Incredible to think that Cliff was 21, Kirk was 20 and James and Lars were 19 when this was recorded! The true birth of Thrash Metal!
That is very impressive, I wasn't aware they were so young when they made this record.
@@mollyesanborn you can find the footage of their early shows here and it’s funny comparing them there to how they would look around their peak in the Black Album years.
Didn’t think too much of this album when it first came out. I enjoyed more of the Black Sabbath and Judas Priest stuff as they were hitting their prime. But seeing the energy and how locked in Metallica were bringing these songs to life was incredible.
@@mollyesanborn James’s voice matures with every album because he started so young! Can’t WAIT for more! The first five are an absolute journey!
I think this album was more speed metal than thrash, but who's quibbling!!!
The song anesthesia pulling teeth is actually a bass solo! The late bassist Cliff burton used a "fuzz" wah pedal which is what gets those crazy broken up fuzzy scream sounds.
Not only that but it and Whiplash should be listened to as a single song.
oh, and he plays with his *FINGERS*
yeah, iconic song. RIP brother
Morley power wah
@@Fett316 This was actually his last song using the morley fuzz wah and then he switched to the power wah boost which is what you hear on for whom the bell tolls and ktulu
Anesthesia Pulling Teeth is a bass guitar composition ( with drums from Lars) by their late bassist Cliff Burton.
You can hear it at the beginning "Bass solo take one"
many people don't realize it's a bass not many use a wah with a bass.
@@XA351GT I mean it literally says "Bass solo take one" how can it not be any clearer.
@@ryanexsusshe didn’t realize soooo…….
the way the songs will just "change up" is why Metallica is one of the greatest bands of all time, they are known for their dynamics and they only get better in the next 3 albums. So glad your listening to them!
They're so so good at those changeups! I'm definitely excited to dive further into their music.
The transitions to the change ups are amazing too
They're really good, but let's not get carried away, lots of bands do that, it's a common technique in songwriting, and many make too much out of it like it's something unique a band is doing. Even th emost basic songs pretty much tansition from the verse to the chorus, to the bridge section, etc. The same groove or beat from start to finish would be pretty lame, though it can be done effectively.
Thank you Dave!
Early, raw Metallica ... One of the earliest "thrash" albums of the movement, it is indeed a classic, but just wait til you hear Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets..
Thank you for your review. You are wonderful.
I cannot wait to hear Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets! This debut album of theirs was fantastic so I'm sure their following albums are killer as well.
A friend introduced me to Ride The Lighting in 1990 when I was in highschool. I was hooked :)
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING WHILE WATCHING WAIT TILL YOU HEAR THE REST
The Four Horsemen was originaly called Mechanix and was written by Dave Mustaine from Megadeth before he was kicked out of Metallica. He then recorded the original version of the song under the name Mechanix for the first Megadeth album "Killing is my Business... and Business is Good!". So if you ever decide to listen to that album and you start wondering "Hey, that sounds very familiar. It reminds me of The Four Horsemen." then here's why.
though honestly the 4 horsemen is a better song.. slowed down slightly, much better lyrics and and more parts. Megadeth's best album is Rust in peace.. which is a masterpiece
@@shadowproductions969 cool opinion
@@shadowproductions969 Rust in Peace is one of the best metal records of all time. Also, agreed, The Four Horsemen is a much better song than Mechanix. Both good, TFH is better though.
@@megadeth8592 But not mine, it's never even been close for me. Mechanix all the way.
When I was young it actually took me a while to appreciate this album.
this is the only album with James's youthful vocals, you hear some of it still on ride the lightning but its crazy how quickly his voice seemed to change going from Kill em all to master of puppets
Beer and vodka 🤘🤪
It's not that he sounds super youthful, the whole album is slightly pitch shifted up.
Kill em all and RTL are both sped up slightly in post because the band listened back to the albums and wanted it faster. But even live, his voice was so young
The biggest change came after he blew out his voice on the justice tour from as he says “screaming in key”. After that he took vocal lessons, and along with some permanent damage he started singing in his natural lower register.
It's crazy how his vocals change from this to Justice
3:50 fun trivia - that guitar part that comes in during the bridge to The Four Horsemen before the solo starts is literally the opening riff to Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, just with the southern twanginess taken out.
There’s an interview where Dave Mustaine talks about how he played it as a joke when they were writing that section and Lars loved it, not realizing that he was playing a song by another band. So they tweaked it just a little bit and it went into the song.
