- 100 years after opening as Dallas' first Black high school, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts remains a vital Dallas institution.
Pioneer Booker T. Washington daughter was a teacher in Dallas and her husband built a historical church and the KNIGHTS OF TEMPLER and etc in Texas. It was a place where the black social clubs and dentist and doctors of that time . Her name was PORTIA WASHINGTON PITTMAN and husband was WILLIAM SYDNEY PITTMAN , the architect. " THE PITTMAN, hotel downtown carries the namesake of William Sydney Pittman in his honor in Deep Ellum.
My 95-year-old father graduated from Booker T. Washington. He had to pick cotton in Richardson and Plano during the summer before he could go to school.
