I just got those. XM4 sounded better. I could never wear xm4 for longer than let’s say 30 min b/c they would hurt my ears. The new ones are more comfortable but the sound quality went down. They sound very thin. I cross compared them with AirPods Pro and beats studio buds +. For iPhone - AirPods work best in my opinion.
Wow. They really need to add custom options for the touch sensor buttons like they do with the xm4000. I want full volume controlls on my left ear that I can scale with only 1 or 2 taps. Pressing both side of my ear 4 times to try and get the volume just right is a ridiculous oversight. Its so bad I though it just needed and update but there is still no way for volume customization like the previous model.
I first have to say that I have very little experience in audio and am only speaking as a novice listener. When I listen to music or a podcast with noise cancelling on, I hear no outside noise (even in the gym unless there is a loud yell or something right next to me). If I just have them in my ears playing nothing, then yes, noise seeps in for sure but drastic difference than when noise cancelling is off. @@av365
@@ceizhore4498 idk.. But the anc on ur until seems too good. For me, the sound intensity is reduced but i could still hear noise. Suppose the TV is playing and sit nearby, i would still be able to hear the voices clearly even though the volume seems much reduced. Now u make me wonder if i should really return

First time with Sony buds. My LDAC was turn on in Android developer mode but did not know I had to turn on LDAC in Bluetooth setting. Also, I did not know how to activate Noise Cancellation. This tutorial was very helpful. Thanks.

I want to know why the noise cancellation is so bad? I shouldnt hear the outside noise, wind noise, home sport blender noise ,vacuum cleaner noise. Had Bose Quiet Comfort Earbuds, no sound pr 23:13 oblem, warranty got off and Earbuds were in warranty fix about month, so they send the money. Thanks
What would you suggest trying if my XM5 gets cut out like each 1-2 minutes for a fraction of a second? It happens when im walking and my phone is in my pocket (lets say left pocket), so the right ear would cut out. I tried switching phones and it didnt help, i am using already AAC codec. Really annoying thing when listening to music and given that these are really expensive earbuds, previously i owned XM3 and it worked just fine (the mic sucked though), it never cut off like this

Is there any way to change the touch sensor settings for playback. For example, if I want to tap twice (instead of 4 times) on the right sensor to increase volume, can I change that and have 3 taps on the right sensor to skip to next song? Thanks!
Bass is heavier in MTW3. I have both and the sony sounds much more true to life and clean. You can really boost bass in MTW3 to absurd levels. Overall I like the xm5 better
This was a fantastic video Aaron! The speak to chat is problematic during calls though, because it not only stops noise cancellation but also pauses any audio, including the other person speaking :( Is that how it is expected to behave?
This video was a life safer! Easy to follow, very didactic. I'm just feeling hopeless about the constant beeping sound it makes... 😔 I can't figure out why it happens. Also, when I switch from one call to another, the earbuds lose connectivity, and I have to connect again. Is anyone having the same issue? Can anyone help? 🥲
In notifications and voice prompts can you turn off the touch control tones ? everytime you tap on the earbuds touch controls you hear a noise and I’m sure you could switch it off on the xm4s
Every time I want to use only one earbud, the noise cancelling turns off by itself. It is annoying because sometimes I pick the side which isn't set up with the noise cancellation control, so I have to pick the other side and turn it off actively. can somebody help me with this issue??
Just wondering if you can add a a different app to your tap system instead of just Spotify. I listen to a lot podcasts and would to sync this to the earbuds
I've been wondering for a long time: Why did Sony abandon the rough but very pleasant surface of its XM4 for a shiny low-end plastic for its XM5!!? And it may be bogus, but the primary function of these headphones is to better cancel out external noise... So maybe a highly reflective surface reflects reflects high-frequency sounds more than a rough one? I presuppose that by absorbing the high frequencies in the body (no reflection), the latter had more work to do in processing them? What do you think?

Bought the XM5 today but will return them if possible. The ANC is bad from my testing. It cant remove the noise from my kitchen fan, vacuum cleaner or my wifes voice. She has a pair of AirPods Pro 2, with those the fan and vacuum cleaner is barely audible. And her voice very low. Have tried all tips (the test in the Sony app thought booth medium and large tips was ok) and turned of the auto stuff. Really dissapointed.
Can you test some foam eartips replacements for this Sony? Are there some reputable ones? I dont want to buy some random tips from Amazon and cross fingers they will be a good choice for such an expensive earbuds. Maybe you could ask Sony why they dont sell bulk replacement packs at the reasonable price? Maybe you will be treated seriously.

