    Nice Video.
    No need to draw the selection rectangle across the whole ship for the merge-everything part. When no block is selected, pressing the merge-button automatically merges everything thats possible to merge together. A click with the middle mouse button into the background of the designer clears any selection.

    Holy fucking shit, dude. I've been playing this game for 80+ hours now after picking it up recently and I wish this had been explained by the game because the amount of frustration I've had even building basic ships is absurd. The ship building learning curve is brutal and I had no idea you could just convert blocks. Now I can do some things that I wanted to do but didn't know how. If you merge blocks does that affect in game attributes of your ships? Because it seems that on my battlecruiser, which is macaroni art compared to your thinker levels of ability, if I combine all the blocks it negatively impacts certain things. Thanks for this tutorial. Now I have even more to experiment with.

    • @kahn6287
      @kahn6287 3 роки тому +1

      Might be a bit late but the only things I can think of that will affect a ship's attributes(to a level that you actually need to keep a mind of) after merging is Cargo, Thrusters and Solar panel(I might be wrong on solar panel because I forgot if it get reworked or not)
      Cargo is best when you have a single big block then more small ones even if they reason in the same (for reason that I already forgot)
      Thrusters split its power to axes base on its flat area, so merging three 3*3*3 thrusters into a single 3*9*9 will the resulting thruster being weaker on one axis and stronger on the other two(total power is the same), while merging nine 3*3*3 thrusters into a single 9*9*9 don't affect much, directional thruster don't have this mechanic due to only giving power to one axis.
      Solar panel works solely on surface area, so merging will negatively impacts its output(again, not sure about this one)

      I may be mistaken, but I would think merging blocks means you are less likely to have broken blocks. Rather than having say, 12 blocks that each have x durability, you have one block with 12 * x durability. I would think there's a significant repair advantage there.

    One caveat about merging blocks, is a situation where you merge all engine blocks into one. Yes, you've cut the load on your system to 1/5th of what it was, but if your single engine is destroyed, you have no engine. Having engines or shield generators on multiple parts of the ship improves survivability.

    • @gary0073
      @gary0073  4 роки тому +1

      Once you have shields that will never happen maybe in early game..I have had thrusters blown off but never engines, if the block has a good amount of HP that engine won't get destroyed.

    • @HeadHunterSix
      @HeadHunterSix 4 роки тому

      @Compugasm it is my understanding that merging them combines the hit points as well - so it actually takes more damage to destroy the single big engine, during which time it works as normal. So in fact that may be better, as destruction of smaller individual engines gradually reduces thrust.

    • @HeadHunterSix
      @HeadHunterSix 4 роки тому

      @@gary0073 with the structural integrity field it should be harder to blow off an individual component, is that correct?
      My only issue with merging blocks is that if you decide to replace a merged hull block or framework inside your ship with another component, you basically have to replace the whole thing - or delete the merged block and open up the outside to be able to see where you are putting individual blocks. It's almost like doing surgery when all you have is the x-ray. :)

    • @compugasm
      @compugasm 4 роки тому

      @@HeadHunterSix Hmm, but that isn't better. Because you are presenting fewer targets for the enemy to hit, and therefore making it statistically more likely that the engine will be taking damage. The way real systems are designed, is that multiple smaller systems have built in redundancy. For armor, smaller interlocking plates dissipate damage and improve suitability.
      I'm sure it will depend on what kind of enemy you face as well. Vs. a 10k Omi ship, smaller blocks will be better. Vs weak enemies, large blocks wouldn't take enough damage to even break off.

    • @gary0073
      @gary0073  4 роки тому +3

      @@HeadHunterSix Yes you are correct merging blocks is there to reduce ram load, So that is why I say it's a final step. You could save and should save the ship before and after so you have 2 copies. Hide blocks with become your friend!!

    • @gary0073
      @gary0073  4 роки тому

      @@CMDRFandragon it's very difficult to build a large starfighter because the game doesn't allow it. There are things you can do to improve proformance like using trinium as your base blocks as these are very light blocks. And maybe drop armour from your ship if you have enough shielding. Try using thrusters only on your ship. These are just some of the ways you can improve your ships movements but as the spaceship gets larger the game will make it harder for you and it's built that way.

    Thanks for the video - overall very informative and useful. I'm not clear on how to save a template for a part rather than a full ship, so that I can add the thing to an existing ship rather than replace the entire build. Is that what the clipboard icon is for?

    • @gary0073
      @gary0073  4 роки тому

      Hey so see the below points to your question.
      - Template is the ship, so you are just building different sections then putting it all together.
      -Clipboard icon is the copy function, this is what you use to copy over your design and put it onto your current design.
      - So build a section of the ship and save it into a folder, then continue to build or change the same section and save it, Now you have 2 sections of your ship that should match and you can continue to do so as an example, it's a bit hard to try and explain as this is just one way of doing things.
      So if you didn't know there is a creative mode in Avorion, in creative mode you can play around with ship designs and save them and then use them in your current play through.
      - When you start a new galaxy there is a option to select creative mode, just below seed name.
      I hope this helps!!

    • @HeadHunterSix
      @HeadHunterSix 4 роки тому

      @@gary0073 it's still not clearer, honestly. What I'm asking is how do you select these saved things and add them without overwriting the ship in progress?
      It's not a question so much of building as it is importing - it sounds to me like you're building a "ship" (even if it's just an engine) and saving it, then adding that "ship" to your actual ship - I'm still unsure "how" from all this.