It's crazy just how much Metallica's sound changes through the 80's and into the 90's, I definitely recommend you listen to more of their albums as the experimentation and killer riffs are really something to behold
I'll plan on doing that, I'd love to hear their evolution across all of their albums.
@@mollyesanborn Yea, I'm a 30 year Metallica fan and I really recommend listening to the albums in order. You'll see many things change, mostly very good! This will be a great series, each album just gets better and better, your mind is going to get blown.
Bob Rock plays a big role in the shift. He produced everything from The Black Album to St. Anger.
The band thought it was a good idea to collaborate with him due to his work with bands like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and Aerosmith.
@@hermunkulus The Black album was the only good thing to come from Bob imo. They should have dropped him earlier. Fidelman has appeared to have brought them back to greatness.
@@hermunkulus Probably the best idea they had
Still one of their best albums. 40 years on and still great
What ppl don't get listening to this for the first time now is that this was entirely new. You can't appreciate the impact when you've already heard 40 years worh of music started by this scene
It's still better than any other metal album in the last 40 years that wasn't by Metallica. 😉
pretty unexpected, cant wait for 'ride the lightning' and 'and justice for all'
Can't wait to hear both of those albums!
Don't forget master of puppets sandwiched inbetween.
All the first five albums are just bangers
@@Lucrei. i wouldnt agree on black album, overrated af
@@Lucrei. First 4, to be honest. That's all the 'tallica I need. And the $5.98 EP.
I know exactly where I listened to this album the first time. A friend at scholl came over during a break and told our bunch: "Guys, I have been to the record store yesterday and I bought a new LP. We meet at my place at 3pm. You have to come. No excuses. You will regret it!!!" - And he was so right, we listened to this album all together and everybody was speechless. I was totally overwhelmed. What an incredible piece of music. I'm a Metallica fan since this moment and saw them live at least 10 times.
Oh the 80ies, lots of awesome metal stuff out there. I'm sooo happy that I grew up in the 80ies
My fav from Metallica, nice that reminded you "Rust In Peace", Dave Mustaine was big part in the compositon of this album so he is also here.
I never associate the word 'fun' for kill em all but you're right. This is a fun album. Very catchy for sure.
Molly, you will be surprised how James' voice has developed over the years. It has gained so much depth and warmth.
More beautiful then ever!!! Great reaction Molly and the epic microphone did well also. 😁
If you liked this, you’re going to love Ride the Lightning 🤘
Can't wait to hear it!
Love that you're getting into some of these thrash bands, with Megadeth and now Metallica (and of course Sepultura from a while back). Thrash and speed metal is a big part of what got me into metal music in the first place.
Also a sidenote, I appreciate that if you're not really vibing with a certain aspect of a song, you don't try to make yourself like it for the audience, you actually express that it wasn't your thing or you didn't love it. That applies to all your videos
I love kill ‘em all but the next album ride the lightening is night and day, can’t wait to see your reaction to it 🤘
My favorite band that you've reviewed so far! 🔥
Oh wow what a nice surprise to see your first reaction to Metallica!!! Great video 💯 beautiful reaction 😍. Thanks for sharing this!!! 😎🤘🏼☕💯
Cool thing you did it chronologically. Looking forward to this series. Kudos.
This is my fav Metallica album =D
Yesss I love this album!! 🤘🏽 Ride the Lightning has to be next!!!!
"The Four Horsemen" has always been one of my favorite songs of all times. The rhythm brilliantly mimics the gallop of charging horses. The riff change ups are epic. I've always been a sucker for dark, biblical themes too. "Creeping Death" off of Ride the Lightning is another banger.
Oh this discography is gonna be fun to watch
Yep I'm so stoked to hear more from Metallica!
When this album came out I was a senior in high school in Seattle WA. My school district had a radio program and part of it was an after school radio show for everybody. We played "district approved" music and read news and all that student DJ stuff. I signed up for the last shift on Friday because it came with a KEY TO THE STATION and we had to lock up at 8pm.....as you might imagine, my 17-yr-old brain immediately figured out that I could smoke pot for two hours in the parking lot and then fire the station back up. We could be heard all over Seattle so I'd spin from about 10pm to 2 or 3 in the morning. Black Flag, local bands, THIS, and then weird synth-pop and just whatever we couldn't play during the day. This remains my favorite Metallica album, though. Nobody ever seemed to catch on and I have some fond memories of being the only interesting thing on the Seattle airwaves that year.
I dig these reaction videos if only because after 40 years of being around music I still get excited to hear new stuff. It's fun to watch other people get excited, too. '- )
Great reaction to a great album, Molly! Looking forward to you diving into yhe next 4 or so albums from Metallica.