In terms of earbuds apple usually releases AirPods on 3 year cycles. So we probably won’t get new Pros til 2025, though they will might be upgrading the charging cases to usbc on new models near end of year for the new iPhones
Are the only customization of the touch controls left or right ear? I really like to have 1 tap on the left mapped to skip track and 1 tap on the right play pause. It's so annoying when you can't make the headphones do what you want. My soundcore liberty 3 pro battery is in rough shape and I need something new.

I recently bought a pair and i was really hoping to use the spatial audio, but i cant seem to find any options for such. P.S my phone is a galaxy note 10 lite and a friend's galaxy buds spatial audio worked completely fine.
Hey Aaron, thank you for the hard work! Hopefully I'll be able to trade in my XM4s with the XM5 soon. But btw, did you notice that with the latest update, the XM4s can't independently connect? I used to be able to just either the left or the right earbud independently but now, only the right one! Please help with this if you can, the feature was super useful and it helped me mentally as I could use one after the other knowing I'm not draining only the right earbud's battery.
Anyone have issues with the microphone on these? Mine were great for about 3 months and now the microphone on the left earbud is very muffled and quiet and sometimes doesn't pick up any sound at all. Have factory reset and initialized many times and it's the same regardless of what device I connect it to.
I'm a little shocked you can't reassign individual Tap selections. I'm especially shocked that this is the case for the Ambient Sound control choice, where 2 of the options are not assigned. Truly a waste. If there is a way to do this, please record a video! (you can just point me to it. :))
How do you reply to message read out by google assistant, I hear countdown beeps after message has been read, which I presume is my cue to reply , but I dont know how. Help, love your videos by the way.
First time using them today. Found 4 fails with them. I found that it took a bit to figure out I hadn't inserted the earbuds correctly as there are no instructions on how to fit in your ear correctly. I found that when I eat, they dislodge and fall out of my ear. Also, a few times getting them out of the carry case, they slipped straight out of my fingers and onto the floor because the surface of the earbud is so glossy. So make sure you've got grippy fingers first before getting them out. And finally, the ANC is a mild ok. All these UA-cam people carrying on saying 'how amazing the ANC is', and I can still hear a person eating food in a quite room with ANC on. Other than that, the sound is pretty good. If you're not the kind of person that cares about a lot of different settings other than sound then wait for these to get a bit cheaper before buying.
Notice how quickly you blasted though the touch controls? Yeah, cause they are garbage. The Xm4 settings were better. Wish i could force the app to use the XM4 touch settings.

Very good review! I have the samsung pro ear buds, airpods pro 2nd gen (also have the s23 ultra and iphone 13 pro max ) and i feel that the price is not worth the upgrade. The sound on my samsung and apple are same as the $300 sony. Also the sound level reached a maximum that i feel should be more. And by the way, the fit on the ears are excellent. Thanks
earbuds are great but what I really hate is the volume control using touch controls...I have also Bose 700 btw where is used by sliding up/down. On sony on the other you can only tap or hold, which makes sense due to the size. What I dont understand is the idea of tapping 4times! to be able to adjust the volume. This is utterly nonsense. And you cant even change it in the app so you can atach volume controls to other tap-option (e.g. hold/2x tap/etc). So I have to have empty 2x tap because I dont really need spotify or whatever to control through the touch...pure lag of thinking from sony
The earbuds are awesome I would say the only downside is the glossy piano-like material. It's little harder to get them out of the case. They are more slippery. YOU ALMOST DID IT SONY. 9.9/10. I haven't used them in the gym while sweating. I hope they don't fall.
Anybody know what that harp sound is (like a harp twang?)..constantly occurs every few seconds - driving me mad... almost sounds like a disconnection. Personally, I hate this Sony device, and it's useless instructions.
What he should be saying is " sorry for the WF-1000XM4 battery disaster.' and that issue has been corrected with the xm5s. But no, let's pretend that never happen. They should've recalled all of the xm4s. Just stupid. Just plain irresponsible. Make customers tear their hair out thinking they did something wrong. Nothing is absolutely perfect, so OWN UP TO IT. All the bells and whistles don't mean a damn thing IF the batteries are junk.
If it only had good call quality, I would have kept them, I talk to my mom 1 hour a day almost every day, I have no problem with the Buds2 Pro, L3P amd the Tozo OpenReal, with the WF-1000XM5 my mom and my wife said I my voice sounded scrapy, muffled and cutting off in a QUIET enviroment, while driving it got worse, I think I will buy the Linkbuds S again to get that Sony clean sound, not saying Sony sound is the best, but on earbuds sound is pleasant and clean.
Yeah my main problem with these is also the calls. Nobody can understand what I'm saying. If you don't install Sony app the can hear me a lot better, but then you loose some customizations that you are paying 300€ for.
Great video, and a huge help to me. I thought that the app would allow me to completely customise what the taps on each earbud do, rather than just choosing between playback on one side and noise cancelling on the other. Have I missed something?
I tested the WF 1000XM5 against my Samsung Buds2 Pro and found that the information on the internet is a hoax and is biased. I returned them the same day because the ANC quality was inferior to the Buds2 Pro, and the bass was not as rich. Also they do not recess in the ear as Samsung Buds2 Pro does nicely. All those comparison graphs, screams of frequency and intensity are meaningless UNLESS there is statistical proof indicating the significant variations with a 95% confidence interval does really exist.

