Wish I could have seen that show. I was in West Germany at the time. One of the best times of my life. I learned to speak German too.
It’s great to see real historians working with modern media outlets like UA-cam. Historians and archaeologists are too under appreciated in modern society. I hope more history UA-camrs follow the Shogunate’s example.
I just have one small question and that is what the shinobi actually wore during combat or missions Because I’ve heard everything from samurai armor to regular clothing. Keep up the amazing work
They are basically like a special forces or recon unit of the samurai which is way cool.
Special forces were based on these techniques. Almost 370 yrs before 1954

When people think Hanzo is just from movies and fiction it always makes me giggle. He's always been one of my favorite people from history.

Also Hattori Hanzo (probably the second one who served Ieyasu) was also a spear master who is pretty awesome with his soujutsu skill. Think his favorite spear is on display to this day in the Iga ninja village museum.
Also the Chinese "Ninja" skill, we Chinese just call them "Intruder" or "Assassin", there are alot of Anti Intruder traps in the Forbidden Palace in Beijing, like ringing bells

I believe that his spear is at Sainenji in Tokyo where his remains are buried, although I could be wrong.
@@SengokuStudies Also his armor still survived I remember. Still Hanzo was more of a traditional Samurai than a "Ninja" like the popular culture depict him. In this day and age, Hanzo is more like the figure head of a special force unit or Secret Agents.
Hanzo is comparable to our western legend of Robin Hood.
Not one person but more of an acquired title.

To be honest, so much of this is applicable to intelligence in the modern day. Much of it is culturally not applicable, but if adapted to its base lessons there is crazy value in this. It really is that there are ninjas in the modern day in a sense, if not visually in every aspect of the work.

@@AntonyCummins Mr. Cummins, I know nothing of Bujinkan nor your work other than that one video in The Shogunate where he reviewed your book about being a modern samurai. I actually considered buying a copy if not for my tendency to find the author in the Internet first. It didn't take long for a Google search for me to start seeing your name being associated with words such as "fraud", "plagiarism" and "charlatan". People more knowledgeable than me have accused you of taking credit from other people's work (your team), engaging yourself in the translation of Japanese texts without actually knowing how to read and write Japanese as well as claiming to have received martial arts training from certain schools without any proof of completion.
As an outsider who's on the fence about purchasing your books, what are your credentials for doing what you do and could you direct me to a scholarly work you personally created which has been peer-reviewed and attested by an authoritative body on Japanese classics?
7:43 God, I’d almost forgotten Assassins creed made Hattori Hanzo an assassin. When I first saw this picture I thought it was fan art. Because the body guard of a tyrannical military dictator really screams freedom.
I find it kinda ironic that Shinobi Hiden, looks a lot like Shinobi Hidden. It's literally one letter off and staying hidden is like, the biggest thing ninjas did apart from enduring and survival

Those last two volume's are very interesting! It's true that ninja are not exactly same as the depiction we have today. But the truth is in no way disappointing! And to be honest its still quite similar to what one would expect. Nice video!

I like Anthony Cummins i just don't understand why he's got lots of haters
It mainly comes from the Bujinkan. If my work is correct it means they are wrong. So I get lots of hate from them because they feel it will make their school correct.
My reasons for not respecting him come from his "Nattori Ryu" instructional videos, where I can plainly see him showing off "sword techniques" that are extreamly dangerous to himself or anyone copying his form if using a real sword. (drawing it edge up across your own midsection because the manual you're interpreting says "draw the sword to the right, REALLY?!)

If the Japanese ever figure out their ACTUAL history they will find some very wild stuff. From the "first" Emperor to now Japan has so much history wrapped in myth and propaganda that it's insane. The Shinobi are just one facet of this insanity.

This really just cements the fact that Shinobi weren't magical assassins that wore all black and executed people in the night. These are literally just commando units. The things described in this book can be found in any Special Forces instruction class down to the demolition of bridges. I guess someone should let the Navy SEALS know they're just American Ninja.

Hattori Hanzo is more a title that signifies the continuation of an education through a lineage of the absolute values required to wage conflict with the greatest effect...regardless of any other cultural affectation. One could also utilize the same concept as it applies to "Napoleonic' or 'Caesarian'...with the exception that "Hanzo' due to its geographical atomization, was specifically limited to familial adoption.

