It felt like they were supposed to get season 10 but halfway through s9 shooting they got the information that it need to end there. The whole season was about barney and robin's marriage and then they got divorced at the last hour of the show. I mean come on the last too episodes were to big of a time skip and it made it feel meaningless. The ending would make a total sense if it would happen after season 2 or 3 when robin and ted were a thing. But because barney and robin became the endgame it felt unresonable to divorce them.

The fact that he ended up alone and has to spend the rest of his life protecting his daughter from jerks like him used to he is a perfect ending for him.

Barney truly did love his friends. The guy went above and beyond for them. He flew to CA to talk Lilly into coming home when her and Marshall were broken up. He even tried to keep Marshall from dating again (even though he pretended to help them). He got his by a bus trying to get to Ted when Ted was in the hospital. He was going to marry Robin to keep her here and then ended up taking it upon himself to help her find a job to stay in the states. Barney in my book was very underappreciated as a character.
His friends love him. You can't tolerate someone that long if you don't. If anything, them visibly showing their disgust of Barney's antics with the ladies but still always hanging out with him is like a testament of their unconditional love for the Barnacle.