Just wait till you hear the next 3 albums! I'm do hear for it! liked & subbed. Have a great one 😁
love the facial reactions whenever there was a sudden change in the music 😁
🤠
James' vocals improves through each album. The third album (MoP and my fav) sees a smoother growl quality and he still had had no formal vocal training. Wasn't too long before he blew out his voice on tour by singing and screaming every night without warming up and he thought he had ruined it forever. When he recovered, he started training it properly with a coach. Now, though he doesn't has incredible range, he is known for his distinct vocal style. Enjoy your journey!
When I first heard the first 4 Metallica albums as a kid, I couldn’t even speak English but they still blew me away. Very nice review I can’t wait to see your reviews of the other iconic albums
I absolutly love your Album Reaction videos! I love how open minded you are to this kind of music and to be true,I think I have a little crush on you because of your sweet personality! 😚🤘
Please never change that black and white intro, it's awesome.
O boy, you are now into my childhood lol. Can't wait to follow your journey into Metallica. Notifications on.
This was one of the better album reaction videos I've watched, really like the format and your takes, subscribed! This album was revolutionary when it first came out but the real revelation is the next one, Ride the Lightning; probably still the biggest leap forward a metal band has made in their sophomore record. They then perfected this new style in their third, Master of Puppets (best metal record ever in my, and many other people's, opinion). It'll be a treat to see you react to them.
You should react to cliff play anesthesia live. It's much more impressive when you see it being played imo
"Kill 'Em All" was great, but their next album "Ride The Lightning" really took them to the next level, and made them sound very sophisticated and professional.
That album introduces their first proper ballad, "Fade To Black", and the fast songs, such as "Fight Fire With Fire" and "Creeping Death", are intense as hell. Probably my favourite album.
Oh man I can't wait to hear Ride The Lightning!
You’re in for a treat! The first 3 albums with cliff burton on bass is amazing.
I’ve always heard the high pitch sound in James’s screams in Kill Em All but was never really able to explain it lol. You got it perfectly lmao
Bass solo is track 5 the fuzzy bass is Cliff Burton on his Rickenbacher guitar with lots of effects
This was recommended to me, i am new to this channel and Metallica is my favorite band. I really think you will love the album Ride The Lighting , i think it would suit your tone better. Although i didn’t plan watching this whole video, but i couldn’t stop watching so it just escalated to the end. I am happy to discover that you have also reacted to other metal bands that i listen to like Slipknot,Korn and System Of A Down luckily, so i will check those out too, keep it up!! 💙💪🏻
Fan fact: Dave Mustaine, their first lead guitarist, co-wrote "The Four Horsemen", "Jump In The Fire", "Phantom Lord" & "Metal Militia"
I love this album. I remember getting into metallica and absolutely loving the four horsemen. To this day it's still one of my favorites.
Metallica was my introduction to Metal when I was about 10yo, so it's refreshing to see you approach it from the other side - Experienced with metal but totally new to Metallica.
Their first 4 albums are widely regarded as their best, but I guess I found this first album a little too 'raw' compared to their next 3 albums, so I've not paid as much attention to Kill 'Em All.
But seeing and hearing your reactions is refreshing. This album has a raw energy that I'm really only fully appreciating for the first time now.
Can't wait for you to hear the next few albums!
4:21 "What was that?"
That....that was Cliff Burton RIP. Castro Valley, California
The track "(Anesthesia) --- Pulling Teeth" at 8:40 is actually a _bass_ solo.
Cliff Burton often did things like that - he would essentially play guitar solos on bass, and really make it sound like that. You can get a sound very much like that if you use distortion sounds and play high notes and bend the strings a lot etc.
watching your listen to these songs is as fun as hearing them back in '83
That makes me happy to hear! Glad you're enjoying the reactions :)
Please countinue with the rest of their discography... You're in for a TREAT :)
You just need to do the first five. That's all the Metallica a person needs 😎
Their first 3 albums are so good glad you're gonna run from the beginning!
Whiplash used to be my favorite Metallica song when I was a kid, now I’m more into their later albums such as And justice for all or St Anger
Don't worry, even gods must fall and die. Don't blame yourself for falling into darkness as well.
Finally, a St. Anger connoisseur
@@alvaro_sr57 I think you meant St. Anus . That album sucks sad to say. The only thing that saves it is Lulu. as the biggest steaming pile they ever recorded
@@XA351GT Lulu is not a metallica album
@@scatteredtothewinds6662 ajfa is their best album
I love this album so much. I was into punk when I first heard this album and it was such an awesome segue into thrash and speed metal. Same energy and fun!
