cultures within American culture. Non white is just a cringe way to say that imo sorry if you don't like my wording ..but there is absolutely various POC subculture within American culture that even now.. but especially in that era of Nicki's career which MOST (not all) white folks were absolutely clueless about. There was this whole era of realization that people were wearing wigs and these ppl had not one single clue but it was already very much understood as a part of black American culture specifically but of course lots of others also hence why I said POC as a generalization rather than saying "nonwhite" which feels kinda weird dated way to say what I'm referring to ..as well as not limit or exclude other American ethnic subcultures who also have beauty or fashion trends that ur average white people are ( I thought) famously largely not privvy to lol

    The funny thing is Harajuku Barbie was just one of Nicki’s many alter egos. She plays with her alter egos back and forth throughout her eras for instance Roman was huge during her Pink Friday and PF:RR eras but we didn’t see much of that alter ego during The Pinkprint era. So even back then she didn’t always dress to play the part because sometimes she was just being Onika not Harajuku Barbie!

Doing something because you were inspired by something else doesn't automatically mean you're coping it or doing something thats very similar. I could dye my eyebrows green because Doja Cat inspired me to do it; even though shes never done that, simply because her style is alternative and represents liberation/rebellion from strict women beauty standards to me. Great video.
    👸🏼👸🏻👸🏾👸🏿Gyaru style is for anyone, ignorant people don't realise that it's supposed to be a fun girly expression and they never think about the inspiration behind all subsections, western inspired, from victorian dolls in frills with big hair to to graffiti art and the confident women who hung out on such streets. Harajuku is one of its most popular subcatagories which became massively when Japan was at it's most trendy around the early 00s and unfortunately many who got into it were stuck up, generally middle class, westerns who used it as escapism from society and gatekept away those who's 'faces don't fit', they're no different from those who don't want 'certain people' to enjoy or have any part in middle earth fantasy, only difference is a lot of the harajuku fans grew out of it because it was a fad for them, a lot like the closely related goth.

    You have no idea how obsessed I am with this video. Was doing my research for my Pink Friday Roman Reloaded video I’m going to put together, and stumbled across this. She has no idea how life changing and eye opening Pink Friday era and Pink Friday Roman Reloaded era was for some of us….and what that awakened in some of us. The whole movement the colorfulness the brightness….all of it all really was our escape from our reality into a world that we lived in that where some of our happiest moments growing up. This video is everything bby and I’m obsessed with you for loving what I grew up loving. 🩷💕 hope my bby sees this video >

    Im no Nicki fan but a lot of those comments were so uncalled for and very rude. Looking back on those looks, they're actually really cute in hindsight. Like, theybeat actually, so camp. Very unfair for people to say that ahe doesn't DESERVE to participate in these subcultures, who are you to say that?? Who are you to be a gatekeeper of a style you dont own??

    • @kimberleywilliams7802

      Even though I think she was absolutely gorgeous during her "mature" era, I think there's something to be said about how mainstream media reacts to black women conforming to the societal pressures of being "normal".
      Yr women are always praised for having whimsy and being different but black women are either not recognized for their innovation or just expected to be normal and conform to the style that they think is best. We have to only be one way to be seen in the room.
