You Better You Bet Bass Cover

- This song is off The Who's 1981 "Face Dances" albums.
I've never been a really big fan of "The Who" but certainly do respect John Entwistle's role as an icon in the bass world. I would put him in the category with the "looser" greats, along with John Paul Jones, Jack Bruce, Jack Cassidy and even, to some extent, Geezer Butler. I use the term "looser" because their bass lines seemed more improvised and "feel" based. And live, were often played a bit (sometimes quite a bit) differently than on the studio recordings.
I was never a gifted improvisor and always aligned myself more with those bass players who I refer to as the "tighter" greats - Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, John Glascock, Dave Hope...whose bass lines seemed more precise and in some ways mechanical or mathematical and were often played live, very closely to the album versions as they were more of a structural part of the songs.
one of The Who's most underrated songs... and as per usual a very busy bass song
one never really understands how good Thunderfingers was... until they try to take apart one of The Who's songs and learn the bass part....
Truth.
Thanks Dave. In a way, John Entwistle was the inspiration for the way I set my bass up. A very long time ago, I read an article by luthier Rick Turner where he quoted Entwistle as saying, "I want the fingerboard dead flat and I want the strings to buzz just the same on every note".
I thought that was brilliant. I do have to be mindful to lighten up on my attack the higher up the neck I play as if I play too hard, the notes will just choke off.
Playing with this set up does have its drawbacks.
John Entwistle is Smiling down on you from the Rock n Roll Heavens. Nicely Done.
Cheers.
Fantastic! Love the Who and this was a great track. Expertly done as always!
You freakin NAILED THIS ONE My Friend!!! EXCELLENT Job!!! Enjoyed watching this one VERY MUCH indeed!!!
Really well done. I love the intro.
Thanks for sharing with us.
GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT!!!! Love all the pops and flourishes he does. You nailed it. Nice job
Thanks so much!!
Nothing better than hearing a bass line during the day and in the evening type in the song and then see the familiar wall of masks backdrop . Loved 4:09 :)
I'm sure there must be something better than that... haha. Thanks for the kind sentiment though. It was a bit clunky, but it works.
Jolly good, as usual :) One of my favorites, pleased to find this.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks a lot. LIke I said, I was never a big Who fan but this is the only album of theirs that I own. I really liked the piano-like sound he got from his basses on this album.
I think Townsend is similar in a lot of ways to Alex Lifeson in that they both fill up a lot of space using interesting chords and their solos range from ethereal to dense, depending on what the song requires.
I watch your videos and realize why i started playing bass over 25 years ago... brilliant playing!!! Thank You
this makes me smile all the way through, thanks!
Cool
Yes, more Entwistle covers!!! :) And Squire, they are with Geddy Lee 3 best bassist ever :))
Great playing Troy you did the mighty thunder fingers Justice!!! One of my favorite songs by The Who. Thanks now I have another to work on this weekend ✌🏻
Thanks a lot.
Thanks for posting this. You play it so well and it made learning the song much easier than tabs.
It was my pleasure. I'm glad it helped!
That was really good! It's amazing how fast you come up with all these videos!
Very nice, Troy. I've been waiting for some Entwistle!
I just subscribed to your videos this morning. I AM IMPRESSED! I've been playing for several decades and I've seen many players on youtube who cover great bass parts but to me, you are the most accurate and consistent. When you talked about using an "interpretation" in YYZ, then went back, played it the way Geddy did and explained the difference - that really got my attention. Love what you're doing. Please keep up the good work.
Killer cover, killer sound, killer player ...! You rock...!
Thanks!
bravo ! great show ! true place in my heart, john entwistle, you got it all down to a tee ! love the who. they still had it in the 80's. just watched 2017 eminence front . wow
Thanks a lot.
Man, i watch what you play it , then i play it, great learning tools Excellent job on these bass lines!🤘🏻
That’s so great to hear! Thanks a lot.
Good work, i love the consistency that you get throughout the neck (attack level).
A bass cover that would make John Entwhistle proud 🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍✋✋✋
Do you think? Thanks so much Deepak.
always thought this was a fairly busy bass line. great job man!
