Portugal strikes again: there's literally nothing about this entry that I don't love. It's so beautiful, elegant, stylish, melodic and poetic. It has such a strong point of view, it has a SOUL! And nothing about it is tryhard or forced; it's splendid. And the staging is simply wow, Portugal has been doing this so beautifully in the last few years. I actually think this will be sailing into the final. It's so striking and it stands out so much, as I read somewhere between all those entries "trying to be the next Cha Cha Slo Mo". I see this going through together with Serbia and Slovenia. Portugal is always true to itself; love love love this 🇳🇱❤️🇵🇹
Love Portuguese entry this year. I think it's ridiculous to dicuss whether it's gonna qualify. If it doesn't, there is seriously something wrong with this world. Greetings from Serbia.
Portugal being 25th on the Scoreboard is LITERALLY a crime. It's FANTASTIC, so delicate, really special with interesting sound pattern for a ballad and clearly Portugese. In my opinion, more striking than Serbia if we are comparing who is her direct competition. I can already see myself getting massively frustrated in May because I already am haha!!
Portuguese person here. I am pretty sure one of the main interpretation of the song had to do with depression and how that "flame" actually is your reason to live, that while you have that flame that still burns, even if your body drags and your mind weights, there's hope that flame may fuel a future, that we deserve to be happy in it.
It's mainly because Portugal's main goal at Eurovision has been to send something that feels authentic, with art and quality rather than try to impress or to play the big game. Sometimes some countries are too tempted to follow trends and formulas that they think will do well at Eurovision and something is lost along the way, but countries like Portugal and Serbia have shown that you can thrive at Eurovision while keeping a very distinct artistic identity.
Thank you for this. I am very proud of our entry and seeing so many ESC youtubers being so positive about it gives me hope. The song is about mental health and dealing with 'inner demons' and the 'Grito' is that scream at the end, but the word grito is never mentioned in the song.
If you aren't able to be in the televote top 10 out of 15 songs, then... is it really too much quality though? (I like it and don't see how it ends up 11ith or lower in the semi)
It definitely can. A ballad isn’t guaranteed a bad result with televoting. There aren’t much ballads in the first semifinal and they will definitely stand out.
This is my biggest grower, at first I was like "it's okay" but in the last week I have listened to this non stop and now it's in my top 10, It's so beautiful and the melody reminds me so much of Zora's Domain from Ocarina Of Time. I love Portugal for always sending whatever they want and always singing in their language. I'm starting to feel so stressed about about Semi 1 now because I love all the songs expect 2 and I will be loosing so many favourites 🥲😅
I really think that the lyrics talks about depression and when we aknowledge that we have it and we need to get out of it, I kinda see the dancers like the voices in our head that get us down, and when she throws that big note (the "Grito") we can see the dancers getting away.
Love this song, love everything about it, from the staging to the lighting to the vocals. Entered into my rankings at number 4. I am however not confident that it will qualify but I so hope the people will vote for it!

This so deserves to be in the final, but I'm worried that it might not qualify with the televote. (If it does, it'll probably be by only a couple of points like Serbia last year.)

Ok I looooooooove that story, so I wish they could make it a little bit more clear with the choreography. Because I didn’t work out that that was the storyline, maybe make the demons being vanquished a little bit more clear, using the floor LEDs or something