Oh shit I can’t wait for you to react to the next 3 albums!!!!!!!
You'll notice quite a change from Kill Em All to Ride The Lightning (my personnal favorite from them). IMO a big big improvement. Buckle up ! ;) Nice reaction, as always, Molly :)
Such a great album my favorite one at that
I agree, this one is fantastic!
This was fire. Please do Ride the Lightning by Metallica and Show No Mercy by Slayer.
Glad you're enjoying the bass, savour it - Metallica have a storied history with bass (and lack thereof) which you'll see as we progress lol.
I came to this album late, kinda bounced off it initially as I was used to the justice / puppets sound they had a few albums down the line. James' vocals are definitely unique on this, he was really very young tbh - still has a lot of that abrasive grit to his screams which can be jarring now and then. Thankfully I kept returning to it and love kill em all now, the instruments alone are enough for a repeat listen lol.
Looking forward to seeing you check out the next few albums - some absolute gold there. Ps - see em live if you ever get the chance, they put on fantastic gigs.
I’m excited to see you react more to Metallica! They really do change over the next few albums and you’ll see why they are one of the greatest❤
Jump in the Fire and Seek & Destroy are my two davorires on this album and a staple on my driving playlist.
Welcome aboard the Journey of Metallica. This has been a band I have listened to my entire life. Kill em all has to be in my top 5 favorite debut albums of all time and a great way to start the Metallica experience. Next up, Ride the lightning! My favorite Metallica album.
Yessss welcome to the metallica Journey♥️
James was like 18 years old when they recorded this, hence the higher pitched vocals :-)
This album rules!! Track 5 Anathesia (Pulling Teeth) it's Cliff on Bass!
Lucky girl! We all get one shot at hearing Kill 'em All for the first time.
Here's my story. Summer of 1997. I''m living with my grandparents. I'm 14 and I get my first job working for a farmer who was also I family friend. My first paycheck I earned was about $500. So my granparents and I one Sunday drive 50 miles into the big city of Enid, Oklahoma. I wanted to get a couple of new cassettes because my Walk-Man was WEARING OUT the 4 tapes I DID own,
Flesh and Blood by Poison
Kiss Alive 3
Ted Nugent Double Live Gonzo
And Load by Metallica
I settled on The Black album and Kill 'em All after spending about an hour in Sam Goody. After we had supper and drove home, I was sitting in the backseat of my Grandparents' '96 Town Car. I popped Kill em All into my Walk-Man and proceeded to melt my brain with awesome. I wanted to thrash so badly but my grandparents would have taken my Walk-Man away from me so I had to sit still like I was listening to Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor address. When I got home and took my shower that night, I noticed something new; I had hair on my balls.
Most fitting description of this album I've come across is the word feral! This band has evolved and changed up their sound throughout their career, some successful (having a ballad, Fade to Black, on a thrash metal album) and others maybe not so much (cough, LuLu). But credit where credit is due, they've had the guts to try it.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I do think James' vocals are the weakest part of this album, but it's still so good! The next two albums are my personal favorites, so it will be interesting to see your opinion on them. His vocals definitely improve.
Great review, you have a new sub 👍
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the channel :)
Damn, can’t wait for the Ride the Lightning reaction! The growth in Metallica in just one year between albums is quite astonishing.
I love you, hope you have fun on this journey. Its a long one... btw this and justice..everytihing before the black album favororite?
I can’t wait for you to get to Ride the Lightning. The way they progressed so quickly on the next album is amazing. While I like Kill Em All, RTL is sooo much better.
If you do the other albums I will absolutely watch all of those. Subscribed. I have been live breathe and die Metallica since I was 10 years old
Actually in the track Anesthesia it is a bass guitar all along the way :)
The album that started the big 4 of thrash metal and the first true thrash metal album.
Tengo ganas de que escuches los siguientes álbumes y digas tu favorito jeje 🤗
Thanks for the share! Looking forward to the discog vids! Great concept!
This was 10th-11th grade for this kid!🤘
A respectful FYI, Anastesia (Pulling Teeth)’s only ‘lyrics’ are :
“Bass solo, take one…”
That’s Sir Clifford Lee Burton, playing a distorted 4-string, with a “Wah” pedal!🔥👍
James Hetfield had no intention of being Metallica’s lead singer…it just fell to him.
Kudos to Kirk Hammett, his solos are practically an audition… he replaced the departing Dave Mustaine right before this album’s recording!😎
Can't wait for you to do Ride the Lightning!