Stupendous job once again, sir. I love your videos, and this one is no exception. As uncool as it may be to admit, I always really liked the "Face Dances" album. The Ox is in fine form, as always, but what is particularly noteworthy is the textural precision of Pete's guitar playing, especially the solo in this track.
Thanks Constantine.
The intro is deceptively tricky and one of the most challenging parts of the song.
I've never been a huge fan of The Who, but I love this song! The bass in the intro is great. Great cover as well!!
I'm not huge fan either, but they've got a few great ones. Thank you very much.
@@TJH3113 Boris the Spider is another great one on bass!
Nice Cover Troy!
Nice one Troy!
This is real talent was perfectly in tune and all the rights accents and inflections good job bro, people may crucify me but I'm kinda prefering this video to the original entwistle these days haha 👍
Thank you so much for the very kind words, Tim.
AWESOME !!!!!!
You butter, you butter your bread. Well done! 👍🏻
😂🤣😂Thanks!
great work man
Thanks.
Great job, thumbs up.
Thank you very much!
Perfect, Perfect!

Bravo !!! Brava , again!!!!
Thanks.
Thanks for subscribing and for the nice comment as well.
Sweet Nice Bass Cover of The Who ...
note for note perfect wtg awsome sound
Thanks a lot!
Thanks, that was nice of you to say.
Yeaaah!) Troy covered The Who!
Totally agree with the tighter and looser players!
Thank you very much.
Fun fact about this song: When this song came out it was number one on the charts, and what song was number 2? That song would be Tom Sawyer by our favorite Canadian power trio RUSH. Yes, people liked this song more than Tom Sawyer in 1981.
I didn't know that. The 80's was a great decade for music.
I'm a 18 year old who likes to listen to Rush, and none of my friends ever heard of them! Shame.
+TJH3113 eminence front!
Actually there is a coffee table book with photos of his entire collection that is a lot of fun.
excelente!
Thanks.
You're very talented
your dog keeps licking my nose and chewing up all those a and the other one I know what I'll be wearing crazy clothes and I look pretty crappy sometimes LOL
Thanks a lot.
One of the first songs I learned when I got my first bass.....
Of course I can't it play it this perfectly.....
Also the Clive Barker tidbit was interesting, his stuff is uhhh..... Interesting.
Cool.
Thanks.
He had some really amazing basses didn't he?
That's one of my wife's favorite songs. Maybe I'll do it at some point.
Thanks.
Do you mean "collaborations"? Right now, Harry's finishing up his parts on a non-Rush collaboration we are doing with another couple of fellows that I'm pretty excited about. And then he has to put his guitar tracks down and mix our next Rush collab before getting together with Mike to to the video.
Yes he did!
Always great to watch you play these great tunes. Heard one on the way to work the other day and was hoping you already tackled it on your channel. Ever have any interest to consider "Another Tricky Day"? I would be curious on how "your take" on playing that one would be?
Thanks Lori. I gave that song some thought and it's probably one I'll eventually get around to.
I met John Entwhistle at an autograph signing. I told him I was a bass player and he wrote "keep on Plunkering" on the autograph. That was funny because I was fooling around with a band at the time and knew it was not going anywhere. He didn't seem like a bass player when I met him, more of a real passive guy and not one to get mad or be ugly.
Thanks.
Cool story.
Yep, he was one of them for sure.
That's one of my wife's favorite songs. Maybe I'll do it at some point.
I've got one more from the same album.
Nice! You should! Me too... I think.
Watch the ring finger ! wow
Back when I would barely ever use my pinky.
YEAH MAN!!!!!!!!! How close are you to Boston, would love to play with ya!
Thanks. I'm around 3 hours from Boston in New Windsor, NY.
Oh ok... not too far, would be cool to do a session someday.
Is the tone of your bass in this video from the amp or the bass itself? Nice cover by the way!
Good.
Totally agree about the bassists like Entwistle playing with more feel and improvisation. What do you think of Mike Rutherford? He's probably my favorite bassist ever. His work with Genesis is stellar.
Que grande dujovne.
