Blackened is absolute god tier. Will always remember popping the cassette into the tape deck and hearing that intro for the first time. Life changing
Im glad youre back
Aw thanks! I'm glad to be back. Nothing like a little dose of Metallica to welcome me back into the world of metal music :D
Dyers Eve still gets me emotional. You can hear the venom pouring out of James.
That track is crazy! So much energy poured onto it, a great way to end the album.
Definitely top Metallica song
One was one of the first songs I tried to learn when I started playing bass, but I could never figure it out because there’s no freaking bass on this album. Some guys wanted me to go play it with them and I told them I didn’t know it and they said we’ll just play it with my volume at zero. I guess if Metallica did it I’m certainly nobody to complain.
loooooolooollllooooool
Bad choice for bass bro.
Hey atleast you can claim that you play bass like Jason now. 😂
Best thing you could have done is follow the Rhythm Guitar parts and hope nobody calls you out for it, supposedly Jason recorded his parts by himself and they came out similar to the Rhythm Guitar parts due to him doing that way in Flotsam and Jetsam and nobody in the band communicating with him to tell him to change it.
I believe there is a version of the album on UA-cam with the bass at full volume..
i wish i could hear this album for the first time again, great video btw
Yes such a great album!! I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction :)
Fun fact: the guitar in to live is to die in 19:03 , is the last riff Cliff Burton wrote before his passing, and they never played that song live until around 2010 or 2015 (i don't remember the exact date)
Also for some reason this is the last album fans consider the "True Metallica" but honestly next one (The Black Album) is also pretty good not gonna lie, the 3 that comes after that one, not much of a fan tho. But if you loved the slower, more sludgy sounding songs, you are going to enjoy next album a lot
Thanks for letting me know! I would have loved to have heard this entire album with Cliff on bass if he had been alive when they made it. I'm sure that would have been amazing.
@@mollyesanborn yeah no prob👍.
Also i don't know if someone mentioned it but that 2nd voice you heard is probably Jason Newsted (the bassist that joined for this and next albums) and trust me, even tho he isn't Cliff, he is awesome too, you are totally going to see him shine on the next albums. Also he wrote blackened here.
@@brunomunoz467I think people brush aside the Black album because of the shift in writing style. It was definitely more assecible to more listeners. I thought it was great.. after that the slope became more slippery.. I still love Until It Sleeps..
That's mostly correct. It was played live for the first time *in its entirety* in December 2011 - however, shorter versions were played live several times before that.
Today’s the 37th anniversary of Cliff Burton’s death. He was the original Metallica bassist. This album is the first album with their new bassist, Jason Newsted. As part of his hazing, the band members completed muted all of his bass lines. You can find UA-cam videos with his bass lines in the album that’s entitled “And Justice For Jason.”
the fact that they "hazed" him by fucking their own album over just shows what dysfunctional assholes they are. i'm thinking of lars and james, specifically. nobody is allowed to criticize lars' shitty thin tinny muted drum mix on every fucking album, but please do mute the bass ... the other half of the rhythm section. morons.
Don't want to be that guy but Ron was the original bassist. Cliff was the second
This is the Metallica album I grew up with, I can't wait to see what you think of it!!
Heck yeah!! This album was fantastic, I absolutely loved all of the back and forth with the dynamics of their sound. Hope you enjoy the reaction 🤘
James' rhythm on the whole album is immense but especially on Frayed Ends.
Riffs for days on this thing.
Also this album is a highlight of Lars's drumming performance. Its well known that Blackened or Dyers Eve are on of his best ones, but people forget about Frayed Ends quite often. Probably because its slower and sounds bit less impressive for non-drummers, but the fills he does there are incredible, easily the most musically complicated and complex song that Metallica ever did (excluding maybe the instrumentals) and probably my favorite drumming-wise, knowing Lars's entire career its still hard to believe that he come up with it and played it
This album was released in 1988. The bass player Cliff Burton died in 1986. The band was in the depths of grief. James also talked of how the death of Cliff reopened wounds regards his mother's death when he was a youngster. Their most technical album. Kirk's solos are amazing on this album.
My older sister got me this album for Xmas, as she didn't have it. I think I was 15.
I had the first 2 tracks on repeat for an hour. I'd never heard anything so complex. I understand the love for MoP, but this album will always have a soft spot with me.
Best album. I love MoP, but this album is so dark and perfect
Обожаю ...And Justice For All.
Он всегда заряжает меня творческой энергией и силой к жизни.
Спасибо за обзор!
