Grandpa Amu made a combination of Luban table with a piece of wood.

- Grandpa Amu used a piece of wood to draw a line, carve, seesaw, and without breaking it down, he made a table case. in ancient times, when the army marched and fought, the general used a table case. it was also a combination of Luban table. now most of it is used as a small tea table. thank you for watching.
I'm a lifelong carpenter 50 years old now. I've built fine cabinets, luxury homes and huge bridges. This guy makes me feel like an amateur! Amazing work!
I'm a 57 year old carpenter in the United States I do high-end finish and trim this man makes me look like a novice this guy has skills

Obviously this is a case of generation to generation knowledge transfer, probably his son, an soon his grandchildren will be taught all the things he knows, and the things he personally learned, saw over time, summing knowledge in each passing generation.

I'm over here researching DIY cutting boards and this guy is operating at a Jedi level of skill that I didn't even know existed! Amazing!!!!!
and that skill have been existed for thousands of years
Can you imagine the quality of cutting board he could make?? 😮😮
This is only the second video I've watched of Grandpa Amu's. Am I feeling sick because of the workmanship? Yes. Am I feeling sick for the craftsmanship? Yes. Why? Because I'm a qualified carpenter and have been for the best part of two decades and I can safely say I will never be as precise and skilled with tools as this man. Absolutely beautiful piece and blown away at the way it all pulled together. Well done.
You can try watch him make the pig that walk. It was from that video I started enjoy watching him make new things.
What I love about this piece in particular is the minimal waste of materials. It's just so damn well built. So efficient.
@Vincent Vermeer well at least one market is the millions of views these vids get
Brother, have faith, practice and you will be. God bless you!
If you don't minimize the time invested, you can invest much more in beauty, the more meditative way of making.
At slow speed, mistakes are less quickly made. Slow tools are precise.
Beautiful in its own way, no need to compare with the 'efficient' way of maximal result on a minimum of time.
I am a retired architect and general contractor. I watched the video of the small bridge that Grandpa built and though I had never seen that type of bridge I understood the concepts he was utilizing and in my own mind I thought to myself very nice job but with all of my superior tools I could easily fabricate a bridge like that. Interesting but not that impressive.
Now this table. Oh, my. Once again I understand the concepts employed but there is no way I could replicate that table. I simply do not have those amazing skills. I applaud his skills and also find joy in the fact that the world still has people such as him.
That's because in western society we think in inside the box, plus we have the culture of erasing what our ancestors did rather than perfectionate it, both things are needed for creativity and inventive
Im a 37 plus year machinist. I have spent my life working with my hands. Mostly machine shop, manual machines now. Some cnc in my early years. Auto mechanic and wood working on my own stuff. Grampa Amu amazes me with every video. But this table. I gotta watch this again. The man has truly mastered his craft.
There quite many such bridges still exist in China with hundreds or even over thousands years old.
I have 50 years experience in cabinetmaking and one thing we all have to know: machines and power tools dont make you a tradesman. You either got it or you dont. This guy is a master without power tools.
can you tell what king of wood is used here? thank you
power tools were not available in most places in China until the late 90s. I remember the team that did our wooden floor in our old apartment in 2002 did not have any power tool whatsoever, everything was done manually. East Asian countries have long histories with carpentry dating back thousands of years, Luban, from the name Luban Lock, is actually the name of a person that was living in the BC 500s of China who invented the Luban Lock, he is well known as one of the best, earliest carpentry, architecture GOD in the history of China, all carpenters, architectures in the history pretty much all burned incense to him as he is the ancestor of woodworking, to wish to be able to have his abilities. An old fairy tale in history said the wooden horses and birds Luban made can run and fly by themselves.
@@konstantina8267 I would like to know also, but I'm going to take a shot and say I think it's eucalyptus because of it's color and I've seen it used in other Asian woodworking videos and l love the color of it

The amazing thing about this guy is that no power tool is involved in whatever he makes. Still precise and accurate
Johnny Lim actually, he has all of them. He just doesn’t use them. I have seen a table saw and drill press and planer in other videos.
Power tools can save time, but they can also accelerate the speed at which materials are destroyed and projects ruined.
I'd say precise and accurate ENOUGH for what he's building. This in itself is a lesson enough.

@@marcomontoya8964 To be honest that kind of build might be more difficult with powertools. Powertools remove your sense of touch when it comes to fine details. It's more labor without them but less chances to make a mistake.

Your grandson is so cute, he just put his face on the cup there!
So, I stumbled across Grandpa Amu a few days ago. He was building a bridge with just mortise and tenon joints and dovetails. No fasteners. No adhesives. Not even rope to secure it. Just wood joinery. I was fascinated. I sent the link to a buddy who is a pretty talented carpenter. Today we were puzzling out some carpentry task and I say "WWGAD". My buddy looks at me with this blank stare for a moment then smiles and says "Exactly! What would Grandpa Amu do?".
Now my wife is a Grandpa Amu fan too. If she walks into the room, and I am on UA-cam, she will say "Let's see what Grandpa Amu is up to". Then she will sit, staring at the TV, with her mouth agape. Every few minutes she will look at me with the same wonderment in her eyes that kids get when they see Santa and exclaim, "Amazing. He's a genius-level engineer. How he can look at a chunk of wood and think to himself "If I make a bunch of marks here and there. Then if I chisel here and cut there this chunk of wood will become a chinese transformer that turns into a stool or a table or an apple". Amazing!!!!". It's fun to watch her watch him work.
His patience.. Techniques.. And energy... Love towards his job and family... What a great person and blessed soul.. God bless him good health and great happiness... Long live his art❣️🙏🏻😊
This is exactly what the Internet was made for.

It's a shame that no one appreciates handcrafted stuff here in Germany. Everybody just wants cheap mass production. It makes me so sad. Sometimes I wish I could live in a country that is maybe not as developed as Germany but ppl would still talk to each other and help each other and contribute something to their home and living instead of buying everything.
Sorry for the rambling, that handcrafted table just blew my mind. I higly respect any person who is able to craft something beautiful like that out of a pice of wood without any screws or glue. Unfortunately I am not as talented. Keep making videos please!

@Vincent Vermeer And? Grandpa Amu still has more talent in his pinky that most carpenters have in their entire body, myself included. In the west we have this delusion of deadlines and performance. Most eastern countries still have the mentality that life happens when it happens. Why the hell they want to be like us is beyond me.
@Vincent Vermeer can't give you 1.000.000 likes ,sorry. 👍
@@matthewscanlan4387 You're quite correct! However the correct term for Grandpa Amu is "skilled woodworker." A carpenter is someone who builds wood structures, like houses, with a hammer and nails. Witness the book, "Sam Maloof, Woodworker."
@@homebrook - Well, he *did* build the wooden footbridge in his garden. Just out of curiosity, which part of your definition is more essential to being a carpenter? (a) Build wood structures or (b) use nails as well as hammers?
@@handylingua You miss my point. It is simply that a "carpenter," simply connotes someone who puts stuff together out of wood, where a "woodworker" is also one who works with wood, but with skill, multiple techniques, joinery, finesse, and an aesthetic eye. I spent seven years as a professional woodworker. I would never have described myself as a carpenter. People would have completely misunderstood what I did.
