A few suggestions that I have gotten I thought I’d pass along if they help. Don’t let your wrist move let your arm from the elbow it will help with your consistency in keeping time. This one I have yet to do myself but am going to do in this next week, put up a mirror to watch your hands as you look forward instead of down at your hands this as I was told should help with seeing what your fingers are doing and where they are going as they move. Hope these help. I am on the same journey at 45.
Just a suggestion if you are going to play eighth notes they don't have to be that fast...use metronome so that you make smooth transitions then increase the metronome so you get to your desired speed
