  • Directed by Robert Aldrich and with a cracking music score by Gerald Fried, this is one of the best action movies of the late 60's. The stellar cast is lead by Cliff Robertson and Michael Caine and a veritable rogues gallery of British character actors in support.

    Such a great film, the characters are great and the ending is a real edge of your seat
    ending!!
    And unusual to see a War film about British troops fighting the Japanese when so
    used to movies against the Germans.

      There are only two things I don't like about the movie; one is that the Japanese are not really evil enough - the soldiers were conditioned to be so with brutality, even the officers; ''good Japanese'' soldiers were rare in reality - and the location was a weird choice. The New Hebrides didn't see much action in the war, especially with a Scottish regiment, which wouldn't be so bad because the regiment is fictional, but it is way out for the British... they should have made it a fictional island off Java. If ever they remake it, I think they should do so, or make it set in Madagascar and replace the Japanese with the Vichy French.
      Other than those problems, it is a great movie!

      @@kyriakospentheides The film should’ve been set in Java or Burma.

      @@commando4481 Yeah, the New Hebrides was a strange choice. I think Burma would take away from it being on an island, though, and I also think the island should probably be a fictional one off Java to give the writers the same freedom they had with the script (and to keep the setting smaller), but if not a fictional island, then Java itself would be great.

      @@kyriakospentheides That’s true. I mean there were islands off the coast of Burma that could’ve been used such as Aykab that had a Japanese airfield on it.

      @@commando4481 Oh, yeah, Aky
      ab and the battle for that airfield in the Arakan campaign would be a great backdrop for a remake of this otherwise great movie. :-)

    Has been shown on TV with the alternate title "Suicide Run". Cliff Robertson was filming this movie and missed out attending the Oscars when he won that year for "Charly".Some other trivia Michael Caine was filming Jaws the Revenge and missed attending the Oscars when he won for "Hanna and Her Sisters".Henry Fonda who is in this movie too was to ill to attend the Oscars when he won for "On Golden Pond".

    Great film. Probably highly influenced the BATTLE comic in the UK with its gritty storylines and acerbic characters. I actually prefer this to The Dirty Dozen which also a good film. But I prefer the more cynical edge and hardened anti war message. It's a great film. I watched most of it on DVD after years of not watching it but plan to watch it in full today. Love the music. Thankfully, the copy I have has the original ABC Pictures Corp logo preceding the opening titles and not some modern shite they tack on like that awful Studio Canal ident. I first saw this film late one night on BBC1 one weekend - when they bothered to put great old films on after the late News over 20 years ago.

    Watched the movie for the first time and it's amazing how the last scene is similar to the run-for-life moment in Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto". I wonder it was done deliberately, perhaps as a form of a tribute or if it was just a matter of having the same idea.

    • @kyriakospentheides
      @kyriakospentheides 3 роки тому

      I think 'Apocalypto' was referencing 'Naked Prey' or 'Run of The Arrow', but the similarity to this is there.

    • @kyriakospentheides
      @kyriakospentheides 3 роки тому

      There are not too many, sadly. And most sanitize the Japanese somewhat, except for 'Men Behind The Sun' (actually a well made movie, dare I say a great one, but I wouldn't suggest watching it actually)... in fact most movies about the subject focus on war crimes against the Japanese (stealing gold teeth from their bodies etc.) rather the fact that Imperial Japan was the most inhuman and brutal of all the major powers in WWII.
