  • Don't be afraid to use that old pressure cooker of Grandma's, it's a very useful piece of kitchen equipment. So dust off that old relic and put it to good use...you'll be glad that you did.
    Once you get the hang of using it, you will wonder why you didn't use it before. You can have the slow cooked taste, without the slow cooking time. You can take cheap cuts of meat and turn them into tender,juicy,tasty meals in no time at all!!!
    Try it and have fun!!!!!
    If you are interested in seeing an electric pressure cooker, this link will show you an unboxing/setup video + a recipe for pulled pork included at this link:

    Did you pay attention watching Mom or Mémé make pot roast in the pressure cooker on Sundays? Just teasing! Great video. For me it was my parents. I watched them for years. They would brown and cook the meat first. Then they'd add and cook the veggies. The meat usually took about 50 minutes. The veggies about 12 once the jiggler started jiggling. This video brought back memories. Always follow manufacturer's directions when using a pressure cooker. After using wait then slowly run cold water over the cooker for five minutes. I would then gently lift the jiggler-off the lid using a long-handled fork to see if any pressure remained inside. There can't be any pressure AT ALL left when you remove the lid! Even a tiny amount could cause bad burns as the meat, water and veggies would hit the ceiling! No joke! I've seen it happen! Be careful to pay attention when using a pressure cooker and be sure to keep children, teens and adult dummies away from it.

  • @ThePieguysKitchen
    @ThePieguysKitchen  11 років тому +1

    As I state in the video, you let the cooker cool in the sink for 5 minutes, before you run water over the top. You can see the time lapse transition in the video. This is also what the instruction manual calls for and I have yet to have even one warped cooker in my many years of using a pressure cooker. Thanks for watching and Happy Cooking!!

    If the lid flew off sideways then it wasn't on properly, be sure the lid is on tight, turn heat to medium once the weight starts to jiggle, cool before opening with cold water over the pot, remove weight to allow any leftover steam to release, then open the pot. Been using a pressure cooker for 40 years & watched my gramma use one for 15 years before that. They are fabulous

    The book that came with my Mirro cooker, says to do it both ways...depending on the recipe. Sometimes it's right from the stove and into the water and other times, it goes from the stove to the sink for 5 minutes, before the water. Either way, I've NEVER had a warped cooker. My Grandmother never had a warped cooker either and she also did it both ways. They are pretty rugged items.

  • @ThePieguysKitchen
    @ThePieguysKitchen  11 років тому +1

    That's true, but I like mushy veggies. When I'm cooking for a crowd, I will cook the meat for 35-40 minutes and then add the veggies to the meat and continue cooking for another 10 minutes. It's just easier to do it the way I demonstrate in the video and that's what I wanted to show, that it's easy. The simpler it looks, the more people are apt to try it themselves and that's my goal...to get people to try something new. Thanks for watching!!

    You can certainly do that, if you want. I haven't had any problems doing this way for 35 years, but better safe than sorry...right? Once you have enough experience, you know when it's safe or not. Typically, the cover will not come off very easily, if there is a dangerous level of steam built up inside. So, bottom line is, if the cover will not come off with ease...let it cool off some more and go ahead and remove the weight as well. Thanks for watching!

  • @ThePieguysKitchen
    @ThePieguysKitchen  11 років тому +1

    Marge-
    The ingredients that are cooked with the roast are really up to you, just use about 4 cups of chopped vegetables. I usually use: onion, carrot, potato and sometimes a little celery...along with a couple of bay leaves. Season the meat with your favorite herbs and spices (ie: salt,pepper,garlic powder etc.) Very simple, give it a try.... Happy Cooking!!!

    My grandmother had a stove-top pressure cooker that she used semi-frequently for pork chops & scalloped potatoes, Salisbury Steak and many others. Depending on the instructions of the manual and for each recipe, she would follow them exclusively when it came to releasing the pressure. Sometimes for the quick release, she would gently lift the weight (using a large, two-pronged meat fork); other times she would put the pot in the sink and put cold water on it. All depends on the recipe.

    • @ThePieguysKitchen
      @ThePieguysKitchen  10 років тому +3

      Thnx Diana... my grandmothers pressure cooker must be at least 50 years old I use it for beets and applesauce in the fall all the time but there aren't instructions left for it ...does releasing the pressure naturally mean taking the weight off? and then you put Cold water on lid? I LOVED her Salisbury steak i've never heard any other person mention it since you did! Maybe she did that in the pressure cooker as well...thnx for your advice!

      Excuse me-"Diane Milligan" it should be...

    • @ethelryan257
      @ethelryan257 5 років тому

      Releasing pressure 'naturally' means to remove the pressure pan from the heat and wait until the pressure has fallen completely.
      Most meat recipes suggest the five minute wait or ten before putting the pressure pan in the sink and running water over the top to cool it. It's just as effective to pour water on one small corner as all over the top. More importantly, you want to keep water out of the red air-release/over pressure valve as it can be sucked into the pot.
      Most vegetables are cooled off with water in the sink the moment their cooking time is up.

