  • What exactly is a “bug-out rifle”? At its core, a bug-out rifle is one that when things go wrong - terribly wrong - you know you can grab that rifle and be prepared. It could be used to hunt for food, or to defend your life. In a sense, it’s that one rifle that can help you survive a possible apocalypse-type scenario.
    But what should you choose? There are plenty of options out there, from something as simple as a bolt-action rifle, to as sophisticated as a cutting-edge AR rifle with all the bells and whistles. It all comes down to what your needs are, your budget, and what best fits those parameters.
    For us, we like a heavy-hitting .308 rifle, preferably in a semi-automatic configuration and in a proven design. Also, we’d like it in a reasonably compact and handy package. With those parameters set, we can’t think of anything better than the M1A Scout Squad from Springfield Armory.
    A timeless design inspired by the U.S. Military’s rugged M14 rifle, this robust rifle packs a powerful round capable of taking practically every game animal you’d face here in the continental United States. There is likely not a role the M1A Scout Squad can’t fill well.
    The point of the bug-out rifle might seem simple in concept, but it’s a bit more complex in execution. Think about it. You may have to hunt for food, and/or defend your life or your family’s life. And you would have to do all this with one rifle. You can’t pack multiple rifles, so you have to select one that can cover all your bases.
    With the dual need of potentially having a rifle that is for hunting as well as self-defense, a semi-automatic model makes a lot of sense. And how many “fighting rifles” out there are capable of taking the largest North American game while also being a capable - and practical - self-defense rifle? Not many.
    With the M1A Scout Squad model, you get a short and handy 18” barrel that combines compact dimensions with still capable ballistic performance. The rifle is offered with either a walnut stock or a lighter black synthetic stock - the latter is the one we personally picked.
    It’s an easily handy rifle with the shorter barrel, yet still a good length for the .308 cartridge. Along with the shorter barrel and overall length, it makes this rifle lighter. A light rifle is a must in the hunting woods, whether it’s the mountains or low land brush thickets. With the M1A Scout Squad and its shorter overall length, it can also still defend a home or a building in an “end of days” scenario.
    What you need to take into consideration is in a bug-out-type situation, it’s likely no one is coming to help you. You are your own first responder. The round this rifle shoots, the .308, has proven itself as being very effective for self-defense or hunting. The .308 caliber round packs the punch to stop threats in their track with one shot, or take a game animal with one well-placed vital shot. The ammo is readily available anywhere across the United States and would be far more plentiful than other less-mainstream, more specialized calibers if ammunition became scarce.
    Lastly, the robust operating system of the M1a will stand up to a lifetime of abuse and keep on running. The polymer stock of our test model can be abused and still maintain its integrity. Growing up, we had a good friend of our father who served in the Vietnam War and was issued an M14. He praised the M14’s action for its reliability and ability to operate, no matter what the conditions. He told us the bolt of the M-14/M1a could be kicked open or closed if caked with mud and grime after reloading and it would just keep on operating. If this isn’t a testament to its ability to withstand the worst of conditions, I don’t know what is.

    My great uncle Larry carried an M14 in Nam. Even when they switched over to the M16, he still stuck with his M14. When he got back to civilian life, he picked one up, and that's what he used all the time for hunting.

    Another good argument is the fact that it is the same length and weight as an M-16A2. Better sights, better hitting power, better range. Extremely robust. Mine has never had an actual malfunction. Its easy to hit with and what it hits stays hit.

    The M1A would probably be my last choice. I’ve shot a lot of NRA high power matches with them over the years constantly loosing to AR’s so I’m not some sort of hater. They can be a major pain in the ass to mount optics accurately on including the scout versions with fixed mounts. They aren’t nearly as robust as you stated simple because they no longer use milled receivers. Springfield switched to cast a long time ago. The magazines are another weak point between price, availability, and easy to find without the internet. There are other makers who still used milled receivers and better barrels then SF but they still have all the other issues. If I were to choose a .308 for a buyout rifle (I wouldn’t) then I’d take a solid DD defense AR10 style rifle or possible even the new Ruger SF .308 rifle any day.

