    Hey Mike! That was an amazing video! I've always wondered about skip chain. Looking forward to trying it myself! Extra points for cutting in deep snow!❄️❄️❄️

      Thanks John. Didn't notice a big difference in the cut. But it sure is nice to sharpen !

    It worked although probably not perfect in every situation. Good info on the pros and cons 👍

    I've run skip tooth for years on my 36" bar on my 460 mag. Haven't used a smaller bar than that with skip tooth chain. Good video mike. Hope alls well in your neck of the woods 💚🌳👊👍

    I haven’t ran a skip tooth in a while but when I did I liked it! Easier to sharpen👍👍

    Mike your run down of the pro v con for a running a skip tooth chain are spot on. Assuming we all follow safe saw operation practices and wear PPE… put keeping in mind when brushing out a felled tree that you may be in the danger zone if you cut a limb horn, burl, knotty section or other section of fling-able wood and gravel. Ask Chris and Kenny about the impression it can make on a feller 😂😮

    • @Lifeinthe906
      @Lifeinthe906  Рік тому

      I try to be mindful of tension in the wood and do the best I can when it comes to safety. The tops being under the snow also makes it more challenging.

      @@Lifeinthe906 Yep your approach looks well thought out and deliberate. My comments were more to the end that the skip tooth chain makes catching shrapnel more of a real risk when felling, limbing, and bucking up trees in the woods. Chris had a chunk hit his shin and still fly across the new Woodyard. I’ve been dinged before despite my best efforts

      @Canvas Man OH man the shin is not fun!!

    Good job👍👍.Very similar experience as I had. You might be happier with the skip on the harder wood, I was tempted to take the rakers down but scared it would make it too grabby when limbing🤷‍♂️

      @Lifeinthe906  Рік тому

      Thanks Andrew. I thought about taking the rakers down for a minute then decided to try it like it is for a bit.

    I think using a full skip chain on any bar over 20" on a 50cc saw is good advice. If I were using an 18-20" bar, I would stick with a full-comp chain. A full-skip for a 24" bar makes sense (especially on hardwood like oak), but I agree that the difference is not going to be drastic!

      It definitely makes sharpening a lot faster. I'm gonna run it for a while got lots of hard maple to cut .

    I just bought a skip tooth chain 28” for the MS 500i. Will be interesting to see how it does and how it runs. It is probably just me, but your’s sounded like it was hitting higher rpm’s …..look forward to seeing what you think after running it awhile Mike. Especially after using it on some real solid hardwood. Appreciated the video 👍🪵⛓🪚👏🤜🏼❄️🤛🏼 Rick

    Lol I literally just watched your other video on this earlier this morning 😂😂 I'm curious was a 24" bar available in the smaller size chain or was that why you switched to the 3/8 chain I've been wanting to get a 550xp and would like a 24" bar as it's my favorite size

    • @Lifeinthe906
      @Lifeinthe906  Рік тому +1

      Hey Adam. I believe the longest bar in .325 I could find was 20". I did want to switch to the 3/8 chain anyway because I run that same chain on my 2165 jred. The 550XP Mark ll has been a great saw.

    Interesting you didn't report any problem with full chain on 4" "oversized' bar. Can understand it, my pre 'rancher'' 450 has no prob with full 20" only 3.2 vs 4 HP! 550XP M II looks bad to the bone. Maybe skio chain if 28" bar?
    Skip chain advantage: less teeth to sharpen.

      I have run 24 inch skip. I would try a 28 but I don't have one. I'm real happy with the 550

    I have never ran a skip tooth! I’m on the fence whether you gain anything 🤷‍♂️ I bet they would be good if ya had to do some noodling? Then again what do I know I’ve never ran one😂 Thanks for the info Mike👊🏻

      I'm not a fan of the skip tooth. It's about worn out then I will go back to the full comp.
