She doesn’t get enough props when people talk about girls who walked so others could run. She’s one of those amazing women who broke down so many barriers for women. Truly someone who should be in history books. 👊🏼💜
Wow, Muska pushed for Steamer. He moved skateboarding forward by decades by giving Steamer a chance. She was always better than a lot of the guy skaters. She deserves all the success she got but is still so underrated.
EMPTYHERO im a dude and that game was life back in the day....i always played with her. finished career mode over and over always found myself playing as steamer
Damn, her saying she had no idea what she was even capable of until during the filming of her first part just really hit me for some reason. I feel like that attitude is what subconsciously keeps a lot of girl skaters from pushing to be better than they are. Thankfully people like Elissa exist, as well as new generation skaters like Lizzie Armanto.
Krishtie Mofazzal hey, thank you! I'm actually a noob female skater, so this whole episode was just super inspiring and incredibly relatable. It made me think a lot about how sometimes we can be surrounded by awesome and supportive people, and yet still be 'held back' by our own attitude, and by negative feelings that are so deeply ingrained that we don't even understand them or where they come from. Something I need to work on with my own skating & in general!
A Clark that's so awesome, I'm the same!! I feel like female skaters are sometimes lumped together too often or are always called a "female" skater rather than just a skater, also they're always compared to male skaters and people always say "she's just as good as the boys", but never that she's better. Idk I have so many things to say, even though there's more diversity now the attitudes towards female skaters needs to change, they need to be normalised
Krishtie Mofazzal Right on! *highfive* lol yeah I definitely do agree, rather than "damn she's a good skater" it's always "damn she's as good as the guys." Truthfully I do think sometimes it comes from within us as female skaters, at least I know I'm guilty of it. Hell, the first thing I do when I go to a park is scan quickly to see if there are any girls there, just to see if I'm not the only one, and it shouldn't be like that, I shouldn't ever care who's around when I'm skating, yet subconsciously I do. Skating is so beautiful because it's about overcoming your ego and accepting failure again and again until you get it, not caring what others think...I think maybe that's not something that girls are taught how to do, or that it's okay to do that even. IDK, I'm rambling but that's the sort of feeling I got from hearing Elyssa talk - like, despite having awesome and supportive parents, she was still doing something that was SO completely unheard of for a girl that it was like, "Can you do it? Well sure, I don't see why not!" rather than "Fuck yeah you can do it, go blow them away!" I feel like that attitude of "I think I can" still hasn't shifted fully to "I KNOW I can" for female skating, and I'm hoping that will be the pivotal moment when the sport is pushed to another level. Lizzie Armanto (who competes with dudes instead of in female comps) is another huge inspiration to me for that reason. If we want to be more than 'just as good as', then we have to change our whole perceptions of what we're capable of, too...Everyone elses' perceptions will follow. /end laregly self-directed motivational rant
Elissa was honestly one of the most humble people I knew growin up. She used to baby sit me in San Diego when I was 4 cause we all lived in the same house pretty much an she gave me my first board lol Shits crazy to remember haha Her an her friends used to set up ramps on the big ass hill outside of our house an they'd just fuckin mob down that shit an hit the ramps. Miss those days damn
I honestly don't think I could have convinced my sister to skate with me if not for her. Thank you! A life of childhood memories thanks to her influence on the sport.
Oh man, it's just so weird to see Jamie Thomas, Chad Muska, Templeton and Steamer in their late thirties-early forties. I'm in my early twenties, but this makes me feel a little old... ps. you guys should stop bashing her...she is an amazing, down to earth person who accomplished a lot in the past decades.
gyuziburcsany exactly how I feel. I’ll be 29 in a few days and I just can’t believe how old I feel. A couple years ago all these guys were ripping at my age. I still have a the OG fingerboard decks of all the sickest graphics. Even those shorty boards they came out with.
gyuziburcsany I feel you bro same here I'm playing Tony hawk 2 on N64 & decided to look her up pretty dope man although it does makee feel old & I'm in my mid 20s
I think that its important to remember how much she innovated in the earlier days of street skating regardless of gender. In Welcome to Hell she was one of the best parts going up against some of the best dudes in skateboarding in the 90s. I think she deserves far more credit than just "great girl skater".