    • @HuntFishShootChannel
      @HuntFishShootChannel  Рік тому +5

      Fair enough, however this receiver is not cast. They are still forged receivers. Maybe a minute they did that but not currently. Magazines can be a weak point and to get legitimate good ones they will cost. I’m disappointed though, not to egg you on but all that money you are gonna be spending on an AR10 which are likely better or more accurate in occasions and you are going to get a DD? What about other brands which are not only cheaper but shoot better and from far more prolific rifle makers? Like Seekins SP10! Thanks for you input!!! I love seeing different opinions and thought out responses

    • @thegreenman2030
      @thegreenman2030 Рік тому

      @@HuntFishShootChannel Hmm I’m not sure about them being forged.they have been cast for well over two decades and were the last I had my hands on a new one in 2019. Unless they changed something over the last two years but I doubt it. All Fulton Armory and some JRA rifles are forged which is why they come at a premium. I mentioned DD because I know they make a solid product and you can get shorter barrel options in .308. I’m not caught up in brand names, for me it’s if it works or not and filled a niche. Picking a bugout rifle requires a ton of thinking before you buy, our needs are probably different. The region, terrain, as well as your level threat and fitness all come into play. I lived in the mountain of NE PA until October of this year. Dense forests, hilly rocky terrain dictate everything. A guy in Montana or in New Jersey is going to be dealing with something completely different. I think most people could get by with a decent AR with a 1x6 LVPO and a good 70-77 grain bullet for pretty much everything in most cases like mine. The .223 is nice because of the huge selection of ammo that can take anything from squirrels to mid size elk. Weight of your gear will dictate everything in my opinion. If we are bugging out I want as much ammo as possible and I can carry more with a lighter round, and having a lighter rifle will make a massive difference.

    Another great option for close-range patrolling and guard duty in the various martial law towns that will inevitably pop-up in a real SHTF scenario is the old M1 Carbine.
    If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a gorgeous, modern Fulton Armory M3 Scout with pictanny rail (basically a modern, improved variant of the old WWII M1 Carbine!!!🙌) I promise that you won’t be disappointed in its manufacturing quality and range performance!!!
    It’s very expensive yes, but you cannot find a better intermediate carbine of old, time-tested design!
    Fulton Armory also gave my M3 Scout an improved trigger and trigger-group, and I paid extra for a chrome-lined barrel for added corrosion resistance!
    6 to 10, 15 round stick magazines, an AIMPOINT red-dot optic with quick magnification and brightness controls......she only weighs 6lbs to 6.5lbs overall with everything.......😏

    Great video! Solid break down on why you would chose the M1A Scout for your “survival rifle”. I am leaning more towards the SiG Spear MCX in .308 with 13” barrel though. Much easier to mount accessories too, especially since I run NVG’s. LPVO, IR laser, and a light. I also would use the SiG suppressor for it. This would give me a compact package, still able to deal with human threats, while having the ability for game hunting. I am not looking to engage threats at 400-500 yards away either. I want to run from gunfights, and only engage if forced too. If I am engaged in a gunfight at those ranges, the I messed up bad and got surrounded.

    I chose an m1a loaded as my bug our rifle of choice. For all of the reasons stated in this video. The 22” barrel is more than accurate. Cumbersome in urban settings and looses points for being heavier. The barrel not being parkerized is one of the main reasons. Having said all that, I can’t think of a better weapon system I’d rather take into a bug out situation.

      Using your firing hand and leaving the support hand to charge or rack the bolt works really well. On a reload, bring the weapon into retention and make the seating of the mag deliberate to ensure it’s seated properly, then roll support hand to the forearm while simultaneously using your right or fire hand to rack the bolt. Hope this makes sense! Maybe soonish we can do some reloads or instructional type material for it!

    I'm wanting to get a "do it all rifle" and I've really been looking at an M1A. My son and I are starting to deer hunt and in the future may start hunting black bear. I know .308 is a good round for deer and have been told it'll handle bear as well. I know a lot of people get hung up on AR rifles but they really don't appeal to me. I just love the looks of an M1A and from what I've seen, they seem to perform very well. I just gotta get past the fact that I'm going to drop well over $1000 for a basic M1A but I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. I feel this rifle would serve myself and my son well in the future.

      The round itself is capable of far more, but when you bring the shorter barrel and lack of optics, range is diminished for ethical kills on animals. Effectively making hits at distances greater than 200 with only iron sights, during stress is harder as well. It can be done, yet more focus and NM type shooting to 800 yards under stress or hunting is impractical with iron sights. Add an optic and it’s a different ball game.
      In regards to your question Allen, Number 2 would likely be an AR platform in 308, or some larger caliber. 308 is a great caliber for its range, stopping power and relatively low recoil.
      A bolt gun in a scout variant or even 18-20 inch barrel length is another great option, or heck even a good 45-70 lever action is a good option as well, however they aren’t as reliable as people think. There’s a sub set of people making them tactical but I have used them and on occasion they don’t feed or they don’t eject like you want to, add dirt, water or snow and ice and it’s a debacle.
      A 12 gauge with slugs buck and bird shot can fill many rolls, especially when equipped right!

