It is said director Shin Sang-ok may have voluntarily gone to North Korea, censorship in South Korean movie industry and government interference at the time made it difficult for his company 'Shin Films' to continue in the 1970s.
In 2006 Shin died due to liver complications. They had been married twice, for a total of 45 years. At the time of his death, he was planning to make a musical about Genghis Khan.
Choi died in hospital on April 16th, 2018, from kidney failure. She was 91 one years old. On news of her death, there was widespread mourning as she had become seen as a much loved national icon.

Fun fact, since it was Toho directly who was duped into creating Pulgasari, the suit actor who played the kaiju was Kenpachiro Satsuma. He played Godzilla for all of the Heisei series (1984-1995), as well as a few other kaiju in the 70's. So Pulgasari got a pretty high profile treatment.

Owned 15,000 movies in 1978? That's fairly impressive.
Betamax had only been around for 3 years and VHS for 1 year. Home video wasn't a thing yet, though the first video stores were open.
I expect most of those were actually on film stock.
Now days that wouldn't be as impressive, due to dvd and especially digital formats.

If this story was made into a movie, nobody would believe this really happened.
The documentary "The Lovers and the Despot" will have you on the edge of your seat! It's a brilliant documentation of the abduction of the famous South Korean actress and movie director by the North Korean dictator. I saw it a couple of years ago on Netflix, so not sure if it's still on there now. Anyway, I just remember shaking my head in disbelief. It felt like I was watching a movie and not a documentary because it's such a wild story.
