I checked out the labels for both the Japanese and American one and they were indeed written in different serving sizes. The Japanese 230 kcals for the whole 500ml whereas the American 140 kcals is for 240ml or 8 fl oz. That’s about 291 kcals total for the American 500ml. And yes, the extra calories are likely from the amount of sugars. They both use high fructose corn syrup, the only difference is that American one has more sugars at 68.75g/500ml compared to the Japanese one at 55g/500ml so that checks out.

I've only had Calpico (never been to Japan). I can safely admit that I love it quite a bunch.

I miss the concentrated version...haven't found it in the US, not even at dedicated Japanese markets.

America usually uses corn based products while a bunch of other countries don't use corn based products, and they're probably also produced in different manufacturing facilities

I did think back in the day, US Calico had the same formula. And now it’s sweeter and more watery.
And their secret? Corn syrup, it’s a sweetener and has a silkier mouthfeel. Japan’s junk food isn’t healthier, not just calories but the extent that they use corn in their junk food.
There are regional changes, as foreign products are tested by their countries FDA, and companies want to be successful so they do their market research. The simple solution into the US market is to add sugar to it lol.

The calories, are you sure you read them right? Is it possible the American one if for half a bottle instead? If it's sweeter and doesn't contain artificial sweeteners, it should be higher in calories.

Recently the standard calpico in america has more of a strong tangy flavor but the calpico soda cans still taste like Japanese calpis

Betting they used artificial sweeteners in the American one too because the calories are so much lower.