    AR-10 is functionally superior in every way. The M1A is actually the least useful of the battle rifle clones. The M14 was always an abomination, and Springfield cuts enough corners on the design with the M1A to make it really only suited to novelty. I got tired of parts rattling loose and falling off of my M1A, so I bought an Aero Precision M5. The Aero has been more reliable, more durable, more accurate, easier to maintain and work on, and it was less expensive initially. The M1A doesn't have a single advantage over a decent AR-10. Not one.

    • @HuntFishShootChannel
      @HuntFishShootChannel  Рік тому

      Not one single advantage? The beauty of personal opinions. I would be the first to admit, there are some great AR10 options on the market now, the Aero wouldn’t be my first choice, but again personal opinion and choice is the beauty of it. Pick what works best for you.

    • @MTMILITIAMAN7.62
      @MTMILITIAMAN7.62 Рік тому

      @Hunt Fish Shoot Not one single advantage. The M14 is not more reliable than the AR/M16, and never has been. Going clear back to 1968 when Congress was tired of hearing about two potentially defunct rifles and wanted to know where the people's money had gone, since US Ord Corps gad dumped $100 million and 13 years into the M14 alone. In 1968, they tested the pre-A1 "Mattel death trap" M16 with both types of powder against the M14 in Panama, pitting the rifles together in several different environments. The M14 was unable to prove that it was conclussively more reliable than even the pre-A1 M16. Congress chose the M16 and the debacle of the M14's development and adoption became such a scandalous cluster fuck and an embarrassment that it took both Springfield Armory and US Ord Corps down with the ship.
      The M14 is not more durable. During development and initial production, nearly everything on the M14 would rattle loose; gas cylinders, flash suppressors, heat shields. Independent testing confirmed vast quantities of M14s failed to meet specs for tolerances. Several batches of receivers failed heat treating, cracking or resulting in soft bolts that lost headspacing.
      The M14 is not more accurate. In fact, the M14 isn't all that intrinsically accurate by the standards of a battle rifle. Acceptable accuracy standards were eventually increased to 5 MOA just to allow enough of them to pass to get them issued. Turning the rifle into a match rifle is an expensive and labor intensive process that requires constant maintenance. The people who build the National Match and M21 rifles typically hate them because they are finicky, temperamental guns that require an intricate balance to be achieved. Hence the reason the M21 was replaced by the bolt action M24 and the M14s were replaced in competition by the AR15.
      The M14 couldn't pass any test without standards being lowered and the competition being sabatoged. Springfield and US Ord Corps lied and cheated to get the M14 adopted. This debacle cost American lives and butt loads of taxpayer dollars. Then on top of the issues inherent to the M14 as an abomination of a service rifle that failed to stay in front line service for half the time it took to develop it, Springfield Armory cuts corners to reduce cost. They bought the rights to the name Springfield Armory, which ironically went out of business because of the debacle of the M14's development and adoption, so that they could claim prestige through association that they couldn't earn selling half assed knocks offs. This is why M1As are 1/3 the cost of forged receiver milspec M14s like LRB.
      I had the gas cylinder on my M1A rattle loose and start stringing vertically about 6 MOA at about 1000 rounds. I sent it to Springfield to have a unitized gas cylinder installed only to have the bolt roller fall off within a dozen rounds of getting it back from them. That is when I did some research beyond boomer anecdotes and discovered Springfield Bolt Roller Impact Defect. Turns out Springfield's investment cast alloy receiver is not "just as good." Not that our issue rifles faired much better. We were issued M14s in bedded McMillan stocks as DMRs. The open receivers invited sand and grit into the FCG, and the grease required for the bolt roller and other critical components held sand and became a gritty sludge that locked the rifles up tight. Abd were weren't allowed to remove them from their stocks for fear of damaging the bedding and ruining the rifle's accuracy, so once the rifle went Tits Up, it was done for. We ended up taking the Leupold off of our M14s and putting them on an A4, then calling that our DMR, because while 5.56 M855 is a poor substitute of 7.62 M118LR, we could at least keep our M16s in the fight. Later, we happily traded in our M14s for Mk 12s. Because the M14 has not one functional advantage over an AR15/M16. This is not a conjecture based on subjective opinion. This is based on actual experience with the rifles as issued and by empirical fact accrued by decades of testing and research. Most of the "service" seen by M14s after Vietnam was the rifles literally rattling around in the back of Humvees with rolls of Cope Long Cut and cases of bottled water.
