What I appreciate about Al Green's recordings, especially those recorded with Willie Mitchell, is the way he places such immense, soulful effort into every line, every word and every syllable. He works every syllable quite differently. That takes a lot of thought and a lot of doing. On "Could I Be the One?" the smooth backing singers don't do this and they don't have to but they serve a vital role in contrasting with Al's fabulous delivery. Simply beautiful.
I've always loved and appreciated that contrast. The backing (barbershop style) singers stay "fixed" and allow Al to squeeze and milk out every croon to add such dynamism in this track. It's so refreshing to hear him come in late or early and just make the damn thing work!
...and don't forget the instruments. The continuous strings that start introducing that organ is amazing. Not to mention the subtle brushwork on that snare building up to the fills and flourishes. Amazing.