Use to watch Welcome to Hell religiously, before skating! That spot where she jumps the gap onto that triangle is in Miami, I look at everyday at work, pretty cool.
Streamer ruled my skate world, when I was 13. There where very few girls in Seattle that actually skated. We always referred to girl skaters as Betties. No disrespect intended its just what we all called skater chicks. Any way Elissa Steamer you are so rad.
23 years of life and I’m moving from my hometown Fort Myers, Florida to North Carolina with the family I have made. Gonna miss this place more than I thought. Elissa thank you for first inspiring me when I was just a little tiny kid. You’re fuckin gnar.
When I was a kid she was my biggest role model. We have the same first name and I wanted to be and still want to be an epic girl skater because of her :3. I have a classic Toy Machine board like hers in THPS. She really broke the mould. Had she not, someone else would have but the fact remains that she really brought about a change. Even so, a lot of skating videos are aimed at guys - "go out and impress that girl". I'm not going to do it to impress anyone. Just be myself. Dress/skate how I want.
I met Hawk when I was 5. Outside of a shopping center in The Bay, and that had me hooked on skating. But, this generation was the generation that got me completely sold
Lolol I love her!! I live in englewood Florida for a while and we used to do the same thing, wait for the new skatepark to close and then go after and skate til dark! 😂😂😂
I moved to Fort Myers literally a month after she moved to Cali..I ended up at a party with all her friends..she is a big deal in Fort Myers..They are very proud of her there, as they should be..RESPECT.
Her last bail on Welcome to Hell was brutal. Always awesome to see a woman good enough to get credit for her talent and not the fact that she's a woman in a mans sport.
I love epicly Later'd. it shows all the 'old' skaters that all those new school generation doesn't know anything about. I love to see all those old names, they've done a lot for skateboarding they made it big. thanks you all
I thought Cars Beth Burnside was the first female pro. Would all of you talking shit about her looks be saying the same shit if she waS a guy, I doubt it. it's fucked up sexist attitudes towards female skaters that probably keeps a lot of girls from even starting skateboarding. btw She still kills it.
is it relating to their actual experience in that environment that requires one to become inspired? she inspires people to break boundaries in whatever they do. not just skateboarding. becoming strong and following your heart is a big part of being successful I bet 50 and Trump would give props to Steamer if they knew about her and her feats
I remember watching Welcome To Hell with all my skater friends and for a long time if anyone was afraid to try something or struggling to learn a trick someone would remind him that "Elissa Steamer can do that, what is wrong with you?". Mad respect.
Big up Elissa! Massive influence on me starting skating from a young age in the 90s, fond memories of watching her pro vid on Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 (I think? Maybe Pro Skater 1). It's crazy to think there was hardly any female skaters in the 90s - guess it's just the way society is before people go against it.
Elissa should get WAY more credit!! I remember that was during my time and she was the only chick that skated and even more a girl who skated because she loved skating and didn’t start because of some guy! True badass🤘

I don't even skate, this is just interesting. People are so cool.
Aida You should consider skating, never too late to start :)

She's definitely paid the price physically for being ahead of the pack. Dedication. You don't have to like skating to admire that.
Late ass reply so ya probably won't see this but anyway tho damn right and well said, totally agree with ya dude
I think she paid mentally too..
Love Elissa! As a girl skater, I was so stoked to have her in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games. I always played as her.

I think one of the things that sets Steamer apart from other female pros, is that her style is as aggressive as, if not more, than a lot of even male pros. You watch someone like Bufoni and she looks like she's afraid to commit constantly, and even though she did commit to a trick, her style just looks like she's terrified of falling over.
Steamer just goes hard as fuck and never looks even remotely concerned with the thought of bailing. The only female skater out right now that I think is as fun to watch as Steamer, is probably Lacey Baker. Baker doesn't really have a comparable style tho, she's tech as fuck and doesn't seem to really care about hitting big gaps or going very fast or anything. I just don't think there are really many pro women out there right now that are very fun to watch, but I REALLY hope that changes soon.