I’ve noticed your observations becoming more and more interesting and astute as I’ve followed your channel. Your mention of the softer sections sounding like “springtime” and the heavy drums on one mimicking the gunfire at the start were genuinely on point! Keep it up :)
The drums just before the outro solo starts are also mimicking Morse code for S.O.S -- "help".
When the world needed her most, she returned! :D
Also this was the first Metallica record I listen to.
Such a masterpiece, and boy were they pissed off when they made this album, and rightly so. I don't care what anybody says about the mixing on this album, the chug and heaviness of those riffs - totally scooped - is MY THING!!! Also it was a statement: We've lost our bass-player, so there is no bass. I know that was rough for Jason, but he was put into an impossible situation when he joined them after the death of Cliff.
Point: The chugginess of those riffs and that scooped, dry mix is what I still define as the ultimate Progressive Thrash sound! I just LOVE IT!
Bass players: Follow the riffs of the guitars or go away... HAhahahahaa....
Man. If I could go back and experience this album for this first time. I know this album like the back of my hand and just seeing you react to certain musical points was great.
A classic and "To Live is To Die" and "Dyers Eve" are timeless. This whole album has that raw fist in your face atmosphere
This is my favorite Metallica Album, Still wish Cliff could of been on it.
Such a great album, I loved hearing it. Although yeah I do miss that bass from Cliff, imagine what this album would have been if he had been alive when they made it.
I am so excited to see your Metallica journey! Much like the dynamics on this album, their discraphy is going to be quite surprising as you get deeper into it!
She has returned! Good to see you back! As to the album, I like it! Jason Newstead took over for Cliff Burton very nicely (however no one can ever replace Cliff Burton) and One was the first track from Metallica I have ever heard, and I have been a Metallica fan since.
Best time to ask, which Metallica album have you enjoyed the most so far? Me, do I have to say it? It's Ride the Lightning! It's the album that I associate with Metallica the most. Master of Puppets is a close 2nd and,,,,And Justice for all is 3rd.
Glad to see you back!
Yeah it's good to be back! This was a fantastic album, I loved how they really played up the dynamics with their sound on this one. If I HAD to pick a favorite right now, I think it's Master Of Puppets but I'll see with time which one of their albums I find myself returning to the most. Can't wait to hear more from their discography as well.
It’s a shame they did such an injustice to Jason by turning the bass so far down in the mix, the album could have sounded even better.
@@mollyesanborn I can tell that the first 5 albums are the easy ones to return to. Everything after the black album has been hit or miss. Though you should really check the video to one. It has footage from an old film called Johnny get your gun. It really messes with your mind!

E esse é o meu álbum favorito do Metallica, obra prima!!!!
Yes! My favorite music reviewer reacting to my favorite album of all time! I’m glad you liked this. I love that you call super aggressive heavy metal drumming “percussion” like they’re a tropical samba band. I love that you say A CUE STICK instead of acoustic and I love that you refer to their fast songs as “fun speediness”. Great review from a great reviewer!! Suggestion for next one: NIN “The Downward Spiral”.
i second downward spiral.
Ur reactions are amazing. You vocalise everything I feel bit can't put into words. Thank you
Imagine listen One for the first time, what an experience! Continue your journey with the Metallica albums, very fun to watch Molly!
Amazing reaction! Absolutely loving your Metallica journey!
Welcome back, Molly! ...AJFA is my fav Metallica album, can't wait to hear your thoughts.
Thank you! I'm glad to be back, and this album was such a great listen. Hope you enjoy the video :)
@@mollyesanborn would be awesome for a reaction to the official video for "ONE" probably the best song/ video concept ever!
Really thoughtful and descriptive comments. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts!
fav metal album ever
Yes this album was fantastic!
Let’s go you finally reacted to this Album🙏. One of my favorite albums
Welcome back Molly! Missed ya. 💯👍
Been looking forward to this reaction! This came out a few weeks before my senior year of HS started. It's pretty much what everyone was listening to that first semester.
Thanks for your reaction. My favorite album of all time. Listened to it thousands of times, great lyrics, mastery play, heaviness, power and fantastic solos. Everybody on its peak. All haters blame Jason on his bass play. Don't agree at all, in this case his playing along brings so much more heaviness into the songs. None of their later albums brought that perfection. My dream would listen to a concert with songs just of that album.
I've never heard anyone blame Jason. They blame Lars for telling the mix engineer to turn down the bass until it was no longer audible. No one says Jason's bass playing wasn't great. You just can't hear it well enough.