Nothing wrong with loving The Who, great band, even post Moon. Nice playing. Like so many other rock stars I wish Townshend would have stayed in the fold.
Hey man, sounds great and the last thing I'd want to do is interrupt you while jamming. However, don't freak out but I just want you to be aware that there may or may not be a few sinister appearing blokes, directly behind you.
Thank you very much… And thanks for the warning.
I had to look up "glissando", but, yes, you are right about that.
Ive been trying to get this intro down and am having trouble getting my fingers (right/"picking") up to speed with the timing...do use your ring finger too? Great Job btw, and on Pinball Wizard!!
No, just my index and middle. Find a patter you're comfortable with and just play it util it becomes second nature. If think about what I'm playing during this part, I'll screw it up every time. Thanks.
I'd love to hear some "Punk Meets the Godfather" :)
Yes i am agree on your coment too.
Do you think Pastorius would be in that list too?
Wow.
Great cover, dude. My two year old daughter loves this song. I might have to show her this. Wonder what she'll think of your masks? I l
I like your covers, Some times the bass gets lost in the back ground.
When are you and the boys going to put up some of your home cooked music again?
Thanks for posting!
I REALLY liked thee write-up to this video
Thanks.
Nice!! All you need now is an Alembic!!
Thanks.
Some people build vibrator launchers; I learn songs on the bass...not much difference between the two.
hoorah.
Really good work, as are your other covers. Listen to The Who's magnum opus, Quadrophenia and have a go at The Real Me - lead bass at its brilliant best.
Thanks a lot. I recorded The Real Me last week and I'll post it sometime next week.
Looking forward to it.
Entwistle was a beast! try playing like this live for 2 hours and see if your forearm isn't about to fall off lol
Yeah, he was.
I've got one more from the same album.
Nice trophies.
Perfection is all I can say. M arvine :-0
Thanks Marvine.
I'd like one in my "Name That Bass Line" dressing room then.
Thanks.
Actually, the Drama album is probably my favorite YES album.
Rush was exceptionally good. So good in fact that I nearly went to see them again the following week which is something I've never done before. I most likely will go see them again when they come back around next spring/summer.
Nice. Didn’t realize the complexity of this one. How about a take on “The Real Me”?
Thanks. "The Real Me" should be hitting the streets some time next week. Sorry it took so long.
Thanks a lot.
What masks? Those are trophies.
I forget, does that bass have a black pickguard or is it just naked. Can't really tell from the vid...
what strings are you using?
D'Addario EXL220's.
What type of stings and gauge?
This was a very long time ago, so they may have been Curt Mangen strings in a standard light gauge or D'Addario EXL220's which I've used on almost all of my basses for a very long time.
I never listened to much Jaco but, if he had played rock, he would probably have fit that description.
I was never a Genesis fan. As far as Mike Rutherford goes, I never liked the fact that he divided his duties between bass and guitar. I mean "make up your mind man." Same goes for Greg Lake.
He may be a very fine player for all I know, this is my own nonsensical bias.
Love your channel. Excellent bass playing. Its nice to hear someone capture the feeling in these bass licks.
But, i have to strongly disagree with you on your statement about certain bass players splitting their so called duties. Frankly I am very surprised, and confused.
GREG LAKE...BASS/GUITARS/LEAD GUITARS
MIKE RUTHERFORD...BASS/GUITARS
MY ARGUMENT???
GEDDY LEE...(who you cover)BASS/KEYBOARDS
JPJ...(who you cover)BASS/KEYBOARDS
Just to name a few. I could go on...
John Entwistle is the most influential bassist in rock history...
Yes, one of them.
hmm?
Thanks.
I'm sorry but I don't mess around with tabs at all.
Not one single question about the masks??? LOL!!!
Don't ask, don't tell.
Okay, is there anything you can't play?
Yes. That would be everything I don't.
Roflamo
Good to see you have a sense of humor-I was really asking if there's anything out there too technical for you to play?
how about supremely creative greats instead of looser.
I am referring to their style of playing, not the bass-lines they created. I think they were all supremely creative.
@@TJH3113 I understood completely. That's the beauty of music.