My take is that it was more an aesthetic decision. The plastic and lacquering seems very high quality but it came at the expense of practicality.

And finally, the ANC is a mild ok. All these UA-cam people carrying on saying 'how amazing the ANC is', and I can still hear a person eating food in a quite room with ANC on.
Other than that, the sound is pretty good.
If you're not the kind of person that cares about a lot of different settings other than sound then wait for these to get a bit cheaper before buying.

My XM5’s are working great except the included Large tips are too small so have to use 3rd party tips.
Yeah same problem. Tried same custom tips from my old xm4, but they're too big for the xm5's case! Have to figure something out here...

Notice how quickly you blasted though the touch controls? Yeah, cause they are garbage. The Xm4 settings were better. Wish i could force the app to use the XM4 touch settings.

If you're not really satisfied with your current earbuds and you're on android you can't get anything better than wf-1000xm5

Only when you're playing audio will you see the SPL.

Very good review! I have the samsung pro ear buds, airpods pro 2nd gen (also have the s23 ultra and iphone 13 pro max ) and i feel that the price is not worth the upgrade. The sound on my samsung and apple are same as the $300 sony. Also the sound level reached a maximum that i feel should be more. And by the way, the fit on the ears are excellent. Thanks
earbuds are great but what I really hate is the volume control using touch controls...I have also Bose 700 btw where is used by sliding up/down. On sony on the other you can only tap or hold, which makes sense due to the size. What I dont understand is the idea of tapping 4times! to be able to adjust the volume. This is utterly nonsense. And you cant even change it in the app so you can atach volume controls to other tap-option (e.g. hold/2x tap/etc). So I have to have empty 2x tap because I dont really need spotify or whatever to control through the touch...pure lag of thinking from sony
YES TURN AUTOMATIC UPDATE OFF. I will not let sony destroy my xm5 as they did with the xm4 battery drain...

The earbuds are awesome I would say the only downside is the glossy piano-like material. It's little harder to get them out of the case. They are more slippery. YOU ALMOST DID IT SONY. 9.9/10. I haven't used them in the gym while sweating. I hope they don't fall.

Anybody know what that harp sound is (like a harp twang?)..constantly occurs every few seconds - driving me mad... almost sounds like a disconnection. Personally, I hate this Sony device, and it's useless instructions.

What he should be saying is " sorry for the WF-1000XM4 battery disaster.' and that issue has been corrected with the xm5s. But no, let's pretend that never happen. They should've recalled all of the xm4s. Just stupid. Just plain irresponsible. Make customers tear their hair out thinking they did something wrong. Nothing is absolutely perfect, so OWN UP TO IT. All the bells and whistles don't mean a damn thing IF the batteries are junk.

If it only had good call quality, I would have kept them, I talk to my mom 1 hour a day almost every day, I have no problem with the Buds2 Pro, L3P amd the Tozo OpenReal, with the WF-1000XM5 my mom and my wife said I my voice sounded scrapy, muffled and cutting off in a QUIET enviroment, while driving it got worse, I think I will buy the Linkbuds S again to get that Sony clean sound, not saying Sony sound is the best, but on earbuds sound is pleasant and clean.
It'll get better in few firmware updates so just refund them and wait until they fix it
I think the Aiprods have the best call quality, not sure why. I always come off clearly om them.
Yeah my main problem with these is also the calls. Nobody can understand what I'm saying. If you don't install Sony app the can hear me a lot better, but then you loose some customizations that you are paying 300€ for.
The volume control 4 taps is rubbish
Great video, and a huge help to me. I thought that the app would allow me to completely customise what the taps on each earbud do, rather than just choosing between playback on one side and noise cancelling on the other. Have I missed something?
I tested the WF 1000XM5 against my Samsung Buds2 Pro and found that the information on the internet is a hoax and is biased. I returned them the same day because the ANC quality was inferior to the Buds2 Pro, and the bass was not as rich. Also they do not recess in the ear as Samsung Buds2 Pro does nicely. All those comparison graphs, screams of frequency and intensity are meaningless UNLESS there is statistical proof indicating the significant variations with a 95% confidence interval does really exist.
How would you compare these to the Technics Az80?