@@rome8180 Nope, that is incorrect. Jason himself stated in various interviews, that he was blamed having played along too much with the guitar. I agree with the part of Lars instructing the sound engineer to change the volume of the bass, he admitted that in interviews I have seen as well. But hey good that you see greatness of Jasons play on this album.
May be my favorite album from them, the dynamics make it so memorable. Blackened is a good song to put as your alarm I'll say that. Great reaction!
it was my alarm for a full year till i switched it up hehe
I love this album, it isn't the same level as the albums before it but its still amazing and it's probably the most technical and progressive album they've done. Glad to have you back, one hell of an album to come back with
i prefer it to mop and kea
yeah it isn't on the same level, AJFA it's the GOAT
This is a great album. Glad you enjoyed it. Molly, you have a radio voice! I could totally hear you on like an overnight program. "That was Track 1, Blackened by Metallica..." So cool. Glad I found your channel. Looking forward to more. Keep up the good work, and stay Metal!
My favorite Metallica album believe it or not.
Love the guitar tone on it
Just discovered your channel, glad to see people's first reactions to such classic albums and bands.
Wonder if one day you will do such band as King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. They're not full on metal, but very great rock band
Thanks! Glad you discovered the channel and are digging the reactions. I've got King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard on my list, I know they've been suggested a few times :)
Loved your reaction!
🤠
Molly is back and with a KILLER album!
Just got home from a trip time to check this out- I'm already pumped
love your comments, is nice to hear your "out of the box" words of this masterpiece of metal music. cant wait yours for the "Unforgiven" song in black album!
this was posted on my birthday, wish i would have watched it at the time because perfect birthday gift
That dive bomb at the end of the solo of and justice for all is just so epic
The best album they will ever produce in my opinion
This is James's angry album from a vocal standpoint. Probably my favorite Metallica album
This was the last classic Metallica album for me, after this they mellowed down almost into a different band. Some people loved it and they made a lot of money from it. The album is notorious for their being hardly any bass on it but that's what makes it the unique classic that it is!
I'm really intrigued to hear the rest of their discography now. If they mellow down I'm gonna miss the energy that they bring to the first four albums in their run as a band.
@@mollyesanborn You will still get some *heaviness* in their upcoming work, but it's clear that they let producers and trends in for a stronger influence than those of us who love them for their *thrash* perfection would have wanted. That said, them trying on some grunge stylings here and there may interest you, for example. I also wanted to say that To Live Is to Die is a tribute to Cliff Burton, their bassist who tragically died prior to this. All the soaring and swelling and even music box sounds and such are very moving as a tribute to him.
I'm sure you will like the Black Album which comes next but a lot of us back then didn't like it as it was kind of slow and grungy rather than the full on thrash. After that I gave up with Metallica really as it was clear they had moved away from the raw and brutal sound they were originally known for. I love to see new generations getting into the older tunes so keep up the good work!
I'm one of those weirdos who prefers 'Load' over The Black Album because it was SUCH a different vibe.
“hurr durr 90s bad”
Welcome back.
Thank you!! Glad to be back :)
In my humble opinion this is Metallica’s best album. James’ voice is deeper and more abrasive fitting the lyrical themes of political corruption and paranoia found throughout the album, and the more vulnerable emotional damage explored on Dyers Eve. The music also is their most interesting and dynamic of their 80s albums, sacrificing some of the all out speed of earlier albums for parts that are slower or mid tempo in pace which just helps to enhance and intensify the more aggressive parts, and even though the songs for the most part are very long and don’t follow conventional song structures they’re never boring. The only minor gripe I have with this album is that the bass guitar is buried under everything, but even on their prior records that was always the case as well, it’s just more infamously noticeable here, but with music this great it almost doesn’t even matter.
The remaster has the bass mixed much much better
I'd say this is Metallica's most technical album ... Which is their best is a matter of opinion. But this is definitely the most technical....
Finally you’re back again, welcome back!
Nice one!! 👏This is my fav from them, keep it up!! 👍
The most weird and wonderful metal album. If you let yourself love the sound, you’ll absolutely love the music. To Live Is To Die is a top 5 song for me.
I feel bad for you having not heard this album before. One is one of my favorite songs of all time. Great video as always love seeing your reactions. From seeing all your other reactions I highly suggest you listen to the pierce the veil album the jaws of life!
I love your narrating. You speak in a very soothing manner. Love AJfA 🤘🏻
OMG!! I missed you Molly! ☺️☺️
So excited for your reaction to metallicas (black) album 😳can’t wait😁
I'm really looking forward to hearing it!