Coincidence, I've been listening to this album and adding several tracks to my after hours work playlists for the last week. Been feeling old school thrash!
Can't wait to see you listen to their next few albums (especially Master of Puppets) it only really goes up from here imo.
yay! more metallica!!
Molly you rock! 🤟
This was my first metal tape, damn i listened to this so much during my time in highschool.
Brings back memories.
Some speed metal bands , Agent Steel , Riot City , Rocka Rollas, 3 inches of blood. A.D.X.
I love this album, my favorite of theirs. SO fast, just burns everything. And my favorite song Anesthesia/ Pulling Teeth..like my Favorite song ever...song? Instrumental..
i dont know when it happened, but blitzkrieg & am I Evil disappeared from this album. I know they were cover tracks. But they were on all the electra releases of kill em all from 1986 through the 90s. Until the internet came along i never knew this album to be without those tracks. In particular because Am I Evil was played at every show in the 80s.
I only saw one person mention, but this is a re-release of the album that cut two cover tracks they did. Blitzkrieg and Am I Evil covers are absolutely mindblowingly good. You should check them out and do an addendum.
those little "laser beam effects" are just their fingers on the strings making scraping noises as they move up and down the fret board. :)
My favorite channel
At some point, you have to get White Zombie. A gem of an early 90's band, crazy interesting music and groovy riffs. Fun music all around
Mustaine being kicked out early 83 formed his new band and in 85 put out their first record Killing is my Business ... and Business is Good ! It would be cool to compare .
This album taught me how to play Thrash/Speed Metal guitar, which has techniques far more demanding than normal guitar playing (say, for example, The Beatles or the Rolling Stones). If you can master the riff of "Metal Militia", you can take on pretty much any riff by any band in Metal history. Kill 'Em All might not be Metallica's best album (from terms of songwriting nor production) but it's crucial listening.
My English ain't the most accurate, but still: Track number 5 is Anesthesia-Pulling Teeth'. It's an electric bass guitar taken to its absolute limits by the late virtuoso Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. It's what you call 'Distorted high register leading bass'. That's why it sounds like a guitar, since its mostly played on the highest register of the bass. That's the reason why it sounds way more massive and expansive than a guitar. Those screaming sounds and fuzzy tone were due to the Rickenbacker 4001 electric bass guitar being wired through a series of effect pedals, sustain/delay pedal, wah pedal, etc. There is also a hidden guitar pickup fixed into the bass just near the bass pickups. It was Cliff's secret weapon and could be turned on or off as he wished, also contributing into the 'lead bass tone'.
Speaking about the actual composition, it's mostly classically influenced mainly from those Bach- Baroque period. Cliff used inspirations from those that sounds like a melodic sense and ornamentation (wiggling around with notes) in the leading bass solo. Starting with alternating D minor and C major arpeggios, it then sets off into E minor, then F major and goes on into a development which is also composed of many melodic arpeggio progressions. It then bursts of into a high note, then comes the percussion part, which is just pure metal madness and thrash.
Percussion part ending is signalled by a tapped bass harmonics outro. Then there is a 'coda', which is just brutality on bass. All kinds of string pulling, scratching, take place.
This composition is considered to be one of the absolute greatest bass solos of all time. Nobody, especially in the 80s, figured out how to get such a Loud, brutal, midrangey sound out of a bass, therefore completely changing the way people think about the electric bass guitar. It became more of a 'lead' instrument, along with being a main rhythm instrument. It is the summation of what Cliff had studied upto that point, his musical experience, his classical music theory knowledge, etc. It also proved to the world that Cliff Burton is a loud, classically trained virtuoso and could take his instrument into limits and even break those limits. Anyways congratulations on listening to a completely new sound, you are going to hear it's advanced stuff in the next 2 albums....
my favorite band
Can't wait to hear more from them!
You are in for one heck of a ride. Enjoy!
I've been a metallica fan ever since their second album. I didn't appreciate this album until way later in my life. The punk roots are very evident here, but its the next album that really solidified their sound for the next couple of albums.
haha!! nice one!! This one was always a little punk for my taste (albeit freaking good)
from next one on, you'll never be the same as the quintessential metal starts taking over your soul 😈🤘
anesthesia is incredible, it‘s a bass solo
Those incredible transitions are all thanks to Cliff Burton. The man was one of a kind.
And Dave
You really shoud do the "None" Ep by Meshuggah. It's their debut EP, it's very infuenced by Mettalica early records like Kill 'em all, but with that technical jazzy groove early Meshuggah touch ;)
Hell yeah! 🤘🏻🔥
