This show, and Alan Shore in particular, dropped so many real world Truth Bombs, I'm shocked the series was allowed to continue. Thanks to this show, and Boston Legal, all notion that our justice system is actually just, honest, and fair is now gone from my mind. I know better. Our adversarial justice system is all about the prosecutor and defense both trying to lie when it helps their agenda, and trying to obscure the truth when it helps their agenda. Truth is not what they seek. That fundamentally breaks our system of "justice" and I don't know how to fix that.

    • @pragmaticpundit7703

This is one of my favourite shows. BUT, it's important to note - particularly in this scene; though SOME of it is absolutely correct (i.e. corruption of pharma), some of it is definitely wrong. RLS (restless leg syndrome) IS a thing. Social Phobias IS a thing (though, honestly, sometimes a little too readily diagnosed to be fair, doesn't change it exists).
There's several others, but the point is, he gets a few things objectively wrong here. It's weirdly one of Alan's weakest scenes because if you rewatch it - you'll notice he literally provides zero evidence, it's ALL speculation and assumptions; he counts on stereotypes, conspiracies and emotions to win his case (which, granted, a good move if you lack evidence).
That and you and I should both remember, it's a tv show - and they blow a LOT of things out of proportion, good and bad =P

RLS is real, I have it, unlike how he says in some of his scenes it isn't just your legs moving in your sleep, it can be maddening. One time I beat my legs senseless as a kid while traveling in the car because I felt the need to move them but couldn't, but hitting them helped for a moment or so, so I just kept hitting them. Although medication in my experience isn't required, doing exercises that focus on the legs works, and it's far better to exercise than take medication to achieve the same result.

I mean I hate American big pharma as much as anybody. But as someone who does have general anxiety disorder and depression I can tell you it's not made up. I went for years without medication because I held the exact same idea that I didn't need to be fixed that I didn't need to become reliant on medication but I realized that I'm as reliant on this medication as someone else is reliant on the chemicals that are naturally produced in their body. people need to stop making the problem people with mental disorders they need to start making the prices and over advertising of these products the problem. Mental illness is highly vilified in America and around the world still, so calling mental illness fake or certain disorders phony or concocted is just regressive and very harmful to a lot of people. Yes I agree with his moral point but I feel like he should be going about a different way while a 3-year-old should not be on antidepressants that is an oversimplification being that some children benefit from medication at a young age. We can't fix everything with medicine the problem with big pharma is they do feel like they can throw a pill at everything but that doesn't make mental illness or medication bogus or fake it just means that it needs to be more regulated and grouped with therapy and regulated by the government instead of private medical foundations.

Agree 1000%, I am reliant on my medication as well. It saved my life, but there’s always bad apples in everything and diagnosing someone with mental illness is taken very lightly. It’s overlooked by many, even the professionals in the field.

It ran five seasons, and if I recall correctly, the final season had a reduced episode count.

I love the show, but yeah never happen in reality.
He has turned up in court with only emotional arguments and nothing substantive. He would be told to go away and come back with something actionable.

The truth is being told by writers from a TV show. Everything he said is true. Think about it! How did humans last this long without the drug companies. They have our country hooked on pills that often do nothing other than make them money. This subject makes me so mad 😡 and depressed 😔 Oh don’t
tell me, they have a pill for that too.

I have a problem with the term generalized anxiety because it is not getting to the root of the problem only masking. If the anxiety is caused by depression, then they need something for depression which is not always but sometimes is depression medication.
