GERMANY: Citizen's allowance for Ukrainian refugees? Union calls for tougher measures
The integration of refugees from Ukraine into the German labor market remains a challenge. Although 72% of refugees are well qualified according to studies, only 29% of those who are able to work are employed. The reasons for this include high social benefits, inadequate childcare and legal hurdles that delay them taking up work. Countries such as Poland and Denmark show how things can be done differently: less financial support, better childcare services and more flexible regulations promote employment there. Critics are now calling for a reform of German integration and social policy in order to reduce the high number of recipients of citizens' benefits and create incentives to work.