When you said it's going to be a slow ballad my expectations took a nosedive. But it was better than I thought (based on what little I could hear). White staging is unusual, isn't it? I can't think of anyone else that had it, except maybe Dima Bilan. White can easily look ugly or boring minimalist or too churchy. But this worked. In the beginning they had an extremely bright white light coming from the LED wall, and then different shades of white throughout the rest of the song. I think they could keep that for the biggest portion of the song, but do something more interesting with the LEDs for a short bit. However, I think suddenly bringing in a completely different color might look like a cheap trick.
Portugal or RTP do not have the power of other markets and this is where being small comes in. RTP has a budget tabled for Eurovision and to be honest, they have done authentic wonders without the financial power of other countries. I remember Mimicat who tried to do something fantastic and the production itself did not accept it, or else there were extra budget issues. Here too there is a very large marketing factor, we need to have international musicians to leverage our artists. With Salvador Sobral there was a dad of musicians to support and this influences the vote. Or if they weren't also influencers of their audience.
I'm not so sure if theres any type of exclusion at RTP. I mean singer's can apply and submit a song even if they're not invited. Mimicat last year for instance.
Tbh Portugal is one of my least favourite countries in Eurovision. I respect that they stay true to their music but I just couldn’t get along with most of their songs. ''Grito'' is probably my favourite portugese entry ever in Eurovision (I’m a fan since 2016). It just has something that really captivates me. This belongs to the finals!
Everyone likes Portuguese music, but then either they don't make it to the final, or they have a very low score in the final, with much weaker music in the competition. Maybe it would be interesting for people to start voting on musical taste and not because the country next door is a neighbor. If what matters is the music, then vote for the music.
Eu não acho que seja essa a razão. The dancers have their faces covered because they dont represent people. In my opinion they are her fears, sadness, insecurities, etc that have been keeping her from being complete and happy with herself.
yes I agree, although they highlight Yolanda more, which is perfect! you two are so damn right, da dancers give so much life to the performance @@anacristinaribeiro9592 😃🥰 portugal on top
I’ve reached the point where my top 10 is locked in. It has to be an absolute banger to shake it up now. This falls into my “it’s an entry” category. I don’t hate it, but it’s a skip for me.
I don't know, the song hasn't clicked with me yet 😵💫 I think the big thing is that Portugal's national final was almost entirely slow songs, there was something like seven ballads in a row? Even Mimicat sang a slower version of Ai Coração. So everything just felt washed out for me. I think I'll appreciate this more when it is beside more up tempo songs to give it more contrast.
Small correction with the Qualification Graphic: their 6 year QF rate is 80%, and the 15 year rate is 58%
In Eurovision the most part of the times, what counts is POLITICS. Politic Interests.🤐
Why is Portugal so underrated every year, loved them last year, love them again this year.
Becouse our country is underrated in everything. We don't know how to market ourselfs.
So true@@LadyNikitaShark
because people are only interested in “fun” songs sung by “hot guys” nowadays
unfortunately we are a small country😢
Because eurovisioners don’t give a fuck about art. What they want is hot guys and pop divas.

LYRICS
Iolanda - "Grito" (Scream)
[Verse 1]
I heard, (I) felt, the body charging
We continued like that, one and another, one and another, one and another
I'm free falling, I'll let you know when I get there
I surrender here, little by little
[Pre-Chorus]
Long strides, chained in the (race) start
I want to let go of what left me hurt
I ask the mother star to make the day rise again
[Chorus]
(It still [Ainda] burns [Arde]) I transformed every verse of me (It still burns)
And surrender to the courage that still burns, still burns
Hit the light on your chest and opens it
I am a flame that still burns, still burns, still burns
[Verse 2]
Today I want to prove myself
That I can be whatever I want (Whatever I want)
Bring together those who love me at a table
Forgive anyone who wanted to see me suffer
They don't fool me (No, no)
I'm every size (I am)
I still remember when I was little
(I was) the one who dreamed first
[Pre-Chorus]
Long strides, chained in the (race) start
I want to let go of what left me hurt
And I ask the mother star to make the day rise again
[Chorus]
(It still burns) I transformed every verse of me (It still burns)
And surrender to the courage that still burns, still burns
Hit the light on your chest and open it
I am a flame that still burns, still burns, still burns
I am a flame that still burns, still burns
I am a flame that still burns, still burns
Burn, burn, burn
I transformed every verse of me
And surrender to the courage that still burns, still burns
Hit the light on your chest and open it
I am a flame that still burns, still burns, still burns
The hight note is the screem, o grito

''Grito'' is probably my favourite portugese entry ever in Eurovision (I’m a fan since 2016). It just has something that really captivates me. This belongs to the finals!
🤍
Everyone likes Portuguese music, but then either they don't make it to the final, or they have a very low score in the final, with much weaker music in the competition.
Maybe it would be interesting for people to start voting on musical taste and not because the country next door is a neighbor. If what matters is the music, then vote for the music.
👏👏👏👏
White is peace.
Caras tapadas para dar o foco à iolanda
Eu não acho que seja essa a razão.
The dancers have their faces covered because they dont represent people. In my opinion they are her fears, sadness, insecurities, etc that have been keeping her from being complete and happy with herself.
yes I agree, although they highlight Yolanda more, which is perfect! you two are so damn right, da dancers give so much life to the performance @@anacristinaribeiro9592 😃🥰 portugal on top
The dancers are her demons, she is struggling, and when she screams, they disappear. The song is about strenght and mental health
I’ve reached the point where my top 10 is locked in. It has to be an absolute banger to shake it up now. This falls into my “it’s an entry” category. I don’t hate it, but it’s a skip for me.
Tom, react to Armenia already!!😭
i just filmed Cyprus, Armenia and Georgia are next
@@ESCTom can't wait!! Love your videos!!🤩🤩
I'm sorry but this and Serbia are the kinds of ballads I don't like 😭
Well, you are just one in million if fans....so yea