There is more because there are more vols chapters whatever you want to call it that is missing,or they burned the information so it does not get into the wroung hands. Rember each shinobi family had there own specialitys and traded information by oral tradition showing exchanging with eachother and alot of masters did not want to to be known as well. This is why one can not say one family practice is wroung it is further information for learning skills.

Back in the 80's "Sonny" Chiba played Hattori Hanzo on a Japanese TV show, each season of the show he played a different generation of Hattori Hanzo, the show was broadcast in California on a Japanese language station with English subtitles. Quinten Tarentino saw the show and decided to incorporate Chiba as Hattori Hanzo into Kill Bill as the current generation of the character.
The 4 volume sounds alot like espionage and stealth.
Historically that's what they were. They were spies and assassins, not dudes and duddettes (historically there have been female Shinobi) jumping around in black outfits.

Hi, can you please do a video about Japanese swords and the quality of the steel (iron)? Because some people bash it by claiming that Japanese steel was bad. Iron from Japan did have more impurities, but it was folded many times to improve the quality and overall still good. There wasn't a shortage of iron during the feudal era. It was only during the industrial age that there was a shortage due to much higher demand. Check Gunbai's Ancient Japanese Warfare blog "Iron and Steel Technology in Japanese Arms & Armors - Part 1: Iron Sources"
I did do a video on Samurai swords, however I did not go into too much detail regarding metal working in Japan.
@@TheShogunate okay it would be great if you could make such a video titled for example "Quality of Japanese steel, iron and weaponry". Then people can reference to your video when people bash the quality of Japanese weaponry. It's a shame when people rubbish or dismiss finely made samurai weaponry and armor as inferior, because they presume the steel is bad or brittle. There are some threads about it on Quora.

I saw a really bad youtube video on the ninja. It was made by a guy who normally does history videos on the samurai. This time he made one on the ninja and used Anthony Cummings as his "source." The gist is to present the ninja as just a "job" that some samurai did. This is erroneous, although not entirely false. There are several tactics that are being used by this new wave of ninja imposters. One is to try to use a knowledge of history to cloak oneself in the appearance of being an expert. One problem with this is that they don't really make logical conclusions, and even worse they are purposefully misrepresenting history. They try to support their agenda with false assumptions, which is where their superficial knowledge of history becomes more clear. It is a mistake that is made even by people with college degrees and write books. ("Cough! Stephen Turnbull. Cough!) Unfortunately many unknowledgeable people are becoming misled and these new ninja imposters are gaining a following. One trick is that they present the argument that the word "ninja" is actually a new word, not commonly used before the 20th century. The common word historically was "shinobi." Their accusation is that anyone claiming to teach "ninjutsu " is teaching something created in the 20th century.
What exactly are you trying to say here? That this video is wrong or that some other irrelevant video you won't name is wrong?

All ninjas were not called Shinobi a Shinobi was a high rank Ninja. Just like all samurai we're not called warlords and shoguns those are titles of the class. And of course they have different Ninja scrolls not all ninjas were the same there are many different types of ninjas from many different clans who taught different things. Most ninjas we're actually farmers who would practice espionage listening to high rank officials and their conversations to find out where the target is and study him the farming tools they used were actually their weapons and they were training while they were farming. Ninjas rarely ever use the sword they use the weapons they farmed with. And ninja clothes that are depicted to this day are flat out and nonsense ninjas dressed like farmers when it was night time they would just dress in dark clothes IDK where you guys are getting these Ninja outfits from. And hatori hanzo's nickname was not Hanzo devil. They referred to him as the demon. Because he had a super heightened senses that was unhuman they believe no human can possess such power so they refer to him as the demon. And his favorite tactic was to jump from off of a building onto the target and then attack. He understood an aerial advantage and utilized it well. If three people were walking you could jump on two of them knocking them to the ground killing the other one and then coming back to finish the two that was his tactics.
My family was personal friends w the emporernof Japan due to me being a Romanov. His relatives or father is telling me the texts were hidden by his family from the generals during WW2 and the generals made up texts to present to you the public anyone they want to deceive see the WW2 generals wanted Shinobi and kamakazi behavior from all citizens so they used these texts you are supposedly transcribing only for WW2 and that I am correct there was a separate class of men and women called SHINOWABITIZII OR SHINOA and also NINJA INFORMALLYBthroughout time w the sole purpose of spycrafting and assassins in Japan dating back to as far as his family has records which was to 500 ad USA time