After watching this I'm wondering if it would work over a camp fire. Otherwise, why would one want to use one of these old things instead of a modern electric that is low cost, easy to use, and way less hassle? Just wondering.

    Wow! Each to his own... so many comments here on the music, etc. For my part I thought the whole video was excellent start to finish. All mean, no filler. Every single element is spare and important. No self-absorbed, behold-my-genius foolishness. I would point out that the cooker companies invariable state that when water is run over the pot, (and some actually tell you NOT to) it is important to avoid running it over the valves. If something were to lodge in a pressurized opening it could cause a seal failure or a launch of a small projectile into your eyeball! It's clear here that the ancient Mirro model (cast aluminum) has survived this use thousands of times so go figure...

      They didn't have pot roasts at the store when I checked(!) so I bought an eye of round instead. For all intent and purpose about the same size as the pot roast in your video.
      I am still new at using pressure cookers so unsure about times. I usually start timing it when it's finally under pressure. Then I turn off the heat and let the cooker rest for a bit before I move it over to the sink. If you do not count the time it takes to get up to pressure and when the heat was turned off I cooked my eye of round for about 23 minutes. At this point it was a little overdone for my tastes. Next time I am going to try and cook it under pressure for about ten minutes.

    • @ThePieguysKitchen
      @ThePieguysKitchen  6 років тому

      - Thanks for the update. It sounds like you have a pretty good grasp on things. You are right about the timing, you don't start timing until the pressure has built up and the lock engages. Just shorten up that cooking time and do the rapid cool down/pressure release, rather than letting it rest. I think your next roast will be closer to the result you desire. Keep up the good work!

    My mother always used a pressure cooker and her food came out great. So I am thinking of getting one, the old fashioned kind for the stove, and using it in my RV when I am not hooked to electric so I can cook fast on the propane stove. My question is, do you have to run it under cold water or can you just let it cool off naturally? Running it under cold water would use up my valuable water source.

    • @ThePieguysKitchen
      @ThePieguysKitchen  6 років тому +1

      - Well, I was just going by the book....the instruction/recipe book, called for the water cooling on this recipe. Some recipes, just say to allow it cool off naturally. I don't think it really makes a whole lot of difference. I've done it both ways. If you are concerned about running too much water, just allow it to cool off on its own, without water. It usually takes me about 10-12 seconds of running the water to cool it down, after letting it rest for 5 minutes at room temperature. I hope you get yourself an old fashioned pressure cooker, you'll be glad you did. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good Luck & Happy Cooking!

      @@joansrvadventures6112 , my Presto stovetop pressure cooker’s manual instructs us to “let the pressure drop of its own accord” for meat dishes like corned beef or pot roast. I tested it last night while cooking a plain corned beef. It only takes 15-20 mins. for the pressure to drop on its own. For veggies, I must cool the cooker quickly in a sink full of cold water, so the veggies don’t overcook.

      robert justus I don't understand how the cooker can go dry, if you added the right amount of water and were cooking at the correct level of heat. Does your cooker have a bad seal, allowing for too much pressure and steam to escape? If the directions were followed and your cooker is working properly, there is no reason the cooker should go dry. The food cooks so fast, it's impossible for the cooker to lose all of its water, before the food is cooked. Double check everything and try it again. Good Luck & Happy Cooking!!

      +robert justus Electric or gas stove doesn't matter... it really does sound like there's something wrong with your cooker. I've been using one for 20 years and seriously, it shouldn't go dry in the amount of time given for this recipe. At all. Either you forgot to add the water or didn't put the stopper on the vent, or your cooker has a bad seal somewhere. I can say this: you shouldn't hear a lot of steam sounds coming from your cooker until it's almost hot enough for the stopper to start rocking. If you're hearing a lot of steam before then, you've likely got a leak.
      Perhaps you mean that your elderly stove doesn't get very hot, even on high, so it took an unusual amount of time for the pot to come to pressure? I'm very curious to know what happened!
      New seals can be easily found on Amazon.com, just be extra careful to order the right one for your cooker. Gasket + pop-off kits are also available there; I replaced both my gasket and pop-off a couple of years ago via Amazon. (The pop-off on the pot in this vid is the red button looking thing on the lid) Gaskets and pop-off valves are made from rubber and age over time... they should be inspected periodically for wear, stiffening, or cracking, and replaced if needed. Exposure to cooking oil speeds the aging process, so be sure to wash the gasket and pop-off carefully after cooking rather than putting them away with trace amounts of oil on them.
      Hope that's helpful!

You don't want the weight rockin' & rollin' and jumping around like it's in a mosh pit, you want it to be slow dancing....nice and easy. Once you have the weight doing the boxstep, then you'll know it's at the right temp/pressure. Follow those directions and you will be Dancing with the Stars in no time. Happy Cooking!!
