Absurd work of fiction. Why would someone named Jeff, who got more than he could ever need, hoard happiness from others? Next you'd be telling me he wished that others were unable to pee.
I know! This is the most unrealistic thing, imagine a planet with people like that!? Nothing would get done, they'd be so underdeveloped and inefficient
If i had a nickel for every time i got obsessed with a song about Jeff Bezos, i'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
This is the absolute most brilliant song I've heard in a very long time. A friend sent it to me and I started listening without knowing the context or what it was about, and it literally made me cry. What an emotional rollercoaster.
Sure. Like how we feel entitled that elders should be treated well. Entitled that children should have the best. Entitled that are neighbours are treated fairly. Entitled that even strangers are treated fairly. Because more than anything, humans have this curious expectation that the world be Just and Fair. And if too many social compacts that uphold that illusion are broken, sometimes it all comes crumbling down.
[Lyrics] Jeff found a genie in a bottle who said, “I can give you anything you ask. You can have your wishes, three, and a million more for free, it's unlimited just set me to the task.” Well, Jeff thought awhile, said, “I want houses. I want boats, I want fancy modern art. I want tickets to the MET, I want my own private jet, and a rocket into space just for a start!” Well, the genie waved her arms and made it happen. His every wish bolted from the blue. And folks all over town grew enamored, gathered ‘round, to admire the man who wishes had come true. They said, “Let's hear it for the man who has everything. By good fortune he was set so far apart. Yeah let's hear it for Jeff who’s got everything. ‘Cause his wishes are only at the start.” Well, Jeff heard their shouts and he grew worried. He said, “Everybody’s getting in my way.” The genie smiled as before, “You've got a million wishes more, you can even give a bunch of them away.” Well, Jeff got confused and sorta quiet. 'Til he finally said, “I have just one wish more. I am satisfied, so I wish that you would die, so you cannot grant wishes anymore.” Well, the genie's eyes got big and sad and shiny. ‘Til she finally said, “Your wish is my command.” And with an effervescent sigh she disappeared before his eyes and no wishes were ever granted there again. So let's hear it for the man who has everything. By good fortune he was set so far apart. Yeah let's hear it for Jeff who's got everything. Every single f*cking thing except a heart.

I love how a lot of your songs share this melancholy, but you as a narrator add a tone, a voice, an intention. And I love how in this you start neutral, almost sympathetic, and become angry as the song progress. It's well written, subtle, and very well performed. You are very good at this :)
This is why music is so important. This song manages to capture such powerful emotions, and deliver a biting criticism in so few words, but you can still _feel_ the sting of it.
@@crazycaucasian9342 the fact he kills the genie. if you didn't realize it was about Bezos at the beginning that would be the moment you realize what the song is actually about.
Sure, you hear this song and think Jeff is awful. But after listening to it a few time I just feel really sad for the genie who just wanted to grant wishes and make people happy.
Found this through a tumblr link. Loved the song, kinda reminds me of last week when my girlfriend and I were just talking about climate change and getting more depressed by the minute. A bunch of rich dudes are destroying the planet and we the teenagers and young people are aware enough to notice and yet powerless to stop them.
This is such an amazing song. The first time I heard it I almost cried I felt so bad for the genie. What a twist. I love the variation on the chorus on the end.
I am just here to comment on this classic before ten thousand more people do. There is one thing Jeff does not have and will most likely never have, the ability to create art that touches another human beings heart. That makes Jeff kind of poor.
@@jojoceda It would, but even if he didn't he chose to go to space rather than feed the entire planet 5 times. He spent 5.5 billion dollars to go to "space" instead of end world hunger. How great is that? Glad he had fun though

I listened to this song and "Dear God". I found myself wracking my brain wondering who you remind me of, not in a derivative sense but more of a "feel". Instantly though Woody Guthrie springs to mind. Specifically with how he could be cheerfully melancholy with some of his songs. Either way this was absolutely fantastic and you're music should be heard by many more people.
I love that, if you could translate this song and sing it to someone from a hundred, or a thousand, or ten thousand years ago, they would more or less understand *exactly* what it means.
This song has been on my mental loop for almost 48 hours now. It's fantastic. I don't play guitar, but I know people who do, and I'm definitely going to be passing this along.
I've bought this, I've tweeted this, I've reblogged it, and just this very moment I played for a friend who teared up listening. Philip, you have written *the* most perfect folk song every.
True art! Can't wait to hear what else you've got inside! I think the more infuriating part is that the metaphorical genie is still alive and more powerful than ever. He can choose to use his wealth for the benefit of society, but instead uses it destructively.
The only thing I could wish more from this video is being able to see your other hand so I can learn to play this! I've done it by ear but it's not quite the same chord-wise. Love this song so much

I feel like I can hear some real fucking anger in the final in the refrain. Its nice.

Agreed. I heard it without context and then it suddenly hit.
I feel like, in the centuries to come, historians will look back and point to a song like this, when trying to capture the feelings of the age.
"...feelings of the rage!!" more like!!
Bold of you to assume we have any centuries left. Thanks Jeff!
And that feeling is entitlement?
Sure.