Drum’s?
Yes, please!
My favourite Metallica album by far. MIXING BE DAMNED!
Nice reaction. Also, nice DVDs.
Welcome back!!
Oh one of my fav Metallica albums
I love the dark and metallic (kinda industrial) sound it has.
Lars at his peak
HELL YEAAAA I LOVE THIS ALBUM AS WELL!!! I would love too see your reaction to the next album The self titled Black album!!!
My favorite Metallica album of all time, and it's not really close. Favorite song on this album- Frayed Ends of Sanity. And yes, it's all better with the bass remastered in. Still. Epic. Also, your shelf has changed. i noticed because if those are all your movies then great taste :)
You should watch the official music video to "one" it's a whole different experience to the album version
The Justice album is what I coin a “Grief Album”. It was written, performed and recorded in a way where three young men carried on business as usual immediately after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. However, as people process grief , it bleeds through their everyday routine in ways they cannot fully understand. That’s why this album stands out. It’s dark gritty, and very upset and balls to the wall. And it also cries unexpectedly as it does in To live is to Die, then they let out the pain in Dyers Eve.
Justice is a very emotionally honest album. It’s a treasure
Dyers Eve is my favorite song, i love it
Please, i really want your reacción to Helloween Albums, every álbum is unique and different
Saludos desde Mexico 🇲🇽
To me this is peak Metallica. Everyone goes OFF on this album, the drums, the guitars, the vocals! The big energy and thick intensity mix perfectly with smooth lighting fast riffs and vocals. Please check out Paranoid by Black Sabbath. You'll love it!
Welcome back, I missed you. I noticed that I like your facial expression. I'm not so good at English, and I apologize if my comment is rude. I expect your reaction to black album so much.
I was just wondering where you've been! Looking forward to the video. Hope all is well! Today's request : Voivod-Nothingface. One of the most unique bands in metal history.
Yeah I dipped for a while haha, just taking a little break. Glad to be back! I will certainly add your album suggestion to the list, thank you :)
Metallica was my first metal concert for this specific album's tour. You talk about the growing start of the album then the music explodes. They did that at the live show, and when the music starts these mortar shell/explosions went off. My hearing immediately went to just high pitched tinnitus/whine so loud I couldn't even hear them even though I could see them on that stage playing. Quickly though it came back and I loved it. Though my ears rang for a day or so afterwards, but I never told my mom in case I could see them again. :)
Great reaction 👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘 also I just want to let you know that, Harvester of Sorrow that you heard is absolutely nothing compared to its live versions. It is one of the heaviest songs of all time when they play it live. And its best version is their Moscow 91 performance. You should definitely watch that performance. It's legendary 🤘🤘🤘 I never listen to the studio version, but I have 4 different live performances of it on my playlist
Live ‘Tallica is best ‘Tallica.
The start of The Frayed Ends of Sanity is used in the wizard of oz
This album was my introduction to Metallica. It will probably be forever my favorite album.
Yes and yes and then a third yes and a fourth and a fifth (and I can go on with this for hours on end, I really can).
A legendary review :)
This one is probably my favorite though I do love some of the later songs too.
Here we go ladies and gentlemen😉
:D
It's a masterclass in song writing, and probably the platinum standard for what Metal as a genre can produce.. buy boy is it mixed like dogsh*t. And you think that'd of been the end of bad Metallica mixing but they somehow toppled their efforts here with St. Anger and Death Magnetic. And I know how everyone talks about how they took Jason's bass out but honestly I find the drums harder to listen to than the lack of bass. Maybe that's because there is no bass that the drums sound extra dry but geez is it fatiguing. Excited to check out your reaction, it's a pinnacle effort in terms of musicianship.
Yeah there is no denying their talent as musicians listening to this record, I'd love to hear a version of the album that is mixed better and see how that compares.
@@mollyesanborn oh, oh we all would Molly, maybe not Lars, but those of us with hearing would love a proper remix/remaster in our lifetime.
While I agree there should have been more bass - I think the drum sound on this album is amazing. It's a major part of this album imo and what makes it a classic. I don't think this sound would've worked on any other album, tho.
@@UncleUncleRj for me it's hard to argue against the vision argument, this is what Lars wanted, apparently co-signed by James, it's their band, it's their decision. As a fan I respect that. Obviously the way Justice is mixed favors the clean tone of the guitars and some of the drum reverb (imo, it gives the album and excellent sense of drive at the cost of groove (again, imo). It's a definitive creative vision one that Jason even said should stand. What we got is the expressed intention and an artistic choice. I wholly respect that. And at the same time, I dislike it MIGHTLY. It's so dry, the drums and cymbals are so grainy and sandy that it ends up being all I hear in the reverb. I will take it however, all day every day over the nightmares that are St. Anger and Death Magnetic.
@@dasninjastix Ah. Well I also think the drums in St. Anger sound fine, the "Trash Can" snare never once bothered me... that being said, Death Magnetic is terribly mixed but I can't remember where it's available, spotify or Apple music (also Metallica website ofc) they have the completely remixed version - which sounds a million times better - uploaded to the service. I don't think it's labeled as remixed, it's just replaced the original and it sounds amazing.
This album is in many ways a multi-faceted protest album. They cover topics from "climate change" with "Blackend", to dangers of capitalism, to injustice in law and politics, to pain and trauma of war, to the mistreatment of the mentally ill. Each song exploits and exposes another injustice in our world and protest against them.
It's like a more modern day heavy metal version of a 60's protest album. Talking about the issues we face today. It's one of my favorites.
A radio station here in the philippines has the songs in this album.
Love your reactions! Hope you'll do my favourite Metallica album too, the Black Album.
I'll definitely plan on a reaction for the Black album too, can't wait to hear it!
Ewwwwwwwwww the black album
Interesting
Thanks for watching!
Nice to see ya 👋
the difference between this album and the next one is pretty big to say the least. its their most commercially successful album to date. it'll be interesting to see what you think. from here through the next few albums their sound goes through a pretty huge change before they end up circling back more towards their earlier sound. you'll see.
The next album takes a bit of a turn. I look forward to your reaction.
One is inspired and based on a movie called Johnny Got His Gun.
A great album. I remember when it was released and a lot of people didn't like the sound of it. One reviewer said it sounded like it was recorded in a matchbox. It didn't have all the big boomy reverb and echo like previous albums. I really liked, and still really like, how it sounds. There's a serious lack of Jason's bass, but I've listened to the And Justice For Jason remix, and honesty I just prefer the original release. I mean, that's the way it came out back then. It sounds how it sounds. I almost think it was a blueprint for the nu-metal scene that came about in the 90's. Tight, in your face, sounds as opposed to big boomy concert hall sounds.
Slayers South Of Heaven also came out in 1988 and is also awesome.
People give Lars a hard time these days, but back when Justice came out he changed the game. I remember repeatedly watching the video for One, and the double kicks, and being in awe. All my friends were too
Fun fact: the beginning intro is reversed guitar! I love your genuine reaction keep up the good work!
You got the Black album video coming? That's going to blow your mind.
I'll try and get to a reaction for it soon! Can't wait to give it a listen.
@mollyesanborn Let's goooooooooo! 🍻
Hope you’re doing well!
I'm not much of a fan or that into Metallica but it is nice to hear every now and then something from a band like them and go _"Oh yeah I can totally hear the influence on future bands right here."_
You NEED to start reacting to some Opeth. I’d recommend Still Life or Blackwater Park to start, but all their early records are incredible.
Great album💯
In case you didn't know track 8 "To Live is to die" was a tribute song for Cliff Burton who died on a bus crash. The spoken words near the end was Cliff's poem
This is my favorite Metallica album, and To live is to die is my favorite track. Very much agree, a masterpiece :) Used to listen to that and Orion on repeat. You should check out the video for One if you haven't, it's got clips from the movie that inspired the song, Johnny got his gun. Very dark stuff.
I would love to hear your thoughts on a Lamb of God album. Ashes of the Wake might be a good place to begin if you have not listened to them before. They are a metal band with some epic, seriously evil sounding riffs. Having followed you for a while, I think you might like them!
Also just curious, I know your mentioned your uploads would be more randon and sporadic, but do you know how often you'll be uploading? (Once a week, bi-weekly?Monthy?)
One is literally one of the best metal songs ever written.
You should check out Living Sacrifice’s Reborn Album. You won’t be disappointed.
This Album has an spezial unic Sound
Blackened and the Justice album was my intro to Metallica and heavy metal back in '89 as a g'n'r addled 14yr old.
to this day i still think Hetfield's justice amp tone is the best ever. (even without Newsted filling in the bottom end;)
Blackened is the best opening track ever.

Exodus - Bonded By Blood (1985)
Death Angel - the Ultra-violence (1987)
